Sports & Activities Ski Trip 2008 On Easter Friday 40 pupils and five teachers set off from Chantry High School in search of snow and fun in the world renowned resort of Schladming, Austria. After a very long journey we arrived to be greeted by excellent ski and snowboarding conditions. This enabled us to have a greater choice of ski runs and meant we were able to ski into the restaurant for lunch. Sports Relief 3 Mile Run On Sunday 16 March the P.E Department along with Chloe Elmer and Alex Archer took part in the Sport Relief run. It was a really wet and rainy day but the atmosphere at Portman Road was inspiring. Alex completed the six mile run, while Mr Rea and Mr Greenwood completed the three mile run in approximately 20 minutes. Miss Goddard, Miss Bailey and Chloe completed the run in approximately 28 minutes. In all, the runners raised over £150.00 for Sports Relief. Thanks to all who sponsored us! Miss Goddard With many of our pupils on their second week of skiing or snowboarding it was fantastic to see the amazing progress that everybody made. Pupils were kept busy in the evenings with a range of activities including; bowling, swimming, a quiz night and bingo. We also had the opportunity to watch a ski show, where a number of top class skiers showed off their skills and tricks. It was a very enjoyable week. All pupils should feel proud of the progress they made and the support and encouragement they showed each other. The week was fun packed and filled with laughter-roll on ski trip 2009! Coming soon-SKI TRIP 2009 launch!! Miss Bailey Congratulations! This year the year 10 netball team finished top of their league and have gained promotion into the A league for next season. They performed consistently well throughout the season and fully deserve their success. Gymnastics display at Castle Hill Infant School Six pupils from Year 7 worked very hard last <strong>term</strong> to create a gymnastics display to show to pupils from Castle Hill Infant School. Jenna Milne, Jade Carter, Jodie Glen, Morgan Studd, Amy Taylor and Shannon Giles created a routine consisting of complex gymnastics moves, cheerleading and acrobatics. The display went extremely well, with pupils from Castle Hill attempting some of the moves the Gymnasts had shown them, as well as asking the gymnasts how they became involved in the sport. Well done to all of you involved, it was a very beneficial afternoon! U13 ‘B’ Netball Tournament On Thursday 13 March, we hosted our first regional Netball tournament. Eight schools from the local area attended the tournament. It was a highly enjoyable afternoon with a good standard of netball demonstrated by everyone. Even when the rain came down at about four o clock, all the teams played on. A special thanks must go to a large number of older girls who gave up their time to help out with the tournament. They did a fantastic job and our visiting teachers commented on how helpful and polite they all were. Well done! Final Results 1st Deben 2nd Farlingaye 3rd Thurleston 4th Holbrook 5th Chantry 6th Stoke by Nayland 7th East Bergolt 8th St. Jo’s 9th Claydon Miss Bailey Wheelchair Basketball On Wednesday 7 June the PE department ran a Gifted and Talented wheelchair basketball session for 17 pupils. Paul Oxford a basketball coach from Iceni warriors lead the two hour session. Pupils had the opportunity to practice using the chairs, shooting and passing. The pupils then played 3v3 games putting into practice some of the skills they had learnt. The game is played on a full sized court with the same height baskets, so pupils discovered that they required more power when shooting. Wheeling the anti-tip chairs up and down the court was physically demanding and required pupils to adapt their spatial awareness skills to the new setting. It was a very enjoyable session and a fantastic opportunity to have an insight into disabled sport. Thank you to Paul Oxford for his time and expertise. Miss Bailey Trampolining Competition On Wednesday 12 March three girls from year 8 represented the school in the district Trampolining competition at Holywells High School, they were Sarah Dye, Emma Turpin and Shenice Hendry. All girls had to perform a ‘set’ routine followed by a ‘voluntary’ routine. They faced some tough opposition with a total of 32 pupils competing in their age group. The girls performed exceptionally well with Sarah finishing eighth, Emma Turpin finishing fourteenth and Shenice Hendry finishing twenty-sixth. The girls had an enjoyable afternoon competing in the competition. Miss Bailey Duke of Edinburgh Update As the picture shows the duke of Edinburgh group have been busy preparing for their expedition weekends. They will have to plan their walking routes, learn about first aid and be able to cook their own food! Along with the expedition pupils have had to spend considerable time working on; learning a skill, volunteering for a service and working on their fitness by participating in a physical recreation. Pupils will undertake a short practice walk after school. They will then go on a practice expedition, which must involve an overnight stay under canvass. They will have to carry all of their own equipment and cook dinner and breakfast for themselves. Hopefully the weather will be kind for the final assessment expedition in June!
