In Game 5 against China we played
superbly for three and a half quarters.
We had a three minute lapse in the
second period and conceded three goals
and then we only conceded one for the
remainder of the game. Attack wise
we were much better - probably due
to more time to set and player belief
in their ability to put it past the lesser
credentialed goal keepers.
The final game against Montenegro was
tragic, after breaking out to a 5-2 lead
we missed a one on none opportunity to
go to a 6-2 lead at half time. We allowed
Montenegro to get back into the game
as players seized up in front of goals in
the second half. This has to be a mental
issue, as we saw so many fantastic
opportunities we created go begging
whilst allowing Montenegro to capitalise
with easy goals at the other end.
The team was Joel Dennerley, Richie
Campbell, Tim Cleland, Mitchell Baird,
Robbie Maitland, Anthony Martin,
Johnno Cotterill, Sam McGregor, Gavin
Woods, Rhys Howden, Billy Miller, Aaron
Younger, Aidan Roach.
Acknowledgements
The list is long and there are many
people who work tirelessly behind the
scenes to ensure success of our program.
Those who I would like to highlight include:
Chris Harrison CEO for his ongoing
support of the men’s program
and approving the long list of
recommended/ proposed activities that
are deemed highly important if we are
going to be successful internationally.
John Whitehouse, like Tom, he is held in
high esteem with the international water
polo community. John liaises endlessly
with FINA and national federations
to ensure that our national teams
receive every opportunity to travel and
compete to the best of our ability and
opportunities. John also performed many
of the administrative tasks associated
with team camps, travel and competition.
Tom Hoad, highly respected in the world
of water polo and has extensive contacts
and knowledge of the happenings
throughout the world. Tom is fantastic in
gaining opportunities for competition and
common training when teams look to travel
overseas and prepare for major events.
At our request he attends the calendar
conference every year to ensure Australian
teams are entered into international events
and training agreements.
Australian Sports Commission for their
continued support by way of direction,
guidance and funding. Many thanks also
to our sport liaison officers, Deb Waser,
Mel Backhouse and Wanda Sipa who
have been forever helpful in their ongoing
support for the program and myself
personally in developing and refining my
coaching role to be more successful.
Paul Oberman, assistant coaching role.
WAIS coach.
Frank Otto, who has been extremely
valuable in his European liaison role and
as assistant coach for the national team.
assisted during world league preliminary
rounds in Sydney.
Simon Daley, QAS coach and assisted
national team at world league.
Dalibor Maslan VIS and Eddie Denis SASI
on the 2012 Olympic team as section
manager for men’s water polo.
Garry Rydberg stepped with ease into
the manager’s role for the World League/
World Cup tour.
Nathan Thomas’ assistance with
organizing boot camp and always
the national program is progressing.
Still very highly respected throughout
Europe and a valuable contact to have in
player negotiations and placements into
European clubs.
Andrew Stanford sports medicine
and servicing of players was adequate.
Andrew Yanitsas sports science
coordinator. Coding of games for
coaches, player review.
Jeff Barrow, All stars game funding and
organization. Without Jeff’s considerable
support this game would never have
eventuated.
David Lyall recently appointed media
liaison officer who has worked to provide
much appreciated media exposure and
coverage of the sport.
Referees’ Commission and in particular
Daniel Flahive and Michael Hart who
toured with the team.
Barry Grant, goal setting/leadership
seminars for the national squad.
Andrew Gott, traveling physio to world
league finals. Andrews experience as a
past national team player was a great
compliment to his high level of treatment
provided and the players appreciated
having another voice of knowledge
concerning international water polo.
Adam Smith, physio world league
preliminary rounds.
CF Specialist training camps coaches
Mark Oberman, Andrew Kerr and
Daniel Marsden.
their ongoing support and cooperation
with national team requirements.
