MAURER SÖHNE<br />
<strong>Maurer</strong> <strong>Söhne</strong> GmbH & Co. KG counts one <strong>of</strong><br />
the leading producers <strong>of</strong> structural protection<br />
systems in the world. The family-owned<br />
company with its headquarters in Munich is<br />
the world market leader in manufacturing<br />
structural components that are subject to<br />
motion. <strong>Maurer</strong> <strong>Söhne</strong> develops and produces<br />
solutions for all aspects <strong>of</strong> accommodating<br />
forces and movements in structures,<br />
e.g., resulting from climatic effects or from<br />
variable loads. In addition to expansion<br />
joints, structural bearings, seismic devices<br />
and vibration absorbers, the product range<br />
in the three business areas Structural Protection<br />
Systems, Amusement Rides and Constructional<br />
Steelwork comprises, among<br />
others, roller coasters, steel bridges and steel<br />
stacks. Services such as consulting, training<br />
<strong>of</strong> external installation personnel as well as<br />
monitoring complete the portfolio. Among<br />
the customers there are consortia for construction<br />
projects, building authorities, and<br />
also leisure parks from all over the world.<br />
Continuous product research guarantees<br />
that new products are adapted to current<br />
general requirements. For example, <strong>Maurer</strong><br />
<strong>Söhne</strong> developed a solution for expansion<br />
joints with greatly reduced noise emission as<br />
well as durable bridge bearings which enjoy<br />
the same service life as the structure they<br />
support. In the Amusement Rides Division,<br />
for instance, processes for saving energy by<br />
means <strong>of</strong> regenerative braking were designed,<br />
and also a calculation methodology for<br />
complex track dynamics for the amusement<br />
rides were developed. Thanks to its sustainable<br />
and energy-efficient products, the<br />
company considers itself well-equipped for<br />
the future. For example, in complying with<br />
stricter building requirements in response to<br />
changing climatic conditions and a shortage<br />
<strong>of</strong> resources. <strong>Maurer</strong> <strong>Söhne</strong> was founded in<br />
the year 1876. The metal printer Friedrich<br />
<strong>Maurer</strong> established a workshop for metal<br />
goods and ornaments which in just a short<br />
<strong>Maurer</strong> <strong>Söhne</strong> holds a leading position worldwide when it comes to ensuring smooth interaction <strong>of</strong> forces<br />
and movements occurring in structures and is involved all around the world in developing and constructing<br />
complex large-scale projects, for instance the Millau Viaduct in the South <strong>of</strong> France.<br />

In 1931 Johannes Beutler took over the<br />
company, and since then it has been owned<br />
by the Beutler family. In the mid-1960s the<br />
product scope was expanded to include steel<br />
stacks and expansion joints, and in 1973 the<br />
business segment bridge bearings was added<br />
through the takeover <strong>of</strong> Kreutz KG Bridge<br />
Bearings. In 1999 two further production<br />
sites were set up in Torbali, Turkey, Bophal,<br />

market. Today, <strong>Maurer</strong> <strong>Söhne</strong> has<br />
subsidiaries in Great Britain, Austria, France<br />
and Russia, as well as a global network <strong>of</strong><br />

over 50 representative <strong>of</strong>fices. Sales in 2009<br />
amounted to 110 million Euros, with an export<br />
share <strong>of</strong> over 60 %.<br />
The XW 1 wave joint is the latest development<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>Maurer</strong> expansion joints. Expansion joints<br />
are used in the construction <strong>of</strong> bridges to prevent<br />
cracks occurring in the structure because<br />
<strong>of</strong> changes in length. As flexible elements between<br />
the bridge and the abutment on the one<br />
hand they prevent the structural components<br />
from being subject to movement constraints<br />
and thus damaged, and on the other hand they<br />
ensure that the road surface can be used safely.<br />
In addition to these central functions, the XW 1<br />
expansion joint displays a number <strong>of</strong> further advantages<br />
thanks to its sophisticated design. The<br />
joint’s gap is wave-shaped. As a result, the noise<br />
is considerably reduced when a vehicles passes<br />
over it. The distance between the turning points<br />
<strong>of</strong> the wave-shaped edge pr<strong>of</strong>iles has been selected<br />
such to ensure that one <strong>of</strong> the two tyres <strong>of</strong> an<br />
axle always rolls gently over the expansion joint<br />
at a slanting angle. There are no screwed joints which can get loose, and the uncovered<br />
joint gap is self-cleaning.<br />
