Integrated Medical Education
requires:
• Integration of the various stakeholders – hospitals (full and community
affiliates), PGME and UGME, clinical departments, office-based teaching
sites into the mission of the Faculty of Medicine
• Mechanisms to ensure inclusive, collaborative and efficient partnerships
with all stakeholders
• New pedagogical methods, educational technologies and business models
Integrated Medical Education
principles:
• Teaching and learning by medical students and trainees will include a broad
spectrum of experiences
• Equally recognize the strengths of the teaching and learning culture within each
site
• Requires a pan-departmental approach to the development and implementation
of the curriculum
• Adopt a learner-centred approach that truly values the education of all learners
across the continuum of medical education
INTEGRATED MEDICAL EDUCATION
at the University of Toronto
Integrated Medical Education (IME) is a project of transformational
change in the way our learners, full and community affiliated hospitals,
faculty members and staff think and engage in the delivery of medical
education at the University of Toronto (U of T). Successful outcomes of
IME will be the excellent performance of learners and teachers in the
short-term and improved quality of care in community-affiliated hospital
sites in the long-term. Another important outcome will be the advancement
of academic leadership in the community sites recognized by the Faculty
of Medicine and U of T clinical depart ments as integral to their University
missions and visions.
