<strong>Interim</strong> <strong>Director</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Ministry</strong><br />

<strong>First</strong> Presbyterian Church - Allentown, PA.<br />

1. REASON FOR POSITION<br />

<strong>First</strong> Presbyterian Church’s Associate Pastor with <strong>Youth</strong> and Young Adults will be on a<br />

sabbatical leave from June 29 – October 25, 2009. In order to keep our <strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Ministry</strong><br />

Program functioning and vital during this time period, an <strong>Interim</strong> <strong>Director</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Ministry</strong><br />

will be hired to assume most <strong>of</strong> the responsibilities <strong>of</strong> the Associate Pastor with <strong>Youth</strong> and<br />

Young Adults.<br />

If necessary, this position could be divided into two positions – an <strong>Interim</strong> <strong>Director</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Youth</strong><br />

<strong>Ministry</strong> (Summer) serving from May 19-August 12 and an <strong>Interim</strong> <strong>Director</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Youth</strong><br />

<strong>Ministry</strong> (Fall) serving from August 3-November 1.<br />

2. RESPONSIBILITIES<br />

The <strong>Interim</strong> <strong>Director</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Ministry</strong> will:<br />

a. Assume primary responsibility for the oversight and administration <strong>of</strong> all <strong>Youth</strong><br />

<strong>Ministry</strong> Programs during the interim period.<br />

b. Serve as the primary supervisor <strong>of</strong> four Summer Interns once the Associate Pastor<br />

with <strong>Youth</strong> and Young Adults begins his sabbatical leave. The <strong>Interim</strong> <strong>Director</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Ministry</strong> will share leadership responsibilities in the Summer Intern<br />

Orientation Program with the Associate Pastor with <strong>Youth</strong> and Young Adults and<br />

have primary responsibility for both mid-summer and end <strong>of</strong> summer evaluations <strong>of</strong><br />

the Summer Interns. The <strong>Interim</strong> <strong>Director</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Ministry</strong> will also be responsible<br />

for leading weekly staff meetings with the Summer Interns for ongoing evaluation<br />

and planning <strong>of</strong> the Summer <strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Ministry</strong> Program. The <strong>Interim</strong> <strong>Director</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Youth</strong><br />

<strong>Ministry</strong> will address and resolve any performance or other problems that arise with<br />

the Summer Interns while they are on staff.<br />

c. Attend and be the primary leader for all major Summer <strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Ministry</strong> Programs<br />

including, but not limited to, Jr. and Sr. High Workcamps, Jr. High Tubing Trip, Sr.<br />

High Beach Retreat and the End <strong>of</strong> Summer Celebration.<br />

d. Participate in several Summer <strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Ministry</strong> Programs each week. Specific<br />

programs and responsibilities will be negotiated in advance with the Summer Interns.<br />

e. Serve as the primary leader for the beginning <strong>of</strong> the 2009-2010 Confirmation Class.<br />

This will include conducting one-on-one Initial Conferences with Confirmands and<br />

their parents in August, Sunday morning class leadership beginning September 13,<br />

2009, primary leadership for the Fall Confirmation Class Retreat on September 18-<br />

20, 2009, and coordination <strong>of</strong> the work <strong>of</strong> the Confirmation Class Advisors.<br />

f. Assist the <strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Ministry</strong> Committee in recruiting, training and recognizing the<br />

volunteer leadership needed for all <strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Ministry</strong> Programs.<br />

g. Monitor all finances related to the <strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Ministry</strong> Program and be responsible for<br />

keeping these expenses within the budgeted amount. The church’s Financial<br />

Administrator will assist with this responsibility.


h. Serve as the church staff resource person to/for the Christian Education Committee<br />

(along with the <strong>Director</strong> <strong>of</strong> Children’s <strong>Ministry</strong> and <strong>Director</strong> <strong>of</strong> Adult Education<br />

<strong>Ministry</strong>) and the <strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Ministry</strong> Committee.<br />

i. Serve as an advocate for youth ministry to the church staff and, as appropriate, to the<br />

entire church family.<br />

j. At the invitation <strong>of</strong> the Pastoral Staff, participate periodically in Sunday morning<br />

worship leadership.<br />

k. Participate in the weekly meetings <strong>of</strong> the church staff and any meetings <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Youth</strong><br />

<strong>Ministry</strong> Committee and Christian Education Committee that take place during the<br />

period <strong>of</strong> employment unless unavailable due to <strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Ministry</strong> program conflicts.<br />

l. Report to and accept direction from the Pastoral Staff and, ultimately, the Session<br />

through its Staff Committee.<br />

m. Help transition the Associate Pastor with <strong>Youth</strong> and Young Adults back into the<br />

<strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Ministry</strong> program the week <strong>of</strong> October 25, 2009.<br />

n. Prepare by the final week <strong>of</strong> employment a written evaluation <strong>of</strong> the Summer<br />

Interns’ performance and the Summer <strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Ministry</strong> Program as well as a written<br />

compilation <strong>of</strong> the Summer Intern’s evaluation <strong>of</strong> the Summer <strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Ministry</strong><br />

Program and review it with the Associate Pastor with <strong>Youth</strong> and Young Adults.<br />

3. CHARACTERISTICS<br />

The <strong>Interim</strong> <strong>Director</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Ministry</strong> shall demonstrate:<br />

a. A deep personal faith and commitment to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and to his<br />

church.<br />

b. An understanding <strong>of</strong> and commitment to the Reformed Tradition and the<br />

Presbyterian Church (USA).<br />

c. A commitment to and love for all <strong>of</strong> God’s people with special interest for youth who<br />

have completed grades six through twelve.<br />

d. An ability to serve as a team player on a large church staff, particularly with the<br />

<strong>Director</strong> <strong>of</strong> Children’s <strong>Ministry</strong>, <strong>Director</strong> <strong>of</strong> Adult Education <strong>Ministry</strong>, and the <strong>Youth</strong><br />

<strong>Ministry</strong> Committee.<br />

4. QUALIFICATIONS<br />

The <strong>Interim</strong> <strong>Director</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Ministry</strong> shall possess the following qualifications:<br />

a. Preferably a Master <strong>of</strong> Divinity degree (ordination preferred, but not required) or<br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Arts degree in Christian Education.<br />

b. Full-time or part-time staff experience in the <strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Ministry</strong> Program <strong>of</strong> one or more<br />

churches.<br />

c. Familiarity with computer skills including Micros<strong>of</strong>t Word, Excel, and Publisher.<br />

5. TERMS OF SERVICE AND COMPENSATION<br />

a. The <strong>Interim</strong> <strong>Director</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Ministry</strong> will serve from May 19 – November 1, 2009.


. The <strong>Interim</strong> <strong>Director</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Ministry</strong> will be a 40-hour a week temporary<br />

employee <strong>of</strong> <strong>First</strong> Presbyterian Church, recognizing that the demands <strong>of</strong> ministry<br />

necessitate a flexible schedule. Daily hours will vary to meet program and informal<br />

gathering needs.<br />

c. The total stipend for this position is negotiable based on education and experience<br />

and will be paid in equal installments every other Friday.<br />

d. All job-related mileage (not commuting) will be compensated at $0.55 per mile, not<br />

to exceed a predetermined amount during the time <strong>of</strong> employment. Additionally,<br />

mileage will be reimbursed for one round trip from home or school to Allentown, not<br />

to exceed $350.<br />

e. Personal expenses incurred to carry out any <strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Ministry</strong> program will be<br />

reimbursed at cost, but cannot exceed a predetermined cumulative amount.<br />

f. The church will pay all costs incurred to participate in youth events (such as<br />

registration fees and meals).<br />

g. If required, room will be provided with a member(s) <strong>of</strong> the congregation at no<br />

cost to the <strong>Interim</strong> <strong>Director</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Ministry</strong>. The <strong>Interim</strong> <strong>Director</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Youth</strong><br />

<strong>Ministry</strong> will, however, be responsible for the cost <strong>of</strong> their food during the time <strong>of</strong><br />

employment. Specific arrangements will be negotiated between the <strong>Interim</strong><br />

<strong>Director</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Ministry</strong> and their host.<br />
