Build<strong>in</strong>g of the courthouse, located at the corner<br />
of Court and Frankl<strong>in</strong> streets, was begun <strong>in</strong> the fall of<br />
1845. It was enlarged by the addition of two w<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
<strong>in</strong> 1888 and was remodeled <strong>in</strong> the latter<br />

Chief Logan Marker<br />
It was here under a large elm<br />
tree that <strong>in</strong> 1774, Tah-gah-jute,<br />
the M<strong>in</strong>go chief called Logan<br />
was said to have delivered<br />
his powerful speech on Indianwhite<br />
relations, which was<br />
translated and delivered to<br />
Virg<strong>in</strong>ia Governor Lord Dunmore<br />
at Camp Charlotte.<br />
The speech is <strong>in</strong>scribed on this<br />
monument at the park, worded<br />
as it was related to President<br />
Thomas Jefferson. Once considered to be one of the largest elms<br />
<strong>in</strong> the United States, the 65 foot tall elm died <strong>in</strong> 1964 after be<strong>in</strong>g<br />
stricken with blight and damaged by storms.<br />
