Dear Friends, Letter from the Principal The tremendous help and cooperation received from our many dedicated teachers, parents, students, friends and alumni have contributed significantly to the continued success of Bishop Watterson High School during this past school year. We look forward to even greater accomplishments in the future. More than 98% of the graduating Class of 2009, our most recent alums, is attending college, and over 65% of them earned scholarships based on merit, not financial need. They received over $11.2 million in scholarships – this does not include any grants. This class also amassed more than 28,155 hours of service to those in need, making our community a better place. This does not include the hours given through our Sophomore Service Training Program. Congratulations, Class of 2009! We are very excited about our new South Addition. The walls are up, the rooms are roughed out, the gym has been painted and the hoops have been installed. I invite you to come over for a hard hat tour of this work in progress. I would love to take you around! Construction is scheduled to be complete by the fall so we can begin using this space during the upcoming school year. Mark your calendar for Sunday, September 13 th ! We will be opening the time capsule that was in the cornerstone of the former convent, blessing our new cornerstone and having our final walk through. We hope you will be able to join us for the blessing at 2:30 p.m. or just come and tour our new addition between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Hope to see you there! We continually give thanks for you and for all the support you so generously give to Bishop Watterson High School. May God continue to bless you and your families throughout the year. Endowment Council Hosts Spring Event A warm spring evening was the backdrop for the first gathering of the Bishop Watterson Financial Advisors Network. Endowment Council Chair John Stock, a local attorney and parent of four, was our host for the casual event held at the Columbus Brewing Company. Attendees included local professionals in the banking, insurance, financial planning, accounting and legal fields. Scott Hartman, Director of Development at the Catholic Foundation, came to answer questions about the various endowment options available to BWHS donors. “In meeting with our Endowment Council, all agreed that the biggest impact to the Bishop Watterson Planned Giving program will come from heightening awareness of the opportunities available to leave a lasting legacy to future BWHS students,” John observed. “With this event, we began the process of networking with financial professionals, including those in banking, accounting, financial planning, and law, to provide information about the planned giving opportunities available to help Bishop Watterson.” In partnership with the Catholic Foundation, BWHS offers many planned giving opportunities including bequests, beneficiary designation of an IRA, 401(k) or life insurance policy, charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts, charitable gift annuities, and gifts of appreciated assets. Those donors who demonstrate a commitment to the future of our school with a gift to our planned giving program will become members of the Pope John Paul II Legacy Society, entitling them to unique honorary gifts, invitations to exclusive recognition events, and special appreciation at the Heritage Day Mass and luncheon held in the fall each year. Please send emails to bwalumni@cdeducation.org Scott Hartman, Catholic Foundation Director of Development Fr. Tony Ricard recently brought a touch of New Orleans to Bishop Watterson High School. A nationally known speaker and pastor of Our Lady Star of the Sea in New Orleans, Fr. Ricard challenged students to remember that they were created in God’s image and to live their faith by serving others. The senior leadership team invited Fr. Ricard to Bishop Watterson after hearing his keynote address during the National Catholic Youth Conference which was held in Columbus in 2007. Senior leader Molly Vlahakis said, “Father Tony has a special talent of opening teenagers’ eyes to all the possibilities of our faith. He is able to connect this message of God’s love for us to a more current viewpoint of life. A Touch of New Orleans NCYC and here at Watterson was a blessing. He has a way to make you laugh. He just has a carefree way of getting you to feel comfortable. His method is different than a Sunday sermon, but his message is still true and heartfelt.” Fr. Ricard shared with students the ongoing struggle of his parish and parish community to recover after Hurricane Katrina. He stressed how important it has been for Our Lady Star of the Sea to call people who lived in the neighborhood back to the community. There have been many struggles, Fr. Ricard said, as they have worked to rebuild their parish, their community and their lives. Bishop Watterson students are raising funds to benefit the parish in their recovery.
