zyx-CRUX.JUL.11 30/6/11 10:20 am Page 8 8 July 2011 MediaCityUK : Tell HAYLEY MATTHEWS REPORTS ON PROGRESS TO MARK the BBC’s move to MediaCityUK in June, Radio 4’s Sunday Worship swapped its traditional church setting for the BBC Philharmonic’s new studio at Salford Quays. The service was led by MediaCityUK Chaplain, Hayley Matthews. Bishop Chris preached and the music was provided by the Manchester Chamber Choir and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. Hayley reflects on the radio broadcast, her first nine months in post and her hopes for future ministry. LEADING BBC Radio 4’s Sunday Worship was the culmination of a number of childhood dreams for me. Being invited to script (I always wanted to be a writer) and present (and a DJ) the live worship from MediaCityUK was really only the beginning of a much more extensive journey. The Anchor, the chaplaincy based onsite, is becoming part of the DNA of MediaCityUK, due to both the foresight of Manchester Diocese in ensuring we were here right from the start, and - dare I say it - due to the persistent nature of a certain pioneering priest! There have been many doors to knock, obstacles to overcome and there are still significant challenges ahead, but The Anchor has already made its mark in the Fresh Expressions stable, on both BBC Radio Manchester and BBC Radio 4, and in Salford deanery, local schools and community groups. When BBC Radio 2 recorded ‘A Day in the Life of the MediaCityUK Chaplain’, I invited the women’s group to participate so that real Salfordian voices can be heard nationwide. I think it’s really important that, as part of the diocesan Communications Department, I not only broker conversations and ideas between various parties, but also enable them to be heard in ways that might not normally happen. After all, as Christians we follow a Lord who empowered others to speak and think for themselves. This important strand of liberation theology is a significant aspect of the gospel for people who have only experienced difficult socio-economic c c c l a t c M b t i m F

Working with the BBC and peripheral media companies, such as lighting and rigging teams or location caterers and MediaCityUK support staff, is a growing part of my ministry here. As people begin to move onsite, the monthly Big Business Breakfast connects people socially and professionally. I am looking forward to Salford Universities Media Department moving here in September, and building on the fruitful work with the chaplaincy team headed by Duncan Myers. Other seedlings that are currently being nurtured include lunchtime lectures, leading worship, social media, collaborating with the Insight Faith Film Festival, the MediaCityUK Gospel Choir, being Chaplain to the National Church and Media Conference and, of course, providing daily prayer, weekly Eucharists and monthly multi-faith dialogue groups. With so much planting and growing going on, there is much to be done and I am looking forward to local parishioners, students and staff from onsite coming to join the chaplaincy as pastoral, communications and social volunteers as the work develops. Finally, just in case you thought I was erring on the side of caution in my new initiatives, do sponsor me on my Zip-Wire 844ft across the Manchester Ship Canal on July 17 at around 11.30am. I will jump from 95ft at the top of the International War Museum Tower and zip towards The Lowry to raise funds for the community projects The Anchor is proud to provide without excluding those unable to afford subscriptions or resources.
