Letter to <strong>the</strong> Editor<br />
Dear Editor;<br />
I was <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> article about <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Missouri</strong> Mules <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fall/W<strong>in</strong>ter edition <strong>of</strong><br />
Veter<strong>in</strong>ary Medical Review. The “<strong>Missouri</strong><br />
and <strong>the</strong> Mule” section was elucidat<strong>in</strong>g, and<br />
po<strong>in</strong>ted to <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> mules <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
history <strong>of</strong> our country.<br />
The article cited <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> mules <strong>in</strong> military<br />
service dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Civil War (where <strong>the</strong><br />
animal’s ability to pack heavy loads across<br />
rugged terra<strong>in</strong> was highly prized) and that<br />
mules were still be<strong>in</strong>g used <strong>in</strong> World War II<br />
<strong>in</strong> remote areas.<br />
Mules were <strong>the</strong> prime movers for <strong>the</strong> 10th<br />
Mounta<strong>in</strong> Division <strong>in</strong> World War II, carry<strong>in</strong>g<br />
weapons, supplies, oats—you name it. The<br />
10th used <strong>the</strong> 75-mm pack howitzer, which<br />
was broken down <strong>in</strong>to seven loads to be carried<br />
on <strong>the</strong> mules’ packsaddles—hence, <strong>the</strong><br />
name “Mule Pack Artillery.” The division<br />
tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Colorado mounta<strong>in</strong>s at 10,000<br />
feet and was based at Camp Hale. They saw<br />
combat <strong>in</strong> Italy <strong>in</strong> 1944-45.<br />
Of course, we relied on <strong>the</strong> mules as be<strong>in</strong>g<br />
strong and sure footed—though <strong>the</strong>y were<br />
not always compliant. A pack howitzer is<br />
used at MU football games to celebrate<br />
scores.<br />
Incidentally, my dad, Dr. Adrian J. Durant,<br />
was chair <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Veter<strong>in</strong>ary Science Department<br />
prior to its becom<strong>in</strong>g a college. I used<br />
to frequent Connaway Hall when I was a<br />
kid and my friend, Dr. John W. Connaway,<br />
used to write little anecdotes and short<br />
poems for me. After 65 years, I can still<br />
remember <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>def<strong>in</strong>able mystique that old<br />
build<strong>in</strong>g had for me.<br />
