G’day
From the Presidents Pen….
We have re-booked our Trivia night for Saturday 1st June - this night will be held at the Function Room of Oakwood Riding
School. We look forward to every family putting together a table of family and friends and also every family donating a raffle
prize - please start to speak to businesses about a possible donation. There will be great prizes up for grabs such as the 'best
dressed table'! I'm sure it will be an enjoyable night to raise more funds for the club. Associate members are welcome to
attend but this is not an event for the kids. Please see Kaye Cray to reserve your table.
The working bee to repair the yards was held last month and a huge thanks to Mark Cray, Steve Bills, Sara Wayman, Aimee
DeAngelis, Kyle Wayman, Joanne Clark, Kaye Cray, Helen & Laura Travis. There are further works to be carried out this rally
on the yards along Narre Warren North Road - beside the shed. This will be done whilst members are riding on Sunday. We
will also be holding a working bee to repair some of the Cross Country jumps a date will be advised - further advise from
council is required before we can carry out works. Once a date is set all members will be requested to come along and assist
as there are many jobs to complete so stay tuned.
A reminder to all riders with the flush of new grass coming through especially if you pony is prone to founder!
Our Club AGM & Annual Awards night will be held on Friday 19th April commencing at 7pm at the clubrooms.
The club will be providing a finger food supper, and we ask that each family provides a sweet to share. There will be a list
circulating on Sunday to note what you are nominating to bring. Please also advise how many people are attending the
evening for catering purposes. This night is always a highlight to the year and is a social night for everyone to catch up
without horses.
Renewals have been sent out to all current members and are due in BY 30th April 2013. Gill Brown is our membership
coordinator and will be set up inside the clubroom to collect all paperwork and payment on Sunday. Renewal of membership
is not an automatic right. The committee will review each application received prior to granting membership. Our club
MUST complete what is called a 'Strength Return' to PCAV between 15th - 20th May and there is a lot of paperwork to get
through in our club prior to the cut off, so please be diligent as it assists the committee and Gill. Failure to get our paperwork
and payment to the club, will result in not having membership cards for the new financial year. If you are not intending to
renew your membership please advise Gill, it will allow us to look at the interested parties on the waiting list. Should you
have any questions at all in relation to membership renewals, please feel free to speak to myself and/or Gill on Sunday.
See you at the rally.
THE DISTRICT COMMISSIONERS REPORT
APRIL 2013
Our March rally was held at the home grounds of Pakenham Pony Club at Huxtable Reserve, Pakenham. We
started the day early to beat the heat but we also bet the gatekeeper to open the grounds for us!
The cross country course was set out to be the same as when Pakenham held their Horse Trials in February.
From the March Rally:
The weather for the day was forcast to be warm and it certainly delivered!
All riders took the opportunity to walk, the course with their instructor, ride the course in clusters of jumps with their instructor and then after lunch
ride the course individually – which was the same as riding the course if competing at a Pakenham Event.
The day gave every rider the opportunity to get the most out of the jumps that they have on offer and they do have a wide variety. Unlike our
own grounds, the course is on the side of a hill which is a big effort all day to hike up and down the hill!
For those with an iPhone, there is a great app to walk the course with called Cross Country on the Apps Store – there is a Free Version or a full
version for $9.95 which allows you to record all the course as you walk it. It might be aimed at the more serious competitor but if it helps – go for it!
Unfortunately the vet we had pre-booked cancelled at the last minute – I’ll make sure we’ll have a vet to a rally in the coming year.
Due to the heat of the afternoon most of the riders looked after their horses in respect of taking it easy over the course and didn’t push it. I was
very proud watching our riders complete the course with confidence. Some who are a little nervous braved to jumps, some who were really
excited made sure they looked after their horse on a hot day and didn’t over do it. Everyone who rode the course on their own should be very
proud of themselves – you all did a great job! It’s not an easy course!
Due to the heat, we didn’t offer riders to complete another round – instead we offered riders an icypole and a play in the Pakenham Pony Clubs
new water jump – I’m sure there were a lot of soggy jodhpurs in the laundry that night for mums – not to mention the wet socks and boots.
There were lots of giggles and it was an awesome sight with so many riders and horses relaxing and enjoying the afternoon in a rather small water
hole!
Some of our horses and riders are becoming very accustomed to the water!
Unfortunately we did have one fall of the day, but by all reports rider and horse recovered.
Feedback from instructors was that everyone gave it a go. Riders please note, inappropriate language is not to be used whilst at pony club. It’s
one thing to have stern words to your horse to get them over a jump – it’s not acceptable to swear!
If you are heard using such language you will cease to ride for the rest of the rally, it doesn’t matter if its directed to your horse and especially not
directed to anyone.
Thanks once again to those volunteers who donated their time for the use of the grounds – and we look forward to it again next year – now that
more parents have been jump judges, we look forward to seeing a few different faces next year – and that includes our senior riders.
If anyone accidently took home a COLORED BIB - please bring it to the rally on Sunday - there are some missing!!!
West Gippsland Zone Update:
If you are Grade 3, 2 or 1 Dressage OR A B or C Grade Show Jumping and you place in our Zone Rankings then you stand a chance to represent
at State Level against other Zones, which Laura Travis did for last years State Event – Laura has a lovely badge to prove it too!
If you would like any more information on how to get started for these qualifying events then please ask me or even have a chat to Laura –I’m
sure she’d tell you how she got there!
There are currently lots of events being held in our zone that if you place you may qualify for our Zone Team at state level.
Our Zone is offering lots of Activities throughout the year and there are several that stand out to me like opportunities that are too good to miss
out!
The zone run events are at a low cost to our members (the $2.00 levy we pay when we hold events goes to fund these activities).
The highlights are as follows:
May:
Speed to Safety at Stoney Creek Race Racetrack – Saturday May 25 th and Saturady June 29 th
This event was a huge success last year. Entries are available and is a very fun day racing down the home straight of a real race course in jockey
silks!!! The finalists will compete in Melbourne against other zones!
Get your entries in now!!!
June:
Junior Hunt with the Melbourne Hunt Club at Walkerville. NO COST, just bring afternoon tea to share. Starts at 11am – ride for 2-3 hours then
July:
Clinic with Megan Jones at Arron Park, Clyde. July 1 & 2. Open to riders from Grade 1 – 4 there are two clinics but as to the popularity of this
event as it was a huge success last year if you miss out on the first clinic there will be a second in September. Cost is $220 per rider for a private
Dressage Lesson and a Group Show Jump Lesson – And So Close to Home for us!! Arron Park is an indoor arena so the event will proceed in ANY
weather
April Rally:
This Sundays rally format will be a DOUBLE Show Jumping session with your instructors.
The afternoon will see you have a session to have your final dress rehearsal. Then each group will present their Musical Ride to the panel of judges
and to finish the day we will have Mounted Presentations and prizes.
Please make sure you have your music and costumes ready on Sunday.
Music needs to be on an iPhone or iPod to play using the PA system.
Fingers crossed it doesn’t rain!
May Rally:
We will be having a visit from Lisa Coffey from Racing Victoria. Lisa will also be bringing along with her a Melbourne Cup winner – Sub Zero!
The morning you will participate in riding at your graded speed (ie: Grade 3 450 meters per minute) and the afternoon there will be guest speaker
and fun activities based on horse racing and jumps racing. If you have any questions please bring them along for Lisa.
Lisa also runs the Speed to Safety days – so if you want to know more details to help you perform on the day talk to Lisa at the May rally.
June Rally:
We will be having a trail ride away from our grounds.
At this stage we look like having it along the Warburton Rail Trail, which is very horse riding friendly and a lovely scenic ride. More details about
start points and finish points and lunch will be supplied.
If there are any riders wishing to be graded YOU MUST complete a Request to be graded form – copy attached to this newsletter and a copy on
the website.
For riders that have obtained certificates at the February rally – if you are needing to purchase the C Certificate Workbook I have a few left for
Sale – they are $15.00 each. You need to complete the workbook prior to the Riding part. The next round of C Certificates for the Zone will be in
August – so we have a few months to get moving on completing the books.
Look forward to seeing you all Sunday!
