Pastor’s Letter
Dear Parishioners:
Happy New Year! While we normally celebrate the New Year on January 1, the new
CHURCH year begins on the first Sunday in Advent, which is today. So, happy New
Church Year! Just as we make New Year’s resolutions, perhaps we can make some spiritual
New Year’s resolutions this weekend so that the coming year will be one of increased
holiness and intimacy with Christ.
Advent is traditionally a time of waiting and preparation. The Church teaches us that during
Advent we prepare for the two “comings of Christ”. The first half of Advent focuses
on the coming of Christ at the end of time. The second half of Advent focuses on the coming
of Christ at Christmas. The lighting of the pink candle in the Advent wreath (which
takes place on the third week of Advent) symbolizes the change in focus from the coming
of Christ at the end of time to the coming of Christ at Christmas.
In either case, the theme of Advent is one of preparation. We prepare our homes for
Christmas by cleaning the house, decorating the home (both indoors and outdoors), extra
cooking and baking, sending Christmas cards, etc. We put in a great deal of time and effort
to make Christmas one of the special times of the year for our families. I would like to
challenge us to make Christmas a special time for our families spiritually. I encourage all
of us to prepare the home of our heart for the coming of Christ.
You should have received in the mail a letter detailing all the special events that will take
place here in the parish for the Advent season; these events are also listed on the page opposite
this page. There is something for everyone! We have events for children and
adults. However, these are only opportunities. As with all opportunities, we can choose to
take advantage of these opportunities or we can choose not to take advantage of these opportunities.
I urge you to take advantage of these opportunities. We often complain about
the secularization of Christmas and how the true meaning of Christmas is being lost. You
and I have some control over that; bring your family to these events and help instill in your
children the true meaning of Christmas and, at the same time, remind yourselves of the true
meaning of this holy season: that God so loved the world that He sent His Son, Jesus
Christ, as the first and greatest of all Christmas gifts, so that, through Christ, we might obtain
the gift of eternal life in heaven.
In particular, this week we are offering a wonderful family movie (The Fourth Wiseman)
and a special Family Evening with St. Nicholas. In addition, don’t forget that Saturday,
December 8 is a Holy Day of Obligation: Immaculate Conception. Let’s honor Mary,
one of the pivotal figures of the Advent season by coming to Mass.
Remember: Together, we can something beautiful for God!

St. Francis Tells the Christmas Story
Friday, December 21
5 PM and 8 PM (two shows)-Church
Presented by your fellow parishioners, St. Francis Tells the Christmas Story is an entertaining
and enjoyable musical portrayal of the birth of Christ as seen through the eyes of the animals
at the nativity. Please join us in this heartwarming reminder of the simplicity of the
Christmas story and re-discover the real “reason for the season.”
To make this event even more meaningful for the children in the audience, we are inviting
them to participate in a procession during the musical to bring non-perishable food items (for
our Outreach Pantry) and present them to the Baby Jesus, as their gift to feed the hungry.
From the adults, we will take up a free-will offering to help defray the cost of presenting this
musical (i.e., costumes, scenery, etc.)
Feast of St. Nicholas
All families are invited to join us for the Feast of St. Nicholas on
Thursday, December 6 in the Church at 6 PM.
St. Nicholas will share the real story of his life with the children.
Children may come in their pajamas for this special night and join
in the story and music.

Confirmation
This Monday, December 3, Bishop John Dunne will administer the Sacrament
of Confirmation to our candidates at 1:30 PM and 4:30 PM. They look to their
Parish Family with an even greater awareness of what the words of St. Paul to
the Corinthians means to them.
Many of those who will receive Confirmation are already actively involved in
many ministries including our Religious Education program, Gr. 6/7/8 Hang Out
Nights, Music Ministry, Altar Servers, Lectors, Ushers, Parish Outreach and Art

Monday Mornings in Advent
Come to 8 AM Mass on Mondays in Advent-December 3, December 10 and December 17.
You will be able to pray the Rosary after Mass or just take some time for your own prayer
and reflection. At 9 AM, we will gather in the Spiritual Life Center for coffee, rolls and a
talk, with some time for discussion and reflection. (If you can’t make Mass, please join

Belong More Deeply
As you know, we have been asking our parishioners to write down the
names of people whom they know who no longer regularly come to
celebrate the Eucharist. We will be placing these names in a basket in
front of the altar. During the season of Advent, we will be praying for
these intentions. I ask that each one of us consciously prays for our
own intention but also to pray for all the intentions placed on the cards.
Let us pray that the Lord will open up their hearts to the call of Christ
in their lives and to belong more deeply to Christ’s family, the Church
through the reception of Holy Communion at Mass.

gifts. Artaban pursues Jesus for 33 years, always missing
him. Along the way, Artaban has to use his three gifts to help
people in dire need. Finally, Artaban encounters the new King,
Jesus Christ. A great movie for all ages (72 minutes long).

Liturgy of the Word
1st Sunday of Advent
Tough economic times weigh on everyone. While some people seem to be able to
afford everything, go everywhere, and enjoy what they want, there are so many people that
have come to a point in their lives where every penny is pinched and every purchase scrutinized.
Data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that consumers are spending
less on big-ticket items to afford basics. Households hit by layoffs, the tight job market, and
heavy debt burdens are holding back on spending. The savings rate has dropped, indicating
that consumers are using up scant resources to stay afloat. Even people who might be able
to spend a little more are being cautious, because the economic mood is so gloomy. The
words of Jesus in today's Gospel could well characterize the overall global experience, "on
earth nations will be in dismay."
It might seem a bit odd that we begin Advent, which is a season of hope, with a rather
dismal and disturbing Gospel. The end of time is not something that we usually think
about to any great extent. We are often more concerned with the anxieties of daily life, as
the Gospel puts it. Those daily worries seem like enough for most of us. We don't need to
add the end of the world on top of it.
But for many people today, in this economic environment, daily anxieties can seem
like the end of the world. Bills mount up, tensions grow, jobs or homes are lost. We need
this season of hope to renew our own longings and expectations. The prophet Isaiah reminds
us that God fulfills his promises. God's mercy endures in every generation, including
ours. The actions we take to assist others become an expression of God's mercy and a sign
of God's renewing hope. In the weeks to come even a small kindness to someone could help
to ease anxiety, and help that person believe that redemption is at hand.

Rosary Christian Mothers
The Rosary Christian Mothers meet on the first Monday evening of each
month. The next meeting will be on Monday, December 3. We will begin
with Rosary at 7:45 PM in the Church, followed by meeting at 8 PM in the
Parish Center.
Holy Name Society
The Holy Name Society invites the men of our parish, young and old, to join us. We can
use the wisdom of the older men and the energy and fresh ideas of our younger men. The
Holy Name Society meets on the second Sunday of each month. Our next meeting will be
on Sunday, December 9. We come together to pray the Rosary at 7:40 AM in the
Church and the meeting will follow the 8 AM Mass at 9 AM in Room 16. Stop by, all

Women’s Prayer Group-evening
We invite all women to gather together once a month on the first Thursday
at 7:30 PM in the Spiritual Life Center on December 6. We will read
the scriptures for the upcoming Sunday and discuss how they relate to us in

Safely Home
Our whole parish family rejoices with the Braun Family in gratitude for the safe return
of Kimberly from active duty. Kimberly Braun-US Army, has returned to the
United States safe and sound from her tour of duty in Iraq. Thank you, Kimberly,
for your most generous service to our country!

Attention High School Seniors
Saint Michael’s College (located in Colchester, Vermont, just outside Burlington) offers a
“Parish Scholarship” worth $20,000 over 4 years. This scholarship is awarded to a student who
is nominated by his or her parish, applies for admission and is admitted by Saint Michael’s College.
