We recognize that citizenship is an ongoing process. We have further developed our Global Citizenship and Policy function and our long-term strategy. This chapter builds on progress shared in our previous reports and provides updates on how we are working to integrate our values and citizenship into all aspects of how we conduct business, from ethics and compliance and social investing to product quality and safety, and relationships with suppliers. Organization and Accountability Abbott’s Global Citizenship and Policy function resides within the Investor Relations and Public Affairs organization and is led by a divisional vice president who reports to a corporate officer. The mission of Global Citizenship and Policy is to position Abbott as a thought leader in the field of citizenship among the world’s FORTUNE 500 companies. The function is responsible for developing and driving our citizenship strategy, working with others to develop policies on key issues, implementing programs, and promoting dialogue with stakeholders. Chairman and CEO Executive Vice President, Finance and Chief Financial Officer Corporate Vice President, Investor Relations and Public Affairs Divisional Vice President, Global Citizenship and Policy Key Issues Through a series of discussions with our internal and external stakeholders in 2003, we identified the following issues that are most important to Abbott: access to medicines; research and innovation; intellectual property rights; corporate governance and business ethics; diversity and human development in the workplace; environment, health and safety; and social investing. Examples of our stakeholder engagement in these areas are featured throughout this report. Developing a Strategy The strategy for global citizenship at Abbott has three phases, as shown in the diagram below. In 2003, our efforts were focused on implementing Phase I. Phase I: ✔ Define citizenship at Abbott. ✔ Identify key issues and develop positions informed by stakeholder perspectives. ✔ Establish a Global Citizenship Working Group and build a cross-functional strategy. ✔ Expand current citizenship programs. ✔ Participate in global initiatives with other thought leaders. Phase II: • Operationalize values within business decisions and practices. • Develop and implement citizenship metrics across the company. • Improve performance. • Capture lessons learned from programs, initiatives and stakeholder engagement. Phase III: • Apply citizenship philosophy and values consistently in business decisions. • Engage with stakeholders routinely. • Share and promote new best practices internally and externally. • Contribute to the field of global citizenship. integration seven
