Elementary & Middle School Assignments
All students will read 6 books. Which books should my child
read?
Students entering First and Second Grades this fall should read 6
books which are on the Suggested Reading List or other books
designated for Beginning Readers.
Students entering Third Grade this fall should read books which fall
within their Lexile range. The Lexile range is a score found on the
Scholastic Reading Inventory report which was sent home with this
year’s second grade students. At least one book should be nonfiction.
Students entering Fourth through Eighth Grades this fall should
choose 6 books which fall within their Lexile Range as reported on
this year’s CRCT report which was sent home to parents. At least one
book should be nonfiction.
Summer Reading for kindergarten students is recommended, but not
required. No grades will be given to kindergarten students.
Assignment:
All students will keep a Reader’s Log of time spent reading 6 books
and have the log signed by a parent. The reading log will count as
two homework grades. A blank Reader’s Log is attached.
Sample Reading Log
Date Title of Book Pages Read Time Spent
Reading
6-30-11 Swimmy Pgs. 8-12 10 minutes
7-4-11 Miss Nelson Is Back Pgs. 1-10 55 minutes
7-10-11 Miss Nelson Is Back Pgs. 11-20 45 minutes

What is a Lexile?
A standard score that matches a student’s reading ability with
difficulty of text materials
Lexiles can range between approximately 200 and 2000.
A Lexile can be interpreted as the level of book that a
student can read with 75% comprehension.
Which book should my child read?
The target is a Lexile score range from 100L below to 50L above.
For example, if my second grader reads at 330L, he should pick a
book with a Lexile range of 230L-380L.
*Lexile is a registered trademark of Metametrics, Inc.
Where can I find this score?
On the Scholastic Reading Inventory (which was received from their
2nd grade teacher) for students entering third grade in the fall.
On the CRCT for students entering Grades 4-8. See example below.
More information on Lexiles can be found on the Metametrics Webpage:
www.Lexiles.com or
on the “Find-A-Book, Georgia” page of
the Georgia Department of Education: http:\\georgia.lexile.com

Just a Reminder!
There are many factors that affect the relationship between a reader and text, including content,
age-appropriateness, reader interests, suitability of the text, and text difficulty. The Lexile
measure of a book—a measure of text difficulty—is a good starting point in the book-selection
process, with other factors then being considered. The Lexile measure should never be the only
factor considered when selecting a book.
Parents, please help your child choose appropriate reading this summer.
