Boerger’s class honored the nursing<br />
staff <strong>at</strong> <strong>Reading</strong> <strong>Hospital</strong> by cre<strong>at</strong>ing<br />
and delivering handmade notes of<br />
appreci<strong>at</strong>ion. <strong>Wyomissing</strong> Hills<br />
principal Ashley Smith credited art<br />
teacher Rob Kucharczuk with assisting<br />
the students during their art<br />
classes.<br />
Several nurses g<strong>at</strong>hered over their<br />
lunch break with the Director of<br />
<strong>Nursing</strong> to receive the notes and<br />
were so overwhelmed with the<br />
thoughtfulness and cre<strong>at</strong>ivity of the<br />
students th<strong>at</strong> even as the students<br />
departed, they continued sharing<br />
the notes among themselves r<strong>at</strong>her<br />
than going to lunch. Wendie<br />

hospital said some of the cards will<br />
be posted in the cafeteria hallway<br />
so all staff can enjoy them. The rest<br />
will be shared with each of the<br />

the intent of having staff post them<br />

• Forty <strong>Wyomissing</strong> students in<br />
grades 7-12 formed teams of five<br />
to compete in the wildly popular,<br />
first-ever n<strong>at</strong>ional cyber-security<br />
Toaster Wars competition<br />
(www.picoctf.com) sponsored by<br />
Carnegie Mellon University and<br />
the N<strong>at</strong>ional Security Agency.<br />
<strong>Wyomissing</strong>’s eight teams competed<br />
against more than 1,900<br />
teams n<strong>at</strong>ionwide. <strong>Wyomissing</strong><br />
Area’s top team of Alan Lu, Gavin<br />
Babb, Alex Shields, Paul Gehret,<br />
and Zachary Miller finished in<br />
314th place. The team of 7th<br />
graders (Sam Botterbusch,<br />
M<strong>at</strong>thew Driben, Andrew Zhou,<br />
Joe Cullen, and Jack Ambarian)<br />
did phenomenally well be<strong>at</strong>ing<br />
three of Wyo’s teams of upperclass<br />
computer science students<br />
and finishing in the top 600<br />
n<strong>at</strong>ionally! The N<strong>at</strong>ional<br />
Security Agency promoted the<br />
contest because of the country’s<br />
dire need to recruit cyber-security<br />
experts as it defends itself<br />
against constant <strong>at</strong>tacks from terrorists,<br />
criminals, and China.<br />
Most of the students were<br />
addicted to solving the online<br />
challenges and can’t wait for the<br />
contest next year.<br />

Cush traveled to the University<br />
of Pennsylvania on April 19, for<br />
its annual Women in Computer<br />
Science Day. They learned about<br />
career and college opportunities<br />
in fields such as robotics, digital<br />
media, and real-time and embedded<br />
computer systems such as<br />
pacemakers.

Carnival Tests M<strong>at</strong>h Skills<br />
Children were seen playing on the<br />
West <strong>Reading</strong> Playground on the last<br />
day of May, but it was far from a typical<br />
day on the playground. In fact, the students<br />
were working hard, putting their<br />
m<strong>at</strong>h skills to the test. It was the 2nd<br />

ELEMENTARY CENTERG<br />
annual M<strong>at</strong>h Carnival for the fifth<br />
graders <strong>at</strong> West <strong>Reading</strong> Elementary<br />
Center. Keith Arnold and Erika Homan,<br />
fifth grade m<strong>at</strong>h teachers <strong>at</strong> WREC,<br />
worked collectively with a parent committee<br />
since November to bring the<br />
carnival to life. There were 15 m<strong>at</strong>h<br />
games for the children to play. Each<br />
st<strong>at</strong>ion was run by <strong>at</strong> least one parent<br />
and involved key m<strong>at</strong>h skills the students<br />
learned throughout the year.<br />
At any given moment throughout the<br />
day, children were seen picking up fuzzy<br />
dice with rulers to review multiplic<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
properties, converting fractions<br />
with markers taped to a visor on their<br />
head, or carefully moving ping pong<br />
balls to the correct place value. Even a<br />
faint clicking of the probability wheel<br />
could be heard in the distance with a<br />
jump for joy when a coupon was won to<br />
a local kid-friendly establishment. “We<br />
have to thank the parents, the community,<br />
and our staff for embracing the<br />
idea!” both teachers agree. The found<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
for the carnival was set last year by<br />
Carla D’Addesi, who cre<strong>at</strong>ed most of the<br />
games th<strong>at</strong> were used. P<strong>at</strong>ricia Amin,<br />
N<strong>at</strong>alya Spadafora, and Jody Menon<br />
went above and beyond to add their<br />
own flair to the carnival this year. “The<br />
students worked hard all year to master<br />
the 5th grade curriculum. The Carnival<br />
is a fun way to test their knowledge!”<br />
agreed the teachers. Serafina France-<br />
Tribe had a message for the future 5th<br />
graders, “You definitely want to do<br />
m<strong>at</strong>h carnival. It is a lot of fun!”<br />

Stepping Back in Time: Fourth Grade Visits<br />
Colonial Days<br />
“Say cheese!” The way to capture<br />
images in the colonial days was not<br />
with photography, according to<br />
fourth grade teacher Colleen<br />
Paulson. Wealthy colonists would<br />
sit for hours and have their portraits<br />
painted. Others who could<br />
not afford this had to settle with<br />
having their silhouettes made.<br />

For three days in April, fourth<br />
grade students had a glimpse of<br />
wh<strong>at</strong> life was like in colonial days.<br />
Particip<strong>at</strong>ing in six different st<strong>at</strong>ions,<br />
students made silhouettes<br />
and cornbread, practiced calligraphy<br />
writing, colonial dancing, and<br />
weaving, played games, and experienced<br />
a one-room schoolhouse.<br />
Gwen Gibson’s students were surprised<br />
to learn th<strong>at</strong> meal time in<br />
colonial days was much different<br />
than today. Colonial children<br />
often had to stand for the entire<br />
meal and weren’t allowed to talk!<br />
Meals were very simple and consisted<br />
of a lot of corn. Most of the<br />
time colonists <strong>at</strong>e with their fingers<br />
r<strong>at</strong>her than utensils.<br />
Jahir Alba and Lukas Terefenko dressed as<br />
colonists while particip<strong>at</strong>ing in the activities.<br />
Emerson Gagnon enjoys cornbread, a<br />
staple of colonial meals.<br />
According to teacher Nancylee<br />
Chaiko, “The fourth graders were<br />
surprised to learn th<strong>at</strong> the professional<br />
weavers were men! Both the<br />
boys and girls were very proud of<br />
the bookmarks th<strong>at</strong> they wove!”<br />

Botvin and Lydia Botterbusch<br />
practice their weaving skills.<br />
Andrea Boerger said, “The highlight<br />
for me as a teacher was w<strong>at</strong>ching<br />
the excitement on the children’s<br />
faces as they were learning<br />
about colonial times. The costumes<br />
and activities really transported<br />
them back in time, and it made<br />
colonial life and struggles come<br />
alive. The kids really loved it!”<br />

Canadian Artifacts Travel to WREC<br />
Sixth graders studying Canada in<br />
Andrea Bensusan’s class were able to<br />
get some hands-on experience with<br />
Canadian artifacts when the “Canada<br />
Valise” arrived for a four-week stay <strong>at</strong><br />
West <strong>Reading</strong> Elementary Center. The<br />
valise is a suitcase full of teaching<br />

resources from Canada provided by the<br />
University of Maine’s Canadian-<br />
American Center. Assembled by Les<br />
Buell, a retired Rochester, NY area<br />
teacher, who spent many years integr<strong>at</strong>ing<br />
Canada in teaching American history,<br />
it travels to schools around the<br />
country. Items in the valise include a<br />
Hudson Bay Company Point Blanket<br />
co<strong>at</strong>, a Royal Canadian Mounted<br />
Police jacket and arm p<strong>at</strong>ch, a real<br />
beaver pelt, two license pl<strong>at</strong>es from<br />
Prince Edward Island, a tin Province<br />
cookie cutter, Canadian coins, the<br />
Canadian n<strong>at</strong>ional flag, a Hudson Bay<br />
Company flag, and tabletop flags of<br />
each province and territory.<br />

Wyo Area Music<br />
Student Represents PA<br />
<strong>Wyomissing</strong> Area Senior Dylan Bynon was<br />
recognized <strong>at</strong> the May 28, 2013 Board<br />
meeting for being selected to represent<br />
Pennsylvania in the Sound of America <strong>Honor</strong> Band. The<br />
Sound of America, Inc. is a music program designed to<br />
enrich aspiring musicians through intern<strong>at</strong>ional performance<br />
and educ<strong>at</strong>ion. The concert band and chorus is comprised<br />
of talented high school and college instrumentalists<br />
and vocalists from across the United St<strong>at</strong>es. <strong>Students</strong> are<br />
chosen through musical audition and recommend<strong>at</strong>ions for<br />
the annual SOA European Concert Tour. This year marks<br />
the 37th annual tour. The students represent America in a<br />
highly positive manner while performing before large<br />
European audiences in many of the most unique and finest<br />
concert halls in Europe in Austria, Switzerland, Italy,<br />
Germany, Luxembourg, and France on a three-week tour.<br />
Bynon, a flute and piccolo player, particip<strong>at</strong>ed in Concert<br />
Band, Marching Band, Orchestra, Pit Orchestra and Jazz<br />
Band. He co-founded the <strong>Wyomissing</strong> Philharmonic, a student-run<br />
organiz<strong>at</strong>ion th<strong>at</strong> meets after school. Bynon will<br />
<strong>at</strong>tend George Mason University in the fall majoring in<br />
music educ<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

Wyo 5 Live Club Seeks Needed Upgrades<br />
Wyo 5 Live, founded in November of 1997, is a club th<strong>at</strong><br />
provides the <strong>Wyomissing</strong> Area Junior-Senior High School<br />
with closed circuit television announcements. The Wyo 5<br />
Live Club affords students an opportunity to announce<br />
and produce daily live broadcasts to the entire JSHS. In<br />
addition to cre<strong>at</strong>ing a live broadcast experience, Wyo 5<br />
Live regularly airs supplemental video produced by<br />
Multimedia I, II, and III students.<br />
Hundreds of <strong>Wyomissing</strong> Area JSHS students have<br />
received hands-on public speaking, technical and production<br />
experience, and dozens have moved forward with<br />
professional careers in the broadcasting industry.<br />
Replacing aging hardware and upgrading the video signal<br />
by cre<strong>at</strong>ing a web-based broadcast is essential. Plans<br />
include purchasing two new high definition cameras and a<br />
video switcher th<strong>at</strong> would enable the broadcast signal to<br />
stream high definition video to the students. This upgrade<br />
gives students a relevant broadcast experience.<br />

The Gertrude K. McGonigle Adult Scholarship<br />
This is a $1,000 scholarship provided to an<br />
adult who is <strong>at</strong> least 24 years old and is<br />
re-entering educ<strong>at</strong>ion after <strong>at</strong> least a one-year<br />
lapse in time. This includes GED, voc<strong>at</strong>ional,<br />
baccalaure<strong>at</strong>e, and masters programs.<br />
