Don’t miss this star-spangled presentation!<br />

David Wiedenkeller will portray Francis Scott Key—American lawyer,<br />

author and amateur poet— to mark the 199th anniversary year of<br />

Key’s writing of “The Star Spangled Banner.”<br />

Wiedenkeller has a master’s degree in history and is certified to work<br />

in museums as a curator. He wears period attire and takes on the<br />

persona of his characters to present his living history demonstrations.<br />

He has a repertoire of nearly 20 characters including President George<br />

Washington, General George S. Patton and a Civil War naval officer.<br />

Enjoy this presentation as Wiedenkeller shares the life story of Key,<br />

along with little known facts and relics of the era.<br />

The Treasures of Kenwood House, London<br />

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to view outstanding paintings that have never<br />

before traveled outside the United Kingdom. This special exhibit features<br />

forty-eight masterpieces, mostly drawn from the collection of Edward Cecil<br />

Guinness, 1st Earl of Iveagh and heir to the world’s most successful brewery. The<br />

Iveagh Bequest, as the collection has been called since the earl donated it to the<br />

State, has been housed at Kenwood House, a villa in London. With Kenwood<br />

under renovation, this collection is traveling outside of the United Kingdom for<br />

the first time, and the Milwaukee Art Museum is one of only four venues in the<br />

U.S. to present the exhibit. The highly acclaimed works represent the greatest<br />

artists of the Belle Époque—Europe’s equivalent to America’s Gilded Age.<br />

To live a long and healthy life, it is important to stay on<br />

top of necessary screenings and exams. Regular physical<br />

exams provide a snapshot of your health, and test results<br />

may encourage you to make lifestyle changes that will<br />

help keep you healthy.<br />

Screening tests can often detect problems early,<br />

preventing major consequences down the road. For<br />

example, many people at risk for stroke and heart disease<br />

experience no symptoms. Screening tests may find these<br />

and other diseases or conditions early, when they are<br />

easier to treat.<br />

Which tests you need will depend on your age, your<br />

gender, your family history and whether you have risk<br />

factors for certain diseases. Your doctor may also<br />

recommend additional tests based on your lifestyle.<br />

Here are the most common tests recommended for<br />

middle-aged to older adults.<br />

• Blood pressure<br />

• Cholesterol<br />

• Colorectal cancer<br />

• Diabetes<br />

Additionally, women should have a pap test to screen<br />

for cervical cancer, a mammogram to detect breast<br />

cancer, and a bone mineral density test to screen for<br />

osteoporosis. Men 65 or older who have ever smoked<br />

should be screened for an abdominal aortic aneurysm.<br />

THE ROAD TO FREEDOM<br />

The Underground Railroad in Waukesha County<br />

The Waukesha County Museum presents this program on the<br />

Underground Railroad, a means by which slaves in the south<br />

could escape to the north and to freedom. Learn about<br />

Caroline Quarles and Joshua Glover, runaway slaves who<br />

travelled through Waukesha County via the Underground<br />

Railroad. Glean an understanding of the risks both<br />

abolitionists and slaves were taking as conductors and<br />

passengers on the Underground Railroad. This program is<br />

approximately an hour long and provides an engaging,<br />

lasting experience. OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!<br />

Day Trip to Grohmann Museum<br />

Dedicated to the evolution of human work<br />

The Grohmann Museum at Milwaukee School of Engineering houses<br />

the world’s most comprehensive art collection dedicated to the evolution<br />

of human work.<br />

With more than 900 paintings and sculptures that depict various forms<br />

of work, The Eckhart G. Grohmann Collection Man at Work spans<br />

more than 400 years of history (17-20th centuries). See the evolution of<br />

organized work, from manpower and horsepower to water, steam and<br />

electrical power.<br />

The museum itself is a work of art, with architectural elements derived from the collection. Visit three floors<br />

of galleries where the core collection is displayed, as well as special themed exhibitions. The museum also<br />

features a spectacular rooftop sculpture garden and amenities such as a vending café and store. The<br />

Grohmann Museum opened in October 2007.<br />
