MAURER SÖHNE
The scope of products
of Maurer Söhne GmbH
& Co. KG is divided into
the three business areas
Structural Protection
Systems, Amusement
Rides and Structural
Steelwork. Amongst
others, the company was
involved in implementing
vibration absorption
for the Skypark of the
Marina Bay Sands Hotel
in Singapore (bottom).
MAURER SÖHNE
Maurer Söhne GmbH & Co. KG counts one of
the leading producers of structural protection
systems in the world. The family-owned
company with its headquarters in Munich is
the world market leader in manufacturing
structural components that are subject to
motion. Maurer Söhne develops and produces
solutions for all aspects of accommodating
forces and movements in structures,
e.g., resulting from climatic effects or from
variable loads. In addition to expansion
joints, structural bearings, seismic devices
and vibration absorbers, the product range
in the three business areas Structural Protection
Systems, Amusement Rides and Constructional
Steelwork comprises, among
others, roller coasters, steel bridges and steel
stacks. Services such as consulting, training
of external installation personnel as well as
monitoring complete the portfolio. Among
the customers there are consortia for construction
projects, building authorities, and
also leisure parks from all over the world.
Continuous product research guarantees
that new products are adapted to current
general requirements. For example, Maurer
Söhne developed a solution for expansion
joints with greatly reduced noise emission as
well as durable bridge bearings which enjoy
the same service life as the structure they
support. In the Amusement Rides Division,
for instance, processes for saving energy by
means of regenerative braking were designed,
and also a calculation methodology for
complex track dynamics for the amusement
rides were developed. Thanks to its sustainable
and energy-efficient products, the
company considers itself well-equipped for
the future. For example, in complying with
stricter building requirements in response to
changing climatic conditions and a shortage
of resources. Maurer Söhne was founded in
the year 1876. The metal printer Friedrich
Maurer established a workshop for metal
goods and ornaments which in just a short
Maurer Söhne holds a leading position worldwide when it comes to ensuring smooth interaction of forces
and movements occurring in structures and is involved all around the world in developing and constructing
complex large-scale projects, for instance the Millau Viaduct in the South of France.
time grew into a lightning conductor factory.
In 1931 Johannes Beutler took over the
company, and since then it has been owned
by the Beutler family. In the mid-1960s the
product scope was expanded to include steel
stacks and expansion joints, and in 1973 the
business segment bridge bearings was added
through the takeover of Kreutz KG Bridge
Bearings. In 1999 two further production
sites were set up in Torbali, Turkey, Bophal,
In the Amusement Rides business area Maurer
Söhne developed, amongst others, a calculation
methodology for complex track dynamics.
India, and Nanjing, China, to supply the international
market. Today, Maurer Söhne has
subsidiaries in Great Britain, Austria, France
and Russia, as well as a global network of
SIMPLY EXPLAINED: XW 1 MAURER WAVE EXPANSION JOINT
over 50 representative offices. Sales in 2009
amounted to 110 million Euros, with an export
share of over 60 %.
The XW 1 wave joint is the latest development
of Maurer expansion joints. Expansion joints
are used in the construction of bridges to prevent
cracks occurring in the structure because
of changes in length. As flexible elements between
the bridge and the abutment on the one
hand they prevent the structural components
from being subject to movement constraints
and thus damaged, and on the other hand they
ensure that the road surface can be used safely.
In addition to these central functions, the XW 1
expansion joint displays a number of further advantages
thanks to its sophisticated design. The
joint’s gap is wave-shaped. As a result, the noise
is considerably reduced when a vehicles passes
over it. The distance between the turning points
of the wave-shaped edge profiles has been selected
such to ensure that one of the two tyres of an
axle always rolls gently over the expansion joint
at a slanting angle. There are no screwed joints which can get loose, and the uncovered
joint gap is self-cleaning.
