IS GOD CALLING YOU TO TEACH CHURCH SCHOOL?
Have you ever thought that perhaps God has given you the gift of teaching? Have you wondered whether or
not this might be a gift you could share with others? Are you open to considering whether or not you are being
called to serve as a Church School teacher this fall without any pressure or expectation that you will teach?
Here is your opportunity to do just that. On Saturday, May 11, from 8:45-11:00 a.m. and Monday, May 13,
from 5:45-8:00 p.m. two identical discernment sessions will be offered to anyone interested in exploring this
possibility. A Curriculum Task Force of our Spiritual Formation Team will offer you a hands-on overview of
a new curriculum we will be using this fall in all of our Church School classes. After an extensive time of
study and prayer, our Spiritual Formation Team approved moving to a new curriculum that will connect each
Sunday’s class with that day’s scripture lesson and sermon in worship. This will help all participants to discern
better what God is seeking to say to them through each Sunday’s scripture lesson and how best to reflect
that message in their daily lives. Because all classes will be focused on the same lesson, this will also enable
further discussion to continue in families and with other friends in our church family. All current, former and
“never-before” Church School teachers are encouraged to participate in one of these two workshops. Simply
register by Sunday, May 5, with Caley Oels in the church office by email caley.oels@fpcallentown.org or
phone 610-395-3781, Ext. 11. After participating in one of the workshops, participants will be given a period
of time prayerfully to consider if God is calling them to teach in the fall before offering their decision to the
Spiritual Formation Team.
CONFIRMATION SUNDAY
Members of this year’s Confirmation Class who have chosen to make a public profession of faith in Jesus
Christ as their Lord and Savior, will be confirmed in worship on Sunday, May 12, at the 10:15 a.m. traditional
worship service and the 10:30 a.m. alternative worship service. A church-wide reception honoring this year’s
Confirmands will take place on the front lawn of the church following these worship services.
THE 10:10 WORSHIP BAND INVITES YOU TO PRAISEFEST 2013
"The 10:10 - Life To The Full" is what you'll see emblazoned on keyboard
player Phil Henderson's t-shirt pretty much every Sunday morning. It is
the driving thought and Scripture (John 10:10) behind the Alternative Service
at First Presbyterian.
One of the visions expressed to the 10:10 band by both Lead Pastor
Tony Sundermeier and Director of Alternative Worship Adam Tavolaro was to
take the joy and fullness of life expressed through worship at the Alternative
Service and begin to embrace the community with it outside of the church walls.
Enter PraiseFest 2013. The event, taking place in Laureldale, PA on Saturday May 11, is a collaborative
worship service. The 10:10 Band, in addition to Cross-Eyed Jake, The Westlawn United Methodist Church
Praise Band, and Rock Solid from Calvary United Methodist Church, Mohnton, will be playing a set of worship
tunes and a few originals.
The idea behind the PraiseFest 2013 is outlined in its slogan: "A day of music, food, fun and praising
God, getting the community together so that we can 'Help each other help others'". Event organizer, Jerry Geleff,
envisioned a venue where churches could put aside their differences and concentrate on working together,
pooling resources, and fostering Christian fellowship as the body of Christ continues to build the kingdom of
God.
PraiseFest 2013 is being hosted at the Rosedale Camp Grove Association building, located on 1616
Vine St, Laureldale, Pennsylvania 19605. The event will start at 4pm and continue until around 7:00pm. The
all-ages event is free for all, and the 10:10 Band would love to see you come support this wonderful gathering
of believers for Christ's glory!

Good News from Malawi!
The rainy season brought sufficient rain this year, there is no drought, and the harvest should be good. Praise
God! A special thank you to everyone who contributed to the 2012 Advent alternative gift of maize for hunger
relief due to last year’s severe drought in Malawi. Your gifts saved lives! The gifts of maize were given
through Villages in Partnership (VIP). Our VIP contact, Liz Heinzel-Nelson, recently returned from Malawi,
saying people thanked her and told her, “I would not be here today if I did not get the maize from VIP.”
Malawi – “See One, Do One, Teach One”
Did you know that if you scrape a goat’s hooves with a knife, it can keep the goat from becoming lame?
First Presbyterian Church of Allentown, PA (FPCA) members and friends generously gave Advent alternative
gifts of animals, including goats, to Naming’azi Farm in Malawi. The animals are given to the most vulnerable
people in the villages of Malawi, and the first offspring are given to other families in great need.
Recently, a team of veterinarians from New Jersey traveled to Malawi through Villages in Partnership and visited
Naming’azi Farm. The veterinarians asked a group of local farmers if their goats were lame. Most of the
farmers raised their hands. Using the theory: “See One, Do One, Teach One,” the veterinarians demonstrated a
procedure using a knife to care for the goats’ hooves to help prevent the goats from becoming lame. (“See
One”.) Next, the local farmers performed the procedure. (“Do One.”) Finally, the farmers went back to their
villages to show the method to another person. (“Teach One.”)
Now, thanks to the veterinary team making a 5-year commitment to Malawi, extra care will be given to the
animals, including those given in Christian love by FPCA.
First Presbyterian Church, Malawi and Honduras
In just the last year and a half, members and friends of First Presbyterian Church of Allentown (FPCA) have
given numerous gifts of chickens, goats, fish, wells and trees to help our brothers and sisters in Malawi.
Thanks to you, gifts were also given to buy bricks for schools and maize to feed the desperately hungry, plus
more than 50 Malawian children now have loving sponsors!
In response to God’s call to Malawi, and our congregation’s amazing support, FPCA’s International/
National (I/N) Mission Team plans to continue our relationship with Malawi. Due to the high cost of traveling
there, FPCA does not plan to have a mission trip to Malawi at this time. Since we can receive updates
through Villages in Partnership (VIP), a New Jersey based organization who is actively involved in Malawi,
the I/N team has decided we can best support our Malawi brothers and sisters through prayers, gifts and correspondence.
Seeking to provide the congregation with an affordable overseas mission opportunity, the I/N team is planning
a Living Water International mission trip to Honduras in 2014. Why Honduras? Pastor Tony Sundermeier has
seen first-hand the need in Honduras and will be traveling with a medical mission team to this Central American
country this year. The I/N team believes we are being called to meet our Honduran brothers and sisters
where they live…to walk alongside them…to dig a well together.
Please continue to pray for our brothers and sisters in Malawi even as we seek to meet those who live in
Honduras.
Water:
“At any given time, half of the world’s hospital beds are occupied by patients suffering from a water-related
disease. Unsafe drinking water, inadequate sanitation, and poor hygiene cause nearly 90 percent of all diseases
in the world, and claim the lives of 5,000 children under the age of five every day.” Living Water International
First Presbyterian Church will be working side-by-side with Living Water International in Honduras during
2014 to build a well and provide safe, clean water for our brothers and sisters. Watch for details about how you
can be a part of this mission, whether you travel to Honduras, or become part of the “home team!” Meanwhile,
please pray for all those who don’t have access to this most precious resource- clean water.

The Evolution of Adam
Evolutionary theory has been
around for generations, but in
recent years two factors are
bringing the issue back into the
public eye. … the relentless,
articulate, and popular attacks
on Christianity by the New
Atheists … and … wellpublicized
advances in our understanding
of evolution, particularly
genetics.” Those are
the introductory words of Dr.
Peter Enns book that seeks to
look at this topic from a scientific
and religious perspective.
Dr. Enns, professor of
biblical studies at Eastern University,
will join us for this
seminar thanks to our Scientists
in Congregations grant from the
Templeton Foundation. All
participants will receive a free
copy of his book, “The Evolution
of Adam.”
