• Senior Audrey Ann Blakely won<br />

the 2013 NCWIT N<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

Runner-Up and the 2013<br />

Philadelphia Area Affili<strong>at</strong>e<br />

awards (ww2.ncwit.org/award).<br />

Junior Caroline P<strong>at</strong>tillo won the<br />

2013 Philadelphia Area<br />

Affili<strong>at</strong>e Runner-Up award. The<br />

competition recognizes young<br />

women <strong>at</strong> the high-school level<br />

for their computing-rel<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

achievements and interests.<br />

Both girls were honored with<br />

about 10 other award winners <strong>at</strong><br />

a dinner reception <strong>at</strong> Villanova<br />

University on April 3.<br />

• Seniors Kosho Hoshitsuki, Scott<br />

Goldberg, Dakota Lash, and<br />

Chris Geissler competed in the<br />

Future of Computing Contest<br />

(https://sites.google. com/a/temple.edu/fc2013)<br />

<strong>at</strong> Temple<br />

University on April 13. They<br />

won third place and $250 in the<br />

high school division with an<br />

Android mobile app named<br />

“Project Pl<strong>at</strong>oon Fight” th<strong>at</strong> can<br />

be used as a framework for other<br />

developers to build custom<br />

games. All four students are<br />

planning to major in computerrel<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

fields in college next<br />

year.<br />

• Ninth graders Jocelyn Dialectos<br />

and Rohan Rai and sophomore<br />

Dylan Thomas competed in the<br />

<strong>Reading</strong>-Berks Science and<br />

Engineering Fair (www.rbsef.org)<br />

<strong>at</strong> Albright College Fair on<br />

March 12. Jocelyn won second<br />

place in the “Zoology” division<br />

with “The Effects of Mimicry on<br />

Color of Prey,” Dylan Thomas<br />

won second place in the<br />

“M<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics and Computing”<br />

division with “Prime Number<br />

Computing Solutions.”<br />

• Forty <strong>Wyomissing</strong> students in<br />

grades 7-12 formed teams of five<br />

to compete in the wildly popular,<br />

first-ever n<strong>at</strong>ional cyber-security<br />

Toaster Wars competition<br />

(www.picoctf.com) sponsored by<br />

Carnegie Mellon University and<br />

the N<strong>at</strong>ional Security Agency.<br />

<strong>Wyomissing</strong>’s eight teams competed<br />

against more than 1,900<br />

teams n<strong>at</strong>ionwide. <strong>Wyomissing</strong><br />

Area’s top team of Alan Lu, Gavin<br />

Babb, Alex Shields, Paul Gehret,<br />

and Zachary Miller finished in<br />

314th place. The team of 7th<br />

graders (Sam Botterbusch,<br />

M<strong>at</strong>thew Driben, Andrew Zhou,<br />

Joe Cullen, and Jack Ambarian)<br />

did phenomenally well be<strong>at</strong>ing<br />

three of Wyo’s teams of upperclass<br />

computer science students<br />

and finishing in the top 600<br />

n<strong>at</strong>ionally! The N<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

Security Agency promoted the<br />

contest because of the country’s<br />

dire need to recruit cyber-security<br />

experts as it defends itself<br />

against constant <strong>at</strong>tacks from terrorists,<br />

criminals, and China.<br />

Most of the students were<br />

addicted to solving the online<br />

challenges and can’t wait for the<br />

contest next year.<br />

• Junior Caroline P<strong>at</strong>tillo and sophomores<br />

Abby Waxler and K<strong>at</strong>ie<br />

Cush traveled to the University<br />

of Pennsylvania on April 19, for<br />

its annual Women in Computer<br />

Science Day. They learned about<br />

career and college opportunities<br />

in fields such as robotics, digital<br />

media, and real-time and embedded<br />

computer systems such as<br />

pacemakers.
