• The high quality of day school education remains the determining factor for many parents in deciding between day schools and public or private schools. PEJE and other national and local initiatives (like Boston’s paradigm-changing $45 million Peerless Excellence project) can provide ideas to raise the bar on excellence, attract more full-pay students, fill unused classroom space, and engage more parents with the capacity to add resources to the effort to strengthen day school education. All this creates a “virtuous cycle” that will increase funds available for scholarship assistance while continuing to increase quality. Despite our challenges, this is a time of great potential for the day school world and Jews everywhere. A serious expansion of day schools—like all of the efforts explored above—will best occur if we work together with a collaborative vision for Jewish learning. The late political scientist Aaron Wildavsky reminds us of the preciousness of the gift we are entrusted with passing on, a message that speaks to us as we stand together in this moment of great sweeping change. “Without memory there is no learning; without learning there can be no teaching; and without teaching no one else will be able to remember,” he wrote. “This social circle of remembrance is God’s gift to Israel, without which its people would long since have perished.” Barry Shrage is President of Combined Jewish Philanthropies in Boston.
