Message from the Australian Sports Commission
The countdown to an Olympic
and Paralympic Games is an
exciting time for Australians.
As London 2012 looms on our
horizon there is much work
to be done to fine tune our
preparations.
The Australian Government and the
Australian Sports Commission (ASC)
continue to work closely with Olympic
and Paralympic sports, along with the
Australian Olympic and Paralympic
Committees to ensure our athletes get
the best possible support.
Through the Green and Gold project,
$3.85 million in extra funding has been
provided for our top Olympic athletes
and teams to boost their training and
preparations for London 2012.
A true sign that Australian sport is
united in working together is the
endorsement from the Commonwealth,
State and Territory Governments of the
National Sport and Active Recreation
Policy Framework.
What this means is that for the first
time all governments have agreed on
priorities for sport.
Underpinning the Framework is
the new National Institutes System
Intergovernmental Agreement which
unites our National Institutes of Sport
and national sporting organisations to
work hand-in-hand to achieve common
national high performance objectives to
maximise resourcing and expertise in
support of the development of world class
athletes to achieve international success.
This Framework is supported by
significant additional investment in sport
by the Australian Government. The 2011-
12 Budget will provide $300 million to
support the full spectrum of sport from
grass roots through to elite competition.
Support by the Australian Government
will enable a more collaborative long
term focus to drive reform within
Australian sport and importantly make
the connection between Australian’s
standing on the podium and young
Australians participating in sport.
This is an exciting and challenging time
for Australian sport. The Australian
Sports Commission looks forward to
working with all sporting organisations,
the state and territory institutes and
academies of sport and state and
territory departments of sport and
recreation, to promote access to,
and participation in, sport across the
community and support Australia’s
continued sporting success.
The Hon. Warwick Smith AM
Chairman
Board of the Australian Sports Commission
6 | Australian Water Polo 2010/11 Annual Report

President’s Report
My congratulations go to all
members of our respective
National Teams, in particular
to our Senior Women’s Team
winning silver in the World Cup
in Christchurch and also a bronze
medal in the World League Finals
in Shanghai, China.
It is worthwhile noting this is their
6th medal since the inception of this
competition in 2004.
For Australian Water Polo to continue to
support athletes to successfully achieve
these levels of performance, podium
finishes, we must continue to evolve and
therefore plan for organisational change.
The Board underwent a governance
review and skills audit and my thanks go
to Leanne Barnes for driving this initiative.
This Review identified a need to appoint
a Board member with media skills and
preferably achieve a more equitable
gender balance. Olympic Bronze medalist
Amy Hetzel who has extensive media
experience was appointed and we
are grateful for her acceptance of the
appointment. This period also saw the
appointment of Kay Copeland who was
elected in November 2010 for the vacant
position created by the retirement of
Leanne Barnes. Kay has brought to the
Board extensive governance and previous
board experience.
These changes have enabled the
Australian Water Polo Board to make
strategic decisions as to the direction of
the sport and provide valuable support
to the CEO.
Operationally, with the Head Office
locating to Sydney, we are indebted to
the ongoing support and infrastructure
provided to us by NSWIS and their CEO,
Charles Turner and his staff.
With London Olympics just around the
corner, the feedback we are receiving
from our senior coaches is positive with
the belief that the teams are better
prepared at this point in time to that of
our previous Olympic cycle. We are very
thankful for the ongoing support of the
Australian Olympic Committee and its
President John Coates.
Congratulations to the Fremantle
Mariners for taking out the Men’s
National League Final and to the
Brisbane Barracudas for their victory in
the Women’s Final. This season also saw
the advent of the All Stars Game which
was the initiative of and funded by Jeff
Barrow which coincided with the 18’s
Championship held in Brisbane. The
Game was played to an extremely high
standard and to a packed house. We are
very appreciative of Jeff’s support.
The National Junior competitions that
we conducted were again well attended
and thank you to our Member States and
their volunteers, our Operations Manager,
Peter Hobday and lastly but not least,
to all the parents who accompany and
support our junior athletes.
The Hall of Fame Dinner was again very
successful with Les Nunn, Ian Mills, Chris
Wybrow, Leanne Barnes and myself
being inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Acknowledgements
We gratefully acknowledge the
Australian Government through the
Australian Sports Commission for
the funding under the Direct Athlete
Support program to our male and
female athletes. I would also like
to thank the staff of the Australian
Institute of Sport, the State Institutes
and Academies for the ongoing
successful relationship that we share.
Finally, I thank the AWPI Board, CEO
Chris Harrison, John Whitehouse and
the staff for their tireless efforts in
making AWPI the organisation that it is
and for the support and pathways they
provide to our athletes as they prepare
for competition.
Peter Kerr
President
Australian Water Polo 2010/11 Annual Report | 7

Chief Executive Officer’s Report
After a full 12 months in the
position of CEO it is important
that I acknowledge our
stakeholders and partners,
partnerships need to be a
symbiotic relationship where
both parties achieve their
objectives.
Without doubt, without the invaluable
financial and intellectual support of
the Australian Sports Commission
(ASC) our sport would not enjoy the
international success that it achieves.
Important funding has been received
from the ASC to maintain our programs
in our core business of high performance
and additional funding received to
aid and assist in the development of
participation programs.
We enjoy a close and productive
relationship with our State Institutes
of Sport and the State Academies that
provide our athletes with their daily
training.
In a recent high performance review it
was not a surprise to see that athletes
spend more time with their Institute
coaches than either with their Club
coaches or National coach.
Last year I spoke of the importance of
providing to our athletes an enduring
pathway, given that our Mission
Statement is that “We will be recognised
and accepted as a successful major
sporting organisation both in Australia
and internationally, through its
astute and planned management, the
performance of international teams and
the delivery of water polo at all levels.”
I have set about with some
rationalisation, which has included
moving the finances to Sydney where
we can utilise the existing first-rate
infrastructure provided by the New
South WaIes Institute of Sport.
My sincere thanks go to Peter Jackson for
his invaluable assistance and guidance
throughout this transition.
The external review of our infrastructure
was completed and delivered to the
board. The changes were approved and
either have already been made or are in
the process of implementation.
The National Water Polo League also
had a comprehensive separate external
review and our thanks go to Jackie
Fairweather senior sports consultant
from the ASC who not only facilitated
this, but travelled over Australia to obtain
feedback from all interested parties.
We look forward to the release of the
finalised document and the National
League being integral in our domestic
high performance plans.
I would like to thank the President,
Mr. Peter Kerr and the Board of
Australian Water Polo for their ongoing
support, hard work and enthusiasm.
High Performance Report
The organisation and
management of the High
Performance Program was again
overseen by a High Performance
Committee comprising
representatives from the ASC,
AIS, AWPI and the respective
national coaches.
The HPC met quarterly and provided
excellent support to the national
coaches in assisting them to achieve in
most part all Key Performance Indicators
(KPI’s) across both domestic and
international activities.
A High Performance Program Planning
Workshop co-ordinated and facilitated
by Jackie Fairweather Senior Sports
Consultant Organisation Development
Australian Sports Commission was
held in November 2010 which not
only involved members of the High
Performance Committee but athletes
and other contributors; the Planning
Workshop was the genesis for the
development of a High Performance
Plan 2011 - 2016 which has
subsequently been refined with the very
kind assistance of Iain Brambell Senior
Sport Partnership Manager Sports
Planning and Performance Australian
Sports Commission.
I have detailed below elements from this
document, namely:
Summary
The Australian Water Polo Incorporated
(AWPI) High Performance Plan is
designed to build depth in the National
Team Program, strengthen the high
performance delivery network and,
ultimately, result in sustainable podium
performances in London 2012, Rio de
Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games and beyond.
High Performance Vision
To be the most successful International
Water Polo program - from National
Youth to Senior Teams to facilitate and
nurture the sport of water polo for the
enjoyment of all levels of participation.
System Goals
1. Producing Australian Champions.
2. AWPI, its Member Associations and
National Network (NIN) partners share
common purposes and objectives,
strategic and operational plans, policies
and procedures based on a national
behaviour federal structure.
3. The National League is strengthened
as an important stepping stone to
National teams.
4. The number of active referees to increase
by 50% from 90 currently in 2011.
5. The number of registered participants
Photo Credit: Anthony Pearse, Pearse Photography
will increase 25% from the current
11,200 participants.
6. AWPI provides the best opportunity
for competition, training and touring
structure including individual athletes
accessing overseas playing and
training opportunities.
7. Continued review and refinement of the
national athlete and coach pathway.
8. AWPI effectively supports the high
performance program.
9. Effective partnerships that promote the
development of athletes across Australia.
10. Identification of new research,
training techniques, information and
equipment to optimise performance.
Milestone Performance Goals
> 2012 Australian Team World and
Olympic Ranking
• Senior Women - Podium Finish
• Senior Men - Top 4 Placing
• Junior Women - Podium Finish
• Junior Men - Top 4 Placing
• Youth Girls - Top 8
• Youth Boys - Top 8
> 2016 Australian Team World and
Olympic Ranking
• Senior Women - Gold Medal
• Senior Men - Podium Finish
• Junior Women - Podium Finish
• Junior Men - Podium Finish
• Youth Girls - Top 6
• Youth Boys - Top 6
The High Performance Plan is fully
documented and AWPI has set High
Performance Aims Timelines for the
achievement of these targets.
The current High Performance Program
for men is a decentralised National
Training Centre (NTC) based program
with centres in Brisbane, Sydney,
Melbourne and Perth supported by
the SIS/SAS network and an Elite
Development Centre (ETC) in Adelaide
again supported by the SIS/SAS network.
These programs deliver the daily
training environment for the athletes.
The athletes attending the centres are
generally national senior, junior and
youth squad members. A number of the
men’s national team continue to play in
professional leagues overseas.
Australian Water Polo 2010/11 Annual Report | 9

The Women’s High Performance
Program is again a decentralised NTC
and ETC based program utilising the
same centres as the men’s program.
However, in addition, the AIS women’s
camps-based program permits the
national squad to train together under
ideal circumstances.
Joint Management Committee (JMC)
agreements form the cornerstone of
the relationship between the national
organisation and the SIS/SAS network.
An important and essential requirement
for the establishment of any NTC
program is the commitment the
member association to support
the program with an underpinning
program and unfortunately the quality
of the underpinning programs vary
considerably which presents a unique
challenge for AWPI.
Water polo, for a relatively low-profile
sport, enjoys a very comprehensive and
extensive international program and
we are indebted to the many national
federations that host our teams on what
seemingly is an annual basis. In the
period under review, our teams made
10 international tours to attend world
league events, international tournaments
and training camp activities.
AWPI also hosted a very successful
Preliminary Round of the FINA Men’s
and Women’s World League in Sydney
Australia May 2011.
The international program was arranged
in most part by our representatives at
the LEN Calendar Congress held Reykjavik
Iceland in May 2011 and we are indeed
grateful of the work done by Tom Hoad
and Chris Harrison at this congress.
I have deliberately avoided making
reference to the performance of our
teams as others have addressed these
elsewhere in the report particularly the
respective coaches.
Acknowledgements
It is appropriate to acknowledge the
support of all funding and support
agencies that contribute to the High
Performance Program, namely the
ASC, AIS, SIS/SAS, AOC and sponsors, in
particular, Turbo Crotton SA, SOPAC and
NSWIS; to the national senior, junior,
youth and girls’ coaches, assistant
coaches, managers, support staff and
referees, AIS coaches, managers, support
staff and the NTC coaches - thank you
for your dedication and support given to
our athletes.
Operations Report
Insurance
Insurance cover available for its members,
clubs and associations includes:
• Sports Injury
• Public Liability
• Professional Indemnity
• Workers Compensation
• Directors and Officers Liability
• Travel Insurance
• Club Property
• Club Travel
AWPI continues to review its risk
management policies, unfortunately
with significant claims lodged in past
years which have exceeded our premium
paid, our current premiums continue to
be under some pressure.
National Championships
Four age groups of National
Championships were conducted with
the cooperation of State Associations
who continue to show a willingness to
host these championships on behalf
of AWPI. It is acknowledged that pool
space is becoming a critical factor in the
conduct of these events as pool operators
endeavour to recover lost revenue from
their regular users. As the costs of utilities
rise, so does the pool hire cost, hence
AWPI has attempted to cover these costs
through team entry fees.
The following hosts and teams are to be
Website
The website was rejuvenated and
relaunched in December 2010, with a
more interactive model used for display.
Regular e-newsletters are distributed
via email giving an up-to-date report
on what’s happening. Dave Lyall, AWPI
Media Manager, is taking a pro-active role
with clubs to encourage stories about
players for inclusion on the web site. I
would like to thank Russell McKinnon for
his contribution in supporting the web
site and NWPL media.
Database
The National database continues to be
an important tool in monitoring club
and team registrations. Victorian Water
Polo is leading the charge towards online
registrations and payment of fees online
with this option available to other State
Associations, clubs, teams and members.
I am pleased to report that all State
Associations are now firmly committed
to maintaining member information via
the National database.
National Development Report
Nationally over the past twelve
months all sports have been
undergoing specific changes to
their programs.
The development area is no exception
with an emphasis on building capacity.
This was one of the recommendations
from the Crawford Report that included
further engagement of our membership
base and to create and support new and
existing participation opportunities.
Along with all other national sporting
organisations Australian Water Polo
Inc. was invited by the Australian
Sports Commission to bid for additional
funding to create new participation
programs and to improve capacity across
the board.
As a result of a submission, Australian
Water Polo Incorporated received new
funding of $100,000 for a participation
demonstration project. This, it is
envisaged will enable AWPI and its
members the ability to assist in building
capacity. Further specific information
regarding the new program will be rolled
out in due course.
Some of the highlights for the year
included:
New Online Coach/Referee
Course Electronic Surveys
Through the use of SurveyMonkey two
new online course evaluation surveys
have been developed to provide coaches
and referees the opportunity to provide
feedback on aspects of our NCAS/NOAS
training programs.
Website Update
Several new changes have been made to
the development section of the website
including:
• A publicised list of nationally
accredited NCAS/NOAS training course
assessors in each state.
• Access to the new online e-learning
drugs in sport program from the
Australian Sports Anti-Doping
Authority (ASADA).
• New webpage covering mentoring the
coach and official - includes video clips.
• The provision of online registration for
the NCAS Senior Club Coach Course,
AWPI Flippa Ball resources and access
to the online coaching knowledgebase.
Flippa Ball
Additional resources have been created
and added to support our existing
manual, ‘wiki’ and DVD including:
• Operational templates for state
associations and their affiliated
members including: school visits,
weekly report, mileage use, come n try
budget, draft business model etc.
• New marketing resources to support
the brand included a poster, bumper
bar sticker and tattoo.
New National Participation
Framework 2011-2014
As previously mentioned I have been
working on a new program as a result
of the projected increase in funding
for participation. The new National
Participation Plan (NPP) will bring together
all states and all levels of the game for
the first time in a nationally coordinated
strategy. Importantly, the NPP offers a
coordinated blueprint for children from
all walks of life and all skill levels.
The NPP starts with the introduction of
a new participation program targeted at
the 5-8 years age group. To date 20 new
activity cards have been developed for
use by coaches. Another initiative of the
NPP sees schools aligned with clubs to
coordinate playing opportunities.
The program will also be inclusive covering:
> Migrant communities & Indigenous
communities
Form links with programs for migrants
and the indigenous community who
are disadvantaged to introduce them to
Water Polo.
> Deaf Community
Seek opportunities to introduce Water
Polo to members of the deaf community,
with a view to not only fielding teams
in the Deaf Olympics, but to look for
integration of deaf participants to our
own hearing-community.
> Project Connect
Utilise Project Connect Disability
program, which will identify strategies
and activities that will ensure that
people with disabilities can become
involved in water polo.
> Facilities
Without sufficient access to pool space
it would be difficult to increase our
participation base. Currently a major
majority of the aquatic centres in each
state are utilised and several are not.
National Media Report
AWPI engaged Sports
Communication Australia (SCA) to
provide media services for the sport.
After analysing the status of media
management within AWPI, SCA
established a media management plan
and guidelines for State Associations,
NWPL clubs and other clubs, identifying
new opportunities for publicity and
relationship building with the media.
This included creating a water polo
specific downloadable Media Kit to
be used as a ‘self help resource’ by the
water polo community.
SCA submitted an application on behalf
of AWPI for the Federal Government’s
Women in Sport Media Grant and was
successful in winning $30,000 to be
used to promote women in water polo
through the media.
This grant is being used in a number of
ways including producing and distributing
AWPI’s own TV news content from
various Aussie Stingers camps and games,
social media training for players and
administrators, a consultant to provide
social media content and promotion of the
Pan Pacific Championships.
SCA Managing Director Dave Lyall
also attended the 2011 FINA World
Championships in Shanghai and
provided media liaison for both
Australian teams, reported on all
Australian matches and educated
players on the media.
Other areas that SCA has focussed on in
the first six months of its contract with
AWPI include:
• The establishment of a social media
plan, guidelines and implementation
• The creation of a more robust
biographical database of elite players
by profiling members of the senior
national squads
• Producing ‘regional’ driven tailor made
media releases for all members selected
in Australian teams in all ages groups
• Increased content and updating of
the AWPI website and social media
platforms
• The creation of monthly blogs by CEO
Chris Harrison, National Women’s Head
Coach Greg McFadden and National
Men’s Head Coach John Fox
• Media Training of the Senior
National Teams
• Improving media education and
relationships with the sport of
water polo
SCA has and will continue to report on
all AWPI events and competitions as well
as the national teams
The outcomes of these areas of
concentration have resulted in greater
media coverage for the sport of water
polo and its players with mainstream
news coverage in print, radio, online
and television.
SCA has also put together a media plan
for implementation around the 2012
Pan Pacific Championships, begun a
London Olympic Games media campaign
including launching a 40 week “Get to
know a Stinger” or “Get to know a Shark”
profiling campaign of members of the
national senior squads and assisted with
the submission to the Western Australian
Government for the 2012 FINA World
Youth Championships in Perth.
SCA would like to acknowledge the
support of the CEO, Board and staff
of AWPI, the national coaching and
management staff and the players on
the senior national teams.
a penalty shootout in one of the most
exciting games ever seen in the NWPL’s
history. Unfortunately, the Victorian Tigers
could not make it back to back titles, going
down to a strong Fremantle Mariners side.
My thanks go to Doc Wulf who
again this year provided a range of
comprehensive statistics from every
aspect of the NWPL season.
Season Highlights
• Brisbane Barracudas won their third
women’s title after finishing third
following the home and away games.
• The Fremantle Mariners defeated the
Victorian Tigers by one goal in a tight
fought Gold Medal game making it five
trophies for the Fremantle Mariners.
• Sydney University Lions’ Alastair Visch
way in which they have approached
the development and appointments of
the referees for the 2011 season. We
now have a group of dedicated referees
who are proud to be refereeing in the
National League. 2012 will see further
developments with the appointments of
neutral delegates to games.
Sponsors and Supporters
The NWPL is fortunate to have the support
of many sponsors and the clubs also
have their own sponsors and we thank
the numerous League and club sponsors
whose assistance and support is greatly
appreciated by the NWPL and clubs.
These include the Australian Sports
Senior Men’s Report
The 2010/11 season began with
the World League/World Cup
tour to Europe.
A squad of 15 players was selected to
represent Australia.
FINA World League Super Finals,
Mitchell Baird, Ritchie Campbell, John
Cotterill, Joel Dennerley, Rhys Howden,
Cotterill, Joel Dennerley,
Rhys Howden, Sam McGregor,
Rob Maitland (C), Anthony Martin, Billy
Miller, Nick O’Halloran,
James Stanton, Joel Swift, Aaron Younger.
Head Coach: John Fox. Assistant Coach:
Paul Oberman. Manager: Gary Rydberg.
Osteopath: Andrew Gott.
Referee: Michael Hart.
Some of the more significant positive
aspects of the tour included:
• Defeat of world ranked number 2
(Spain) and number 3 (Croatia) in
world league.
• Top 4 finish in world league
The areas of significance that were most
disappointing included:
• 6th finish at world cup; not being able to
back up performance from world league
• Extra-man attack. Fell way below our
revised target of 50%
• Lack of focus in attack with a strong
CF presence
• Inability to convert clutch goals which
would normally be scored.
The anticipated availability and possible
return of some senior players in the
next 2 years will bolster our stocks, but
what is just as important is the valuable
experience gained by our ‘young’ team.
Notable performances came from:
• Aaron Younger who was on his 1st
senior European tour and performed
exceptionally well, especially at CB.
• Sam McGregor had a fantastic tour,
especially given that he was returning
from a year lay-off. He will continue to find
his niche on the international arena to
be a dominant player in the next 2 years.
• Rhys Howden again proved to be a
dangerous player on the left hand side of
the pool, and defensively is very sound.
• Billy Miller provided many
opportunities in attack through his
driving and counter attack prowess and
is beginning to establish himself as a
consistent international performer.
• Both goal keepers who had excellent
tours, with James Stanton having
his best tournament (World Cup) for
a number of years. Joel Dennerley
played a very strong support role both
in and out of the water for James and
the team. When Joel was called upon
to step in for James, he performed
consistently and competently gaining
the respect of the opposition and trust
of our defence.
I noted two comments which I feel sum
up our tour this year:
• On the Italian water polo website our
team has been described as the revelation
team of the world league tournament,
with a strong counter attack and some
exciting young prospects.
• The Serbian team commented that we
are doing the right thing in bringing
the youth through and they believe we
will continue to improve until London
whereas other teams may be already
peaking and don’t have the quality or
depth of juniors to step into senior
international water polo in such a
short time.
The opportunity for players to play
professionally overseas was again a
highlight of the mens program.
15 players from various levels of the men’s
program gained contracts with various
clubs in Europe and colleges in USA.
These included Aaron Younger (Szeged
Hungary), Anthony Martin (Sabadell
Spain), Rob Maitland (Barcelona Spain;
Kings Cup champions), Johnno Coterill
(Chios Greece), Aidan Roach (Zak Serbia),
Tyler Martin and Samuele Avalone
(Camogli Italy), Joszef Balasc (UTS
Hungary), Richie Hyden (Seville Spain),
Joel Dennerley, Jeremy Davies and Mace
Rapsey (USC USA; NCAA champions),
Perry Short (Berkeley USA), Matt Gronow
and Fraser Bunn (Santa Barbara USA).
These players provided weekly updates
and reports of matches played which
made for great reading on AWPI website.
Following the world league and world
cup review it was decided that we
needed to address one specific problem
that had been an issue for national
men’s teams since 2008. With the
unavailability of experienced and proven
international CF’s and the identified
weakness of our junior players in this
position a proposal to conduct CF
specific camps was tabled. In an effort
to improve our performances at CF and
to also ‘fast track’ potential international
players for this position we instigated
a series of 3 CF camps in the 3 major
NTC’s of Perth, Sydney and Brisbane.
This trial proved to be very successful
and the benefits of which were evident
in competition throughout the national
league and international season.
Many thanks to the specialist coaches
involved (see acknowledgments)
October 2010
The NSWIS/QAS trip to Japan and
establishment of reciprocal tours was
a new initiative that was born from
the desire to provide fringe national
squad members an opportunity for
international competition. It has proven
to be a resounding success with great
collaboration established between
Australia and Japan. We will be continuing
to foster this relationship and provide
game opportunities in future years.
Immediately after the NTC challenge I
was fortunate to attend the final weeks
of the USA finals to witness USC take
away the NCAA championship for the
2nd year running. It was a thrill to see
our 3 Australian boys captained by Joel
Dennerley take out the championship. Joel
was also awarded with all-American status.
November 2010
NTC challenge- another high quality
event this year hosted on the Gold Coast.
NSWIS won their 1st title after a close
fought game with WAIS, with former
title holders QAS finishing in 3rd place.
A feature of the competition was the
international flavour that New Zealand
added with their inclusion into the
competition, providing our NTC teams
with an extra game in the round stages.
Following the NTC challenge a squad of
27 players was announced to contest the
Volvo Cup- Miskolc
February 2011
The Australian Men’s Team assembled
in Budapest in preparation for the Volvo
Cup - a 4 team International Tournament
in Miskolc 2 hours north of Budapest. The
young Sharks team comprised of 4 players
drawn from the Australian National
League and 11 others playing with clubs in
Europe and from the US Collegiate system.
The team was Joel Dennerley, Aidan Roach,
Chris Dyson, Jeremy Davie, Rob Maitland
(Captain), Anthony Martin, Aaron Younger,
Tyler Martin, Joel Swift, Johnno Cotterill,
Mace Rapsey, Lachlan Hollis, Carl Zvekan,
Joszef Baczer, Dan Young.
The tournament was a fantastic
opportunity to bring together our
overseas based players along with
providing opportunities for younger
players to experience high level
international competition.
In a fantastic effort the Aussie Sharks
surfaced just behind Hungary and
ahead of Germany and Canada to
take second place. In the final game
of this tournament against world
number 7 Germany, and with the
experience of Rob Maitland and Anthony
Martin missing due to Spanish club
commitments, the Sharks went into
this encounter as underdogs. However
with an aggressive start to the game
the Sharks jumped the Germans and
hung on to the one goal margin, bearing
testament to my belief in the increased
depth within the national squad.
May 2011
Boot Camp held at Jervis Bay - our first
assembly of the complete national
squad (with the return of all overseas
players) did not occur until May. In
addition to regular training at NSWIS,
the squad also underwent a two day
bonding/boot camp at the Jervis Bay
naval base. The players and staff who
attended all reported positive reviews
and experiences that they felt would
certainly be beneficial for the team in
the upcoming international season. The
players have expressed that they are very
keen to undertake this type of activity in
preparation for London 2012.
March 2011: All stars game
A great addition to the NL fixture, born
through the suggestion of Jeff Barrow, to
showcase the best talent in Australia in
a similar manner to what happens in the
professional sporting leagues in the USA.
This was without doubt the highest
quality game played in Australia this
season. The skill and pace of the game
was equivalent to an international game
and both players and supporters agreed
it was a resounding success.
The inaugural victors of the Andrew
Kerr Cup were the Southern team after
clinching victory in overtime.
Following the game an All Stars team
of 13 players was announced based
upon performances in the match. In the
future this will become the all-stars team
presented at the annual NL awards dinner.
The 2011 team was Eddie Slade, Sam
McGregor, Brian Alexander, Rhys
Howden, Gavin Woods, Richie Campbell,
Thomas Whalan, Joel Swift, Billy Miller,
Daniel Lawrence, Mitch Baird, Tim
Cleland, Mitch Emery.
World League
> Preliminary rounds
The Australian Sharks men’s water
polo team finished with a perfect eight
wins from as many games in the two
preliminary rounds held in Auckland
and Sydney. Over the course of the two
rounds we took the opportunity to
blood quite a few junior players, using
27 players across the two weeks. Once
again it is testament to the depth of
our programs that we were able to go
through the tournament undefeated.
Europe tour and WL Finals
> Pescara
The overall result and fourth place in
Pescara was not quite as expected or
hoped. Assembling the squad together
for the first time since July last year
presented cohesion difficulties and it’s
always a challenge after such a period of
absence to get all players onto the same
wavelength in terms of playing as a team.
> Budapest
During the week in Hungary we devoted
a lot of time on our attack and defensive
systems and they seemed to be coming
together well in terms of player
understanding and execution. However
in the one exhibition game V Hungary,
we really struggled to again find any
cohesion in attack or defense under
game pressure which was concerning.
> Florence
After a gruelling week of training in
Hungary we headed to Florence, Italy for
the FINA World League finals where we
finished in 6th place.
In the first game we lost any chance of
upsetting Croatia with a shocking 4-0
first quarter. Our inability to convert at
least as many opportunities in front of
goals as our opposition cost us dearly.
We started much better against Canada
in Game 2 but had some defensive lapses
this time allowing them a sniff in the
second quarter. We effectively iced the
game after half time which was pleasing.
Shooting decisions and execution was
our killer in the third game against
Montenegro. Defensively we had a
superb game conceding just four goals
(2 in extraman and 2 penalties) but we
could not put the crunch shots away
when it counted.
This became more evident as we
eventually lost the game on penalties.
Game 4 was against Italy and again a poor
defensive period in the second quarter
allowed them to get a three goal buffer
before we came storming home only to miss
our last extraman attacking play to tie it up.
16 | Australian Water Polo 2010/11 Annual Report

In Game 5 against China we played
superbly for three and a half quarters.
We had a three minute lapse in the
second period and conceded three goals
and then we only conceded one for the
remainder of the game. Attack wise
we were much better - probably due
to more time to set and player belief
in their ability to put it past the lesser
credentialed goal keepers.
The final game against Montenegro was
tragic, after breaking out to a 5-2 lead
we missed a one on none opportunity to
go to a 6-2 lead at half time. We allowed
Montenegro to get back into the game
as players seized up in front of goals in
the second half. This has to be a mental
issue, as we saw so many fantastic
opportunities we created go begging
whilst allowing Montenegro to capitalise
with easy goals at the other end.
The team was Joel Dennerley, Richie
Campbell, Tim Cleland, Mitchell Baird,
Robbie Maitland, Anthony Martin,
Johnno Cotterill, Sam McGregor, Gavin
Woods, Rhys Howden, Billy Miller, Aaron
Younger, Aidan Roach.
European Tour – July 2010
The national junior boys contested two
European tournaments in Macedonia
and Russia in July and August, finishing
a creditable third place in both events.
The squad of 15 players included 10 of
last year’s World Championship party,
with five new players - Thomas Dayman
from SA, Sam Quinn from WA, Hamish
Cuthill, Clayton Whittaker and Connor
Martin from NSW joining the squad.
For all of these boys it was their first
international water polo experience.
Player missing from last year were Wade
Eames and Michael DeGail from NSW
due to scholastic studies, Matthew Giles
from QLD due to an injured shoulder
and Aaron Younger was touring with the
National Men’s Team.
Training Montenegro
We started the tour with a training
camp against the Montenegro U20 side
who were preparing for their European
Championships. This was a true baptism
of fire for the inexperienced boys who
struggled at times. Morning trainings
consisted of tactical and technical
preparation (extra-man attack, defence,
zone defence, counter-attacking
skills etc) followed by strength and
conditioning training in the pool weights
room and/or swimming sessions.
Evening trainings consisted of the games
versus the Montenegro U20 national
team, gaining solid match practice.
Training Croatia
This training camp consisted of morning
sessions on our own doing swimming
fitness and skills trainings. The
afternoons saw joint training sessions
with the YUG Dubrovnik junior teams,
which was not of a great standard. YUG
were great hosts and provided us with
sports physiologists to assist with testing,
the boys completed many tests and we
have the results which compare our boys
to the Croatian team. A highlight from
this part of the tour was an opportunity
to play a practice game against the
Croatian Men’s team which was a
humbling experience for most players.
Skopje Tournament
The first tournament was a four-nation
event in Skopje, the capital city of
Macedonia. The tournament teams were
not U20 teams. We played the senior
Macedonian Team a Serbian B side and
a Macedonian U20 side. While third
place was a good result, it was extremely
disappointing to have dropped a very
winnable game to the Serbian B side on
the last day. There were, however, many
positives to arise from the tournament,
notably five players tasting their first
international games. We were able to
catch the teams by surprise with our
strong counter-attack game, which
set up some big attacking score lines,
especially in the last game against
Serbia B. The zone defence executed
throughout the entire tournament
was very effective and no team scored
more than one goal against us while
playing zone, which met our game plan
of forcing a low percentage shot late
in the opposition attack allowing us to
counter attack was very effective. Blake
Edwards was the stand-out Australian
player at this tournament, displaying
excellent leadership. Both goal keepers
kept us in touch with the older teams in
the tournament making many
excellent saves.
Training Turkey
The other activity undertaken on the
tour was a training camp conducted
in Istanbul, Turkey. We had three
days training and preparing for the
tournament in Kazan. We played a
practice game against the Turkish
national team where we started poorly,
before playing some good water polo in
the late quarters. The boys had a great
time at the grand bizarre buying many
gifts for family and friends back home.
Kazan Tournament
We then ventured to Kazan in Russia
to contest a five-nation tournament.
The format of this was a round-robin
style, with all teams meeting each other
during the four days. Despite being a
U20 tournament, the competition was
definitely stronger than Macedonia with
highly ranked European teams Serbia,
Greece and Italy, joining Russia and
Australia. Third place in such a highly
ranked tournament was a terrific result,
but we should have done better. The
loss to Italy was a disappointment for
the boys who did not stick to the game
plan. Many appreciative comments were
passed on the high standard and level of
skill that the team exhibited. However,
I believe the major positive to come out
of the tournament was the belief the
players found in their ability and more
importantly the belief that they can
beat any team if they stick to the game
plan. After humiliating loss to Italy,
the confidence the boys to beat Russia
and gain a draw with Serbia helped to
18 | Australian Water Polo 2010/11 Annual Report

smash any of the mental barriers or fears
they may have held about playing to a
structured game plan. The most valuable
Australian player for this tournament as
determined by the management was
Edward Slade, who performed superbly
in goals in the three games he started
as keeper (James Clark played the other
one). He was named the goalkeeper of
the tournament. Sam Quinn, who backed
up his strong performance in Skopje with
another fine display especially in playing
the centre-back role.
Conclusion
Obviously results are what everyone
looks at and from that end we had some
terrific tournaments. Our third placing
in the Russian tournament was our best
result in terms of the calibre of teams
that were competing. A draw in the final
game against Serbia was just not enough
to win the tournament, which featured
two of the top three teams to finish at
last year’s world championships.
To give a high number of players
exposure to competition at the
international level, over a prolonged
period (five weeks). I also wanted to
identify which players were capable of
maintaining consistent form over this
intensive period.
To have players understand and practise
the systems that will be utilised in our
world championship assault.
To play with belief and confidence!
The current squad is an excellent group
of dedicated athletes.
Benefits Derived From Tour
• Confidence and the belief we can beat
anybody.
• Confidence in the game-plan.
• Exposure to international competition
over an extended period.
• The opportunity to “blood” new players
and experiment with tactics and
positional variations.
Perth Camp – 3 Days after U20s
The training camp in Perth was the
first stage of preparation for the World
Championships in August 2011. We
invited 20 boys to the training camp
where we selected a smaller squad
to tour Europe later in the year. All
morning sessions were fitness and skills
preparation while all afternoon trainings
were physical preparation (weights) and
game and extra man practise. During
this training camp we played games
against the born 93 and the senior
centre forwards team which gave us
some strong competition.
Sydney Camp – 3 Days after
National League
The training camp in Sydney was the
last stage of preparation for the World
Championships. We invited 18 boys to
the training camp where we selected
the squad to tour Europe later in the
year. All sessions were skills and game
preparation. We did not have all of the
players at this camp as three players
were at the world league preliminary
rounds in New Zealand and players
were still not back from professional
duties overseas. We selected 15 boys to
tour with three reserves.
• Goal Keeper: Edward Slade (NSW)
• Goal Keeper: James Clark (WA)
• Centre Forward: James (BJ) Howden (QLD)
• Centre Forward: Jeremy Davie (NSW)
• Centre Back: Aaron Younger (WA)
• Centre Back: Sam Quinn (WA)
• Centre Back: Matt Giles (QLD)
• Centre Back: Connor Martin (NSW)
• Left Hander: Wade Eames (NSW)
• Left Hander: Adam Polivka (NSW)
• Driver/Shooter: Clayton Whittaker (NSW)
• Driver/Shooter: Blake Edwards (VIC)
• Driver/Shooter: Paul Sindone (NSW)
• Driver/Shooter: James Fannon (WA)
• Driver/Shooter: Nick Redbond (WA)
Non Travelling Reserves
• Nick Godfrey (QLD)
• George Ford (WA)
• Perry Sort (WA)
• Michael DeGail (NSW)
Acknowledgements
On a final note, I would like to thank
David Swift (team manager), Garry
Ryberg (team manager) and Daniel
Flahive (referee) for their contributions
to the national junior team program.
A considerable amount of time was
volunteered by David and Garry and in
organising camps and the international
tour, while Daniel was heavily involved
in all training sessions with opponents
and the tournaments. Their support
throughout the tour was invaluable.
Australian Youth boys B93
2010/2011
During the period from July 2010 to June
2011, unfortunately I was not able to get
organised more than one training camp
for that period of time being extremely
busy with running the National Training
Centre in Melbourne for both genders
and being involved with Women’s
National Program. Apart from the
training camp that has been held in
Perth in January 2011 straight after
the U20s National Championship, my
original plan was to tour overseas with
the boys again even being non travelling
year for that age group and to run few
state training camps with respective
state members while on the trip in
certain states with Women’s National
League Tigers Team. The reason that I
haven’t been able to complete what was
planned is that I had been appointed to
tour with Australian National Women’s
team at the FINA World Championship
in Shanghai. Although the respective
year of activities has not been extremely
busy I am very pleased to say that the
training camp in Perth went very well
considering that we were doing it in
conjunction with National Men’s Centre
Forward Camp. The boys were working
hard those three days of camp being
three hours in the water twice a day. We
were focusing on implementing the new
efficient way of movements through the
water into the game situation and also
defensive structure of extra man play.
The whole group had a team presence by
being in full Australian national outfit,
at all times. At the end of the camp
the players were debriefed about their
performances at the camp and what is
expected from them in the future and
what areas they need to improve.
Senior Women’s Report
After our very good
performances in the World
League Finals in 2010 where
we won the silver medal but
lost to the USA twice in penalty
shootouts (once in the round
and the other in the final), we
were looking to build on this
performance in the World Cup in
New Zealand as we had gained
qualification for this through the
withdrawal of Africa & Brazil.
In preparation for this we had a training
camp with the USA at the AIS in Canberra
during August, which was followed by
the 10th Anniversary Sydney Olympics
Tournament, in Sydney at Homebush.
This was an extremely strong
tournament with the top 5 teams from
the World League participating, USA,
Greece, Russia, China and Canada. We
went through the rounds undefeated
with our only blemish being a 10-10
draw with Canada. More importantly
we beat the USA 10-9 in the rounds
and 10-8 in the final to make up for our
previous 2 penalty shootout losses.
World Cup, Christchurch
New Zealand
We went into the World Cup very
confident of being able to defend our
title that we won back in 2006 at Tianjin,
China. We hadn’t lost a game of water
polo in 2010 during normal playing
time, however we had lost 3 penalty
shootouts, twice USA and China.
We went through the rounds undefeated
beating New Zealand 17-4, USA 7-5
and Russia 10-8 to top our group. This
then put us up against Greece in the
quarterfinals who have been a bit of a
bogey team for us over the last decade.
We accounted for them quite easily 11
to 7 which then set us up for a semi final
clash with Russia. After being ahead 8-5
and 11-8 the Russians fought back with
the help of a lopsided penalty count to
take the game to 11-10 with two minutes
remaining before we held on for the win.
This put us in the final against the USA
and there was a lot of talk around the
pool and on the websites that we were
the favourites, even though the USA
had not lost a major competition since
the Beijing Olympics. The USA came out
firing and were not going to give up their
mantle easily and scored 2 goals in their
very first two attacks. Australia looked
unsettled and nervous and played
accordingly. The game was all but over at
half time with the USA leading 6-0.
To the players credit they did not
lie down and came out and scored
two goals themselves at the start of
the second half with their first two
attacks. Unfortunately on our third
attack a penalty shot was stopped by
the USA goalkeeper, which halted our
momentum. From then on we created
numerous opportunities but rushed and
poor shot selection did not allow us to
bridge the gap apart from a late goal in
the 4th quarter to go down 6-3.
This was a disappointing way to end the
2010 International season, as we did not
play to our potential in the biggest game
of the year. The pleasing part was that
we were now obviously the second best
team in the world and in a good position
at the half way mark of the Olympic cycle.
Institute Challenge
The 6th running of the annual Institute
Challenge was held at the AIS in November
and was won by Queensland for the
third time 10-8 against NSWIS. The VIS
competed for the 1st time as a squad and
won their first medal with a 7-6 win over
WAIS. The Composite team finished 5th.
Canada Cup
Due to injuries, work commitments
and giving some players valuable
international experience we took
a relatively inexperienced team to
Montreal for a training camp and the
Canada Cup.
The team performed very well defeating
China 5-4, Italy 15-11, and Canada 11-5
in the rounds, then in the semi final we
beat Italy again 13-9 to advance to the
final against China.
Unfortunately the Chinese were too
strong and captalised on their chances
on their way to defeating us 7-9.
2010 Internationals played
Played 25 games. Won 19, drew 4 (lost 3
in penalty shoot out), lost 2.
Of these 22 games 14 of them were
against teams ranked higher than
us (2009 rankings) in which we lost
2 in regulation time and 3 in penalty
shootouts.
2011 Training Camps
Training camps were held in early
January (AIS), Jan/Feb (Gold Coast),
March (Sydney) and April (AIS). On top
of this we had the Italian team come
out for a training camp/test series in
Perth during Feb were we played 5 test
matches. We won 13-10, 16-7, 13-9 and
10-7 while drawing the 2nd test 11-11.
We would like to thank the Dolphins,
Fremantle and Torpedoes clubs for
hosting the games as they all went out
of their way to help promote the tests
and big crowds attended all the games.
World League
The international season started
immediately after the National League
finals and we picked 13 players to fly to
Auckland for round 1. We beat NZ 16-5,
Japan 16-3 and China 11-10.
We then replaced 4 senior players for the
rounds in Sydney and went through the
rounds undefeated beating Australian juniors
14-6, Japan 14-5, NZ 10-6 and China 9-7.
As part of our World League Finals
preparation we attended the Kirishi Cup
in Russia were we finished 2nd to the
host nation. Our results were USA 7-7,
Greece 14-11, Russia 10-19, Hungary 15-
15 and Kazakhstan 16-7.
Italy was our next stop for a training
camp and one off test with the Italians
at their new national team-training base
in Ostia. We spent five days of training
and defeated them 11-10 in the test
match before heading to Tianjin, China
for the World League Finals.
The squad consisted of 15 players who we
rotated through the finals based on their
performances. We started very strongly
with a 14-6 demolishing of Spain, before
beating Canada 10-8. This meant the
winner of the Russian game would qualify
first in our group and unfortunately a 0-3
first quarter put us behind the eight ball
and we couldn’t recover losing 9-12. Our
quarterfinal win against Greece 10-8,
set us up for a semi with the USA. We
started strongly and held a 6-5 halftime
lead, but unfortunately a 0-2 3rd quarter
gave the USA the break they needed and
went on to beat us 7-8 after we levelled
at 7-7 in the 4th.
This then put us in the Bronze medal
match against hometown favourites
China. We played our most inexperienced
team resting Bronwen Knox & Glencora
Ralph for this match to give our juniors
the opportunity to perform under the
highest pressure. The team played very
tough defence especially in the 2nd half
as we turned a 3-4 deficit at halftime
into a 7-5 victory. An outstanding team
performance, which set us up well for the
up coming World Championships for the
Seniors & Juniors.
This was the 6th medal since the
inception of the Women’s World League
back in 2004 with the inaugural year
and 2006 being the only time we haven’t
medalled.
Throughout 2010 -11 the following
programs were run for our 2nd tier
senior players and junior players:-
World Student Games
A training camp was held in Sydney
following the National League Finals
series. This camp, held in conjunction
with the Born 91 National Women ran
for 6 days over the period 7 - 12 May.
The focus of the camp was to define the
Team responsibilities and expectations,
test player fitness, begin the selection
process for the WSG team, introduce the
team tactics, and play training games
versus the Junior Women.
Eddie Denis would Iike to thank Jenny
Liessmann (manager), Peter Szliagyi
and Ryan Moar for helping organise the
training camps in Sydney.
Born 91’s
The Australian Junior Women’s Water
Polo Program had a successful 12-month
campaign, which included two overseas
tours, three training camps in Australia
and the opportunity to play on the World
League Preliminary Rounds in Sydney.
In July 2010 the Team travelled to
Auckland, New Zealand and Los Angeles,
California. The team had a successful
test series with the New Zealand Senior
Women’s and collected a silver medal in
a tournament in Los Alamitos.
In September 2010 the team travelled
to Russia and to Greece. In Zlatoust,
Russia they played four test matches
against the reigning World Champions
losing three and winning one. In Athens
they contested a nation tournament
and finished in 2nd place losing final to
Russia 8-11. This was followed with 6
test matches against Greece winning 3,
drawing 1 and losing 2 by 1 goal.
The preparation for the FINA Junior
Women’s World Championships
started with a training camp at the AIS,
Canberra after the Institute Challenge
with 26 players. This was followed with
another training camp in Perth, January
after the National Junior Championships
with the Born 93’s National Squad.
After the National League Final we
had a selection camp with 16 players
in Sydney with the World University
Games Squad. They then played
in the second round of the World
League preliminaries in Sydney due to
Kazakhstan withdrawing and performed
very creditably winning two games
against Japan 12-7 and New Zealand
13-8 and losing to both the Australian
Senior team 6-14 and China 7-12.
Peter Szilagyi would Iike to thank all
coaches, athletes, officials, volunteers
and parents for supporting the program.
Born 93’s
The 12 month period from July 1, 2010
– June 30, 2011 was a particularly busy
one for the National Born 1993 or Later
Girls Squad.
In July 2010 a squad of 15 players toured
Greece and The Netherlands taking
part in two training camps and two
international competitions over a three
week period.
In the 5 team Pythia Cup we finished
2nd after beating Serbia 21-3, France
10-2 drawing with Greece 10-10 and
losing to Hungary 8-12.
The Butterfly Trophy in Emmen, Holland
was contested by 6 nations in which we
finished 5th after losing to Hungary 17-
20, Greece 9-12, Italy 10-11, Holland 7-9
and defeating Canada 11-10.
In March 2011 the team had a ten
day tour to Hawaii for an invitational
tournament hosted by the University of
Hawaii were they defeated University of
California – East Bay 9-8 and University
of California – San Diego 10-7 and losing
to Canada Senior women 7-15, San
Diego State University 8-10, University of
Southern California 7-15 and University
of Hawaii 8-10.
Ryan Moar would like to thank
Tracey Mirabito (manager) for her
tireless efforts in assisting with all
arrangements for tours plus training
camps and other administrative tasks
throughout the year. Also, thanks to
both of the referees that toured with the
squad – Andrew Carney (European Tour)
and Gabor Boros (Hawaii Tour).
Born 94’s
The born 94’s or Youth Squad
participated in the following activities:-
In July 2010 attended the Pan Pac’s in
Auckland, New Zealand. This was the
squad’s first main event together as a
Team. During the Pan Pacs we selected
two even teams who competed one
week against U20’s (born 91’s) and the
second week against U18’s (born 93’s).
This was then followed up with a test
series and a joint training camp with
Youth New Zealand Team. Overall this
tour was very beneficial and the teams
first milestone in the road to Perth.
Aleks Osadchuk toured around Australia
and conducted state based training
camps in Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane
and Perth. These training camps are
a fantastic opportunity to see the
athletes in their own environment. We
have used slightly extended squads
for greater athlete exposure while
teaching individual skills and technical
requirements to help prepare all players
for the Youth squad.
From these training camps we selected
15 players for the European tour to Italy
and Hungary for a training camp and to
Greece for the Itea Cup, in July.
Aleks Osadchuk would Iike to thank all
coaches, athletes, officials, volunteers
and parents for supporting the program.
For all our programs to run so smoothly
there is a lot of people that I definitely
need to thank as without their efforts,
commitment and passion we certainly
would not be as successful as we have
been over the past 7 years.
A huge thank you must go to the following:
• To all the athletes who participated
in all the programs from the seniors
through to the born 94’s. Unfortunately
some of you were not selected in
certain teams or squads, while others
were rewarded for their performances
and dedication. Without all of you
there to help each other develop and
push your teammates to the extremes,
the pursuit of everyone becoming
better players none of our results
would have been possible.
• Lynne Morrison and Jenny Liessmann
have done a fantastic job managing
the teams over the last 12 months.
Without their efforts the tours would
not have run so smoothly and the
team’s performances would have
been affected.
22 | Australian Water Polo 2010/11 Annual Report

• Liz Steet, Laura Schwab, James Trotter
(physios) and Grace Bryant (doctor)
for their continual fantastic efforts in
keeping the players fit, healthy and
always allowing us to get our best
team in the water.
• My assistant and SIS/SAS coaches
throughout 2010-11 Greig Richardson
(VIC), Ryan Moar (NSWIS), Aleks
Osadchuk (QAS), Peter Szilagyi (WAIS),
Eddie Denis (SASI) and Dalibor Maslan
(VIS). They have the responsibility of
working with the girls on a day-to-day
basis in their home states and when
we come together for training camps/
tours/tournaments take on a wide
range of responsibilities that play a
huge part in preparing the athletes to
perform at their best. Without these
guys the program definitely wouldn’t
work or be as successful.
• The Sports Medicine staff working
with the SIS/SAS programs and
Andrea Mosler our Sports Medicine
Coordinator for once again doing a
fantastic job in organizing and keeping
all the service providers informed and
working towards a common goal.
But most recently for all the work she
has put into the Athlete Monitoring
system, which allows us to keep a daily
check on all the athlete’s health, which
has proved invaluable.
Photo Credit: Anthony Pearse, Pearse Photography
• The Sports Science staff working
with the SIS/SAS programs and Ted
Polglaze, Sally Clark our Sport Science
Coordinators over the last 12 months
for doing a superb job in keeping the
squad and coaches abreast of the latest
training techniques and planning of their
physical preparation. Laura Garvican has
come on board in the absence of Sally
Clark who is on maternity leave and has
done a fantastic job.
• Debra Waser and the AIS, Iain
Brambell and the ASC, John Coates
and AOC for their continued support
and help. Without their support it
would be impossible to run a world
class international program and
win international medals. You all
continually have looked after our
program beyond our expectations.
• The AIS and SIS/SAS programs support
staff for their day to day help in running
the programs and in particularly the
strength and conditioning coaches
lead by Julian Jones, the physiologists
lead by Ted Polglaze and Sally Clark,
the nutritionists led by Greg Cox, the
psychologists lead by Alex Gorman in
2010 and Kirsten Peterson in 2011,
the skill acquisition staff led by Adam
Gorman and the performance analysis
staff led by Tamara Kerford. They play a
huge part in helping the athletes be the
best-prepared team in the world and are
always looking for the edge to make the
difference between success and failure.
• The National League coaches, who
have been very supportive and
understanding of the National
team’s commitments and the need
for the team to have training camps
throughout the season.
• Chris Harrison, John Whitehouse and
the AWPI office for their full support in
helping the program run smoothly.
• AWPI board for being supportive
and understanding the difficult
circumstances that the team goes
through with the changing of so many
players after the Olympics.
• Reg Hatch for his personal advice
and guidance in helping be become a
better coach.
• Second last but not least to Karen
Buffier for the tremendous job she
does in the everyday administration
of the AIS program. With Karen being
on maternity leave for a good part of
the year, Cathy Perre filled in and did
a fantastic job. Without their help &
support my job would be a nightmare.
• Finally to the best wife in the world
Sonia and my beautiful children Rebel
and Cooper. Without your full support
and love I certainly would not be able
to devote the time to try and help the
girls achieve their dreams.
Thank you.
Athletes’ Commission Report
The Athletes Commission over
the past 12 months has provided
an active voice of the athletes in
our sport to the AWPI Board and
its executive staff.
The current Athletes Commission was
formed after the Beijing 2008 Olympic
Games. The commission comprises Nikita
Cuffe (2004 & 2008 Olympian), Bronwyn
Knox (2008 Olympian), Toby Jenkins
(2004 Olympian), Thomas Whalan
(2000, 2004 & 2008 Olympian) and Trent
Franklin (2004 & 2008 Olympian).
The commissioner’s roles as outlined in
the charter are to:
• Advise the board of AWPI on any
matters relating to water polo which
impact on Water Polo Athletes;
• Represent the Athletes on AWPI’s board
through the Athletes Commission
Chairman who is a voting member of
the board;
• Nominate representatives from among
their members to represent Australian
Water Polo Athletes on AWPI as
requested from time to time;
• Nominate athletes for election by
ballot to the Australian Olympic
Committee Athletes’ Commission;
• Provide leadership and direction on
matters that directly relate to Water
Polo Athletes.
In the last year we have worked through
a consultative process to review and
where relevant provide recommendation
to the board. The following are some of
the issues represented.
National Water Polo League
(NWPL) – Review
Through the National Water Polo
League Review the members of the
Athletes Commission provided their
insight into the existing structure of
the league and many proposed some
potential improvements. We feel it is
such a critical component of the elite
pathway for our athletes. The continual
improvement of the elite pathway is very
important for the success of our athletes
on the world stage.
We would like to thank all stakeholders
for their contribution to this also. There
is much focus on the athletes which is
important for the sport. It is however
important to thank the clubs, states and
community that allow us to perform at
our best.
We would like to thank the Australian
Water Polo Inc. Board and its CEO
for engaging the review and we look
forward to the future of the peak
competition in Australia.
Elite Athlete Pathway
We have recently seen changes to the Elite
Athlete Pathway, through the changes
of the U18 competition. The Athletes
Commission after some robust discussion
provided its feedback to the CEO relating
to views of the athletes. The ability to
have this feedback sought from the CEO
and the Board is a great asset to both the
athletes and the sport as a whole.
The Athletes’ Commission would like to
encourage any athletes who have any
issues, concerns or ideas they may have
relating to the sport. We look forward to
working with Australian Water Polo and
its athletes to further develop our sport
on a domestic and international stage
over the coming year.
Referees’ Commission Report
The Commission has continued
to provide recommendations to
the AWPI Board on referees to
be included on the FINA list and
in relation to appointments to
International Tournaments.
This year has also seen the Commission
liase with National Senior Coaches to
provide Referees for NTC tournaments
and National training camps.
2011 FINA Referees: Noel Harrod, Daniel
Flahive, Nicola Johnson, Nick Hodges,
Andrew Carney and Megan Varlow.
2012 FINA Referees: Daniel Flahive,
Andrew Carney Nicola Johnson, Nick
Hodges, Daniel Bartels, Megan Varlow
and Gabor Boris.
The commission wish to thank and
congratulate Noel Harrod on many years
of service to Australian and International
Water Polo. Noel will continue to referee
in Australia.
National League
During 2011 we built on our group of
delegates and would like to thank Greg
McFadden and John Fox for allowing
the institute coaches to handle this
important role. We’d also like to thank
the institute coaches for their consistent
efforts. I know that many referees
appreciated post game feedback from
coaches who they respect.
We want to ensure that we develop
referees each season and having
appropriately qualified Delegates is an
important aspect of the assessment and
development process.
The commission will continue to
approach suitably qualified delegates
to undertake referee assessment and
oversee the correct running of National
League games.
We also hope that coaches are prepared
to provide their home delegate with a
copy of the game video, if appropriate.
Many coaches understand the benefit of
referee development therefore we would
be happy for them to add constructive
comments for the Delegate’s use.
National Age Championships
We have made a concerted effort in
2011 to ensure we have a commissioner,
FINA List Referee, or National League
Referee at all championships to act
as Technical Director. We believe this
an important role as many referees
appreciate the regular assessment
and value the referee structure and
organisation.
FINA List Referees are required each year
to make themselves available for one of
these tournaments.
2011 Current Commission
Members
Michael McNeill, Michael Hart, Mike
Defina, Scott Schweickle and Phil Scales.
Financial Assistance for National
League and FINA List Referees
A number of FINA List referees asked
for touring shirts that they could give
as presents to other referees and we
provided NL with polo shirts to wear to
NL games. The commission would like to
thank Chris Harrison for supporting this
initiative.
We would like to thank John
Whitehouse, Chris Harrison and Peter
Hobday for their assistance in 2011 and
look forward to 2012.
Notes to and forming part of the accounts
Note 1: Statement of
Accounting Policies
These financial statements are special
purpose reports which have been
prepared specifically for distribution
to members in accordance with the
Associations constitution and for the
purpose of acquitting grants received
from the Australian Sports Commission
and the Australian Olympic Committee.
The Association is of the type identified
in Statement of Accounting Concepts 1
as a non-reporting entity. The statements
have been prepared in accordance with
applicable accounting standards.
a) Basis of Preparation
The statements have been prepared on
an accruals basis from the records of the
Association. They are based on historic
costs and do not take into account the
changing values of money.
b) Revenue and Other Income
Government grants are recognised
as revenue in accordance with the
requirements and conditions of the
Australian Sports Commission Funding
& Service Level Agreement and the
Australian Olympic Committee grant.
Revenue from the sale of goods is
recognised on delivery of the goods to
the customer.
Interest revenue is recognised over the
period for which the funds are invested.
All revenue is stated net of the amount of
goods and services tax.
c) Cash and Cash Equivalents
Cash and cash equivalents include cash on
hand, foreign currency account, deposits
held at call with banks and other short
term liquid investments with original
maturities of three months or less.
d) Goods and Services Tax (GST)
Revenues, expenses and assets are
recognised net of the amount of GST, except
where the amount of GST incurred is not
recoverable from the Australian Taxation
Office. In these circumstances the GST
is recognised as part of the cost of the
acquisition or as part of an item of expense.
Receivables and payables in the statement of
financial position are shown inclusive of GST.
Cash Flows are presented in the
statement of cash flows on a gross
basis, except for the GST component of
investing and financing activities which
are disclosed as operating cash flows.
e) Property, Plant and Equipment
Each class of property, plant and
equipment is carried at cost or fair value
as indicated, less where applicable,
any accumulated depreciation and
impairment losses.
Plant and Equipment
Items of plant and equipment are
measured on the cost basis less
depreciation and impairment losses.
The carrying amount of plant and
equipment is reviewed annually by
management to ensure it is not in excess
of the recoverable amount from these
assets. The recoverable amount is assessed
on the basis of the expected net cash
flows that will be received from the asset’s
employment and subsequent disposal.
The expected net cash flows have been
discounted to their present values in
determining recoverable amounts.
Depreciation
The depreciable amount of all fixed
assets, is depreciated on a diminishing
value basis over the asset’s useful
life commencing from the time the
asset is held ready for use. Leasehold
improvements are depreciated over the
shorter of either the unexpired period of
the lease or the estimated useful lives of
the improvements.
The depreciation rates used for each
class of depreciable assets are
Computer Equipment - 40%, Furniture
Fixtures and Fittings - 20-25%.
The assets’ residual values and useful
lives are reviewed and adjusted if
appropriate, at each statement of
financial performance dates.
An asset’s carrying amount is written
down immediately to its recoverable
amount if the asset’s carrying
amount is greater than its estimated
recoverable amount.
Gains and losses on disposals are
determined by comparing proceeds with
the carrying amount. These gains and
losses are included in the statement of
comprehensive income. When revalued
assets are sold amounts included in the
revaluation reserve relating to that asset
are transferred to retained earnings.
Australian Water Polo 2010/11 Annual Report | 43

Notes to and forming part of the accounts
f) Impairment
At each reporting date, the Association
reviews the carrying values of its tangible
and intangible assets to determine
whether there is any indication that
those assets have been impaired. If such
an indication exists, the recoverable
amount of the asset being the higher of
the asset’s fair value less costs to sell and
value in use is use is compared to the
asset’s carrying value. Any excess of the
asset’s carrying value over its recoverable
amount is expensed to the statement of
comprehensive income.
g) Employee Entitlements
Annual Leave
Employee Entitlements are measured
as the amount unpaid at the reporting
at the pay rates expected to be paid in
respect of the employee’s service up
to that date. Accrued annual leave is
treated as a current liability.
Sick Leave
Unused sick leave does not give rise to a
liability as it is not considered probable
that sick leave taken in the future will
be greater than the benefits accrued in
the future.
Long Service Leave
Long Service Leave is recognised and
measured as the present value of
expected future payments to be made in
respect of services provided by employees
to the reporting date. The entitlement
for long service leave is measured in
accordance with applicable state and
federal industrial relations laws.
Superannuation
The employer’s obligation for employee
entitlements is recognised as an expense in
the period it relates. Expense is determined
based on 9% of employee salaries.
h) Trade Payables
Trade and other payables are stated at
cost which approximates fair value to
the short term nature of these liabilities.
i) Inventories
Inventories are measured at the lower of
cost and net realisable value.
j) Income Tax
The Association is an exempt body for
income tax purposes under Division 50
of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997.
k) Comparative Figures
Where required by Accounting Standards
comparative figures have been
adjusted to conform to changes in the
presentation of the current financial year.
l) New Australian Accounting Standards
Issued but not Effective
At reporting date a number of Australian
Accounting Standards have been issued
by the Australian Accounting Standards
but are not yet operative. These have
not been adopted early by Australian
Water Polo Incorporated as they have
been assessed to be not materially
affecting the financial statements.
