Strength
SWOT
‣ Globally competitive due to lower manufacturing cost and ability to meet stringent International
Quality Standards.
‣ Strong Presence in Oil and Gas Sector for Seamless Pipes.
‣ 50-50 JV with Tenaris for Upstream Premium Threading Connections.
‣ Major Domestic Customers includes Cash Rich Public Sector Undertakings of Oil & Gas Sector.
‣ Ability to produce Seamless Pipes for Tubing & Casing beyond 9-5/8” to 14” OD.
‣ One of the few Indian manufacturer of ERW Pipes beyond 16” to 20” OD Pipe, a competitive product
over SAW Pipes in that range (for Cross Country Line Pipe Application).
‣ Cash Rich & Debt Free.
‣ MSL casings are well accepted in USA market as “MAHA” Brand and is also having a Global presence
in various countries of the world ranging across Middle East and Far East.
‣ Limited number of Manufacturers Internationally for higher OD Seamless Pipes.
‣ Presently enjoying “AA+” Rating from CRISIL & ICRA.
22

SWOT CONTD….
Weakness
‣ Limited capacity to cater for Bearing / Auto industries.
‣ Limited Capital investment in Oil & Gas Sector.
Opportunities
‣ Massive domestic investment plans in Oil, Gas, Power & Steel sectors.
‣ Anti Dumping on Chinese pipes in EU, USA, Canada, Mexico & Brazil.
Threat
‣ Dumping of pipes & tubes from China.
23

MARKET BACKGROUND & CURRENT OUTLOOK
‣ Demand for Seamless Pipes & Tubes from E & P activities continues to be
affected due to dumping competition from Chinese Manufacturers.
‣ USA, Europe, Brazil, Colombia & Canada have imposed anti-dumping
duties on Chinese pipes, which has created a favorable position for Indian
manufacturers in these countries.
‣ 12th five year plan proposes to add 1,00,000 M.W power capacity. This
would have positive effect on demand of Steel Pipes & Tubes. Power
projects are however, currently going slow.
‣ Most of the oil pipeline networks in Mumbai High, Assam & Tripura are old
and under replacement. These replacements would boost demand for both
Seamless and Welded pipes.
‣ Pan India pipe line connectivity for gas is being given importance by the
Government. This will also have a positive impact on the requirement of
both Seamless and ERW pipes.
24

FUTURE PLANS OF MSL
‣ Focusing on Niche products within Pipe business viz. Higher Dia ERW,
Seamless, Coated Line Pipes, Drill Pipes & 13 Chrome Pipe.
‣ To fully exploit the export potential of SEAMLESS & ERW Pipes.
‣ To set up / to acquire a Backward Integrated Plant for making Steel Round
Billets.
‣ 16” Seamless pipe Green Field project to be setup near port for exports with an
investment of Rs 1000 Crore (approx.). Proposed capacity of 0.60 million tonnes.
Project work to commence in 2014-15.
25

Sustaining Success: Key Points
1. Innovation
2. Strong Financial Discipline
3. Cost competitive manufacturer
4. Right move at an early stage of cycle
5. Constant Creation/Addition of Value
6. Valued Customer Base / Relationships
7. Ability to contain both Capital and Operating Cost
