OUR MISSION
Founded in 1992, Big Apple Greeter’s mission is to enhance New
York City’s worldwide image and enrich the New York experience
by connecting visitors with knowledgeable and enthusiastic
volunteers.
Big Apple Greeter’s core program is its free-of-charge Greeter
Program. A Greeter accompanies one to six visitors on a two- to
four-hour informal visit to one or more neighborhoods throughout
the five boroughs. More than 300 volunteer Greeters speak over 20
languages, donate their time and energy, learn new skills and give
back to their hometown. Visitors spending time with a Greeter
report feeling empowered to venture beyond the City’s typical
tourist destinations, thereby bringing tourism and tourist dollars to
underserved and less visited neighborhoods.
Big Apple Greeter is proud to partner with NYC & Company and
the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Metro New York.
BIG APPLE GREETER CELEBRATES
20 YEARS

Twenty years ago, Lynn Brooks had a deep desire to improve
New York City’s image around the world. This desire, combined
with her experience and passion for the field of human relations,
led to the birth of Big Apple Greeter. The first Greets took place in
May 1992, and since then, more than 120,000 people from 120
countries have been introduced to New York City in a very
special way by a volunteer Greeter. In this annual report,
beginning on page 7, we highlight 19 volunteers who have been
Greeters since its launch, as well as the many ways Big Apple
Greeter continues to grow and inspire.

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR
AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
This year, the year of our 20th anniversary, we were given a true gift: several
opportunities to improve our long-term financial stability.
Despite the ongoing economic crisis – or perhaps because of it – our generous visitors
showed their love and support for Big Apple Greeter by nearly tripling the value of their
donations since fiscal year 2010.
Volunteers also became highly creative in developing new funding. Greeter Rob Gould
celebrated his birthday by conducting several Greets in a day, while his friends
underwrote the event by donating to Big Apple Greeter – thus establishing our first ever
Greet-A-Thon. Greeter Lester Barnett hosted a cocktail reception in his home at The
Osborne, a landmark New York building. Lester shared the building’s history as well as
his dazzling apartment, which he has lovingly restored to 19th century period detail.
A group of office and Greeter volunteers formed a committee to explore ways to
diversify funding and encourage greater financial well-being. They decided to focus on a
neighborhood merchant program, building relationships with businesses that will
benefit us all.
All this has led to a renewed sense of community and excitement among the individuals
and organizations that have supported us. Because they recognize the value of Big
Apple Greeter, they want to ensure that visitors and volunteers can enjoy our program
for many years to come. For this, we are extremely grateful.
Our gratitude knows no bounds when it comes to the Fuserna Foundation and its
founder Ariadne Getty. The foundation’s three-year gift was the largest ever received by
Big Apple Greeter and the donation has been invaluable to us.
Our wonderful volunteers, both Greeters and office staff, are equally invaluable and
today number more than 300 – ages 20 to 91. In this annual report, we devote an entire
section to our 20-year volunteer Greeters, those who have been with us from the very
beginning. You can read their inspiring stories in What They Do for Love, on page 8.
We are always indebted to our Board of Directors for their continued support during
these difficult times. The Board is working hard on a five-year strategic plan to raise local

awareness of Big Apple Greeter. Four of our dedicated board members recently
completed their terms and will be greatly missed: Sergio A. Sanchez - Executive Vice
President, LBOA/Partners; Jeffrey Lam - Managing Member, Lam Generation, LLC;
Steve Swenson - VP and General Manager, 1010 WINS & WCBS NewsRadio 880; and
Cristyne Nicholas - CEO, Nicholas and Lence Communications. George Lence,
President of Nicholas and Lence Communications, has joined our board, continuing
our close relationship with the firm.
Our final thank you goes to Jack Olive for his beautifully detailed history of Big Apple
Greeter, which appeared on our website this past April. His unique ability to tell our
story with such care and affection mirrors what happens between Greeters and visitors
each time they meet. They share their
stories and they feed our craving for
human connection – building bridges
between people from different parts of
the world, one visit at a time.

MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDER
I have spent an unusual amount of time during the
past fiscal year reflecting – with considerable
satisfaction – on how Big Apple Greeter fosters
human connection in this often fragmented world.
Connecting people was, of course, one of the
objectives of the organization when it began in May
1992, so it is hardly a new thought. But a number of
special circumstances during FY12 have brought it to
mind even more compellingly than usual.
For example, later in this report we celebrate 19
wonderful volunteers who have continuously
greeted visitors to the city since the inception of the
program. This calls to mind the many deep
connections Big Apple Greeter has fostered between
individuals here in New York and, in turn, between
people from all over the world. Think how many lives
these volunteers have touched collectively in the past
20 years!
In Fall 2011, we received the second $200,000
installment of a three-year pledge from Ariadne
Getty’s Fuserna Foundation. Big Apple Greeter first
attracted Ariadne’s interest specifically because of its
ability to foster meaningful human connection. The
Fuserna Foundation’s mission is to help nonprofit
organizations that are struggling due to financial
constraints. Its generous support has bought us
much needed time to identify sustainable, long-term
financing. Toward that end, Board Chair Chris
Boylan and I have met recently with a host of
potential new funders and board members, people
who love New York City, understand the value of Big
Apple Greeter and could help us make a Giant Leap
Forward into the future.
We also connected with a number of enthusiastic city
leaders this past year through our Greeter for a Day
program (covered in detail later in this report). City
Council members Daniel Dromm (Queens), Gale
Brewer (Manhattan), Robert Jackson (Manhattan),
and City Comptroller John Liu joined an impressive
list of high-profile New Yorkers who have enjoyed
sharing their city with visitors since this program
began four years ago.
Nor are the human connections Big Apple Greeter
fosters limited to New Yorkers and city visitors. The
Global Greeter Network continues to prosper,
linking Big Apple Greeter, the original, to similar
programs and their respective networks around the
world. Be sure to read the update provided on Global
Greeter Network later in this report.
All in all, I think you will agree that this past fiscal year
has been one of unusually warm and impactful
human connections for Big Apple Greeter. In our
20th anniversary year, we have a lot to be proud of –
and grateful for.

WHO ARE OUR VOLUNTEERS?
Volunteers are the backbone of Big Apple Greeter’s success. What began as a small number of
interested New Yorkers who shared Lynn Brooks’ vision, today includes more than 300 people
from New York City and the surrounding suburbs. These volunteers proudly donate their time as
Greeters or office volunteers, or lend their expertise to various special projects. They include
young adults, working professionals and active retirees. Most volunteers are native New Yorkers,
while others have adopted the City as their home and enjoy sharing what makes it so special to
them with visitors from near and far.

WHAT THEY

On the happy occasion of our
20-year anniversary, what
better way to celebrate than
to shine a light on our own
luminaries: the 20-year
Greeters who have been with
us from the very beginning.
In 1992, these brave souls
took a leap of faith and
landed at Big Apple Greeter,
simply because of their
unabashed love for New
York City and their desire to
show the world what a safe,
warm and welcoming place
our city really is.
As affable as they are
knowledgeable, our 20-year
Greeters have turned many
visitors into lifelong friends.
They share their special
neighborhoods in all five
boroughs – free of charge –
and they present views of the
city as only native New
Yorkers can.
Almost every one of our 20-
year Greeters found out
about Big Apple Greeter
through a small notice in the
Travel section of The New
York Times in 1992.
Our 20-year Greeters have a variety
of reasons they became Greeters in
the first place. Linda Jawitz had
been living in Los Angeles, working
with people who were constantly
badmouthing New York. “They
said it was filthy, unsafe, and
unfriendly – and most of them had
never even been here!” When she
finally got home to New York, a
friend saw the Big Apple Greeter
notice, and she realized this was
her chance to show people how
wonderful the city was.
Fred Alexander was a 10-year-old
German-Jewish refugee who had
to leave Germany in 1939 and
resettle in England. The experience
deeply affected him and today he
takes many visitors from Germany,
Austria and Switzerland out on
Greets. This is Fred’s way of
encouraging healing relations
between Jews and non-Jews.
When Edward Botwin first read
about Big Apple Greeter, it was his
tongue that was most delighted.
Edward has a passion for speaking
foreign languages – French,
German and Spanish – and this is
his way to practice those languages,
while meeting interesting people.
Warren Lewis loves the huge
diversity of people he gets to know.
“I’ve met doctors, lawyers,

business people, teachers,
honeymooners – even a Dutch rock
star and his two bandmates.”
Arnold Strauch had yet another
motive for becoming a Greeter. “I
go on Greets at least once a week –
it makes me feel so productive.
Since I do a lot of walking, it’s
become part of my exercise
routine.” When he walks more than
four hours, Arnold often asks
visitors, “Who’s going to wilt first?”
One of the recurrent themes
among our 20-year Greeters is how
much they learn from their visitors.
Ask Lois Kahan, and she’ll tell you
she’s learned as much from her
visitors as they have from her. For
example, a young German couple
found out you can marry anywhere
in Central Park without a permit – if
your wedding has fewer than 20
people. Visitors also taught Lois
about The Whispering Bench in the
Shakespeare Garden. The bench
holds 20 people, but if one person
whispers at one end, the person at
the other end can hear!
Virginia McManus learns from her
visitors by asking them what they
hadn’t expected to see. One of the
most common answers is portion
sizes. Our portions are so large,
they say, just one of our meals
could be enough for two or three
of them. To Virginia’s great delight,
most visitors think New Yorkers are
really friendly. “I always tell them
we’re a little crazy, but good crazy,
and I warn them that once New
York has a hold on you, you
ALWAYS come back.”
Another common thread among
our Greeters is how generous
visitors can be. Nancy di
Benedetto says her European and
Asian visitors have been especially
thoughtful. A group of German
students gave her a piece of the
Berlin wall; a Scottish family baked
shortbread for her; and a Japanese
couple brought her delicate hand
towels.

Doris Woolfe has one repeat visitor,
a German woman, who knows Doris
has trouble finding her favorite
perfume, “47/11.” So whe never the
woman sees her, she brings Doris
the perfume as a way of saying thank
you.
Joseph Briller says Big Apple
Greeter is the best part of his
retirement because he gets to use
his talents giving something back to
the city. He finds his visitors are
extremely generous emotionally.
Many of Joseph’s visitors tell him the
time he spent with them was the
highlight of their New York trip.
Food makes for great bonding
between Greeters and their visitors.
Although he claims he isn’t a Jewish
mother, Kevin Flanagan LOVES
taking his visitors to eat. “One of my
favorite things is bringing people to
Chinatown for lunch and Little Italy
for dessert.”
One of Ellen Gasnick’s off-thebeaten-path
trips is to Arthur
Avenue in the Bronx. “We have a
great friend in Dave Greco of Mike’s
Deli there,” she claims. “Dave loves
nothing more than giving Greeters
and their visitors a step-by-step
demonstration on how to make
mozzarella cheese.”
Suzanne Paliotta has been known
to go on scavenger hunts to find
certain foods for her visitors. “I took
out a young man from Paris who
was thrilled to discover a certain
marinated vegetable in a jar at one
of our markets – a vegetable he

subway, going to Wall Street,
continuing on to Chinatown for
soup dumplings at Joe’s Shanghai,
then on to SoHo, Greenwich Village
and ending at The High Line – a
five- to seven-mile walk! Peter tells
his visitors they can shorten the visit
anytime they want. Only twice in 20
years has that ever happened.
One of Rita Buttolph’s more
unusual visits was with a Texas man
and his little boy. They had just one
place they wanted to see: the
Statue of Liberty. Before Rita knew
it, she was climbing all 354 stairs to
accompany them to the top.
Ken Stewart, who describes
himself as having low-vision, likes
bringing visitors who also have lowvision
or are blind, to the Staten
Island Ferry so they can hear the
“squeak” of the sea gulls and the
“clang” of the bell buoys.

couldn’t find anywhere in France.”
Suzanne was happy to explain to
him, “If you can’t find it here, you
can’t find it anywhere.”
Our Greeters are nothing if not
creative when they share their own
special view of a New Yorker’s New
York. Diane Raphael is fascinated
by crime scenes from the past. Two
of her favorite places are 18 West
11th Street, the brownstone that
The Weathermen – an anti-Vietnam
War group – blew up in the 1970s,
and the home of prominent
architect, Stanford White, at 10th
Street and Sixth Avenue. White was
killed by Henry Thaw because of his
affair with Thaw’s wife, actress
Evelyn Nesbit.
Peter Hochstein is known for his
“Grand Greets” because they last
from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. He likes
to spend an entire day showing his
visitors around, starting with the
Susanna Sloat says being a Big
Apple Greeter is a “renewing
experience.” She adds, “You’re
always meeting new people and
even if you take them to familiar
places, you see new things that you
never saw before.”
When Joe Zeveloff first started as a
Big Apple Greeter, he wasn’t really
sure how long he’d want to
continue. Twenty years later, he
doesn’t intend to stop. “In fact, I’ve
found these 20 years have really
flown by. I guess this means I’m
having a great time!”

Big Apple Greeter takes
pride in its ability to provide
our Greeters with
opportunities to enhance
their leadership skills and
expand their knowledge of
the city by introducing
neighborhoods and cultural
sites with which they may be
unfamiliar. Greeters in turn
share this knowledge with
visitors, journalists, family,
friends, and other New
Yorkers, further promoting
tourism.
During FY12, nearly 400
volunteers participated in a
record 18 Greeter Outings.
From the bygone grandeur
of City Hall Station to the
once-bustling Brooklyn
Navy Yard, outings added
greatly to the Greeter
knowledge base, while
building community and
camaraderie among the
volunteers. Here are
highlights from two of the
outings:
Hamilton Grange
In fall 2011, Greeters visited
Hamilton Grange, home to
Alexander Hamilton, the first U.S.
Secretary of the Treasury, a
Founding Father and a political
philosopher.
Eighteen Greeters visited the
newly re-opened Hamilton
Grange. The home was actually
moved less than two blocks from
its former site to St. Nicholas Park
in Hamilton Heights. This is a
beautiful section of Manhattan’s
Upper West Side, not far from City
College.
The architect, John McComb,
designed the Federal-style country
home which was completed in

Museum of Arts and
Design
On an unseasonably mild day in
January 2012, 25 Greeters visited
The Museum of Arts and Design –
otherwise known as “MAD.”
For nearly half a century, MAD has
served as the country’s premier
institution that celebrates
contemporary art, craft and design.
The seed for MAD was planted in
1942, when the American
Craftsmen’s Council declared as its
mission to recognize the work of
American craftspeople and the
beauty of the handmade object.
Docent Diane Feldman made our
visit especially interesting. Since
Diane is the wife of one of our
Greeters, she was more than happy
to give us a real “insider’s view.”
Included in that view was an
internationally acclaimed exhibition,
“Korean Eye: Energy and Matter,”
with new work by contemporary
Korean artists in photography,
painting, video, and mixed media.
1802. Today all the furnishings are
from that era. Sadly, Hamilton was
able to enjoy his home for only two
years. In 1804, he was fatally
wounded in a duel with Vice
President Aaron Burr.
It was Big Apple Greeter’s good
fortune to have U.S. Ranger
Edward Pennell as the volunteers’
guide. He was quite
knowledgeable about the history
of the period, the house and its
restoration. As an added bonus,
Council Member Robert Jackson
joined us and described the
official re-opening of Hamilton
Grange. We especially enjoyed a
story about a great-great-greatgrandson
who attended the
re-opening, along with other
descendants.
Another exceptional exhibit was
“Beauty in All Things: Japanese Art
and Design.” Here, Japanese
concepts of beauty included shizen
– the beauty found in nature; wabi
sabi – cracked or chipped objects
that show their age; and datsuzoku
– any object that suggests a feeling
of surprise or fresh creativity.

OUR VISITORS
Volunteers conducted 2,742 Greets during FY12,
slightly more than in the prior year. 84% of these
visits were by travelers who came to New York City
from abroad. The largest group (46%) was from
Western European countries, followed by 20%
who came from the South Pacific region. Many
chose to visit the City to mark special occasions in
their lives such as milestone birthdays,
anniversaries, and honeymoons.
Post-visit surveys of visitors show an
extraordinarily high satisfaction rate, with 97%
agreeing that their Greeter “made a difference” and
96% feeling more comfortable exploring the city on
their own as a result of time spent with a Greeter.
Nearly 75% of visits took place in Manhattan,
followed by Brooklyn (23.3%). More than 25% of
visits were conducted in a foreign language.
German was the most frequently requested
language, closely followed by French. Nearly 25%
of visitors listed food as their number one interest
in exploring New York with a Greeter, with
architecture, history and shopping rounding out
the top four.
ACCESS PROGRAM FOR
TRAVELERS WITH DISABILITIES
Since its inception in 1993, the Big Apple Greeter
Access Program has helped several thousand
travelers with disabilities get the most out of their
visit to New York City. Big Apple Greeter has
recruited and trained more than 50 volunteers with
visible or invisible disabilities, allowing both visitors
and their travel companions to get a unique look at
New York City from someone who has experience
and knowledge of accessible options. All
volunteers, regardless of ability level, receive
sensitivity awareness information during their
orientation, which heightens awareness about
disabilities and ensures that all Greeters are better
able to make their visitors’ trip to New York City
wonderful and memorable.
MAKE-A-WISH FOUNDATION
VISITORS
For nine years, Big Apple Greeter has maintained
and nurtured a very special partnership with the
Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Metro New York.
Specially selected volunteers introduce the City to
children with life-threatening illnesses and their
families. The children who are chosen have
expressed a very specific wish to see New York City
or meet a public figure who is based in the City.
During FY12, Greeters conducted 13
Make-A-Wish® visits, providing a meaningful and
memorable service for these children and their
families. The Make-A-Wish Greeters are Coreen
Bourke, Robert Goldsman, Linda Gralitzer, Rosita
Jalowski, Leonore Lowenthal, Sharon Messing,
Dolores Morris, Giacinta Pace, Cynthia Riley,
Robert Schiff, Sami Steigmann and Susan Turok.

GREETER FOR
A DAY
In August 2008, Big Apple Greeter
introduced the Greeter for a Day
program which matches New York
political leaders, corporate
executives and celebrities with
global visitors to experience New
York through the eyes of real New
Yorkers.
Council Member Daniel Dromm
In March 2012, Councilman Daniel
Dromm showed Esther and Mario
Van Houton from The Netherlands
around Jackson Heights, Queens –
one of his district neighborhoods
and home to a variety of stores,
cultures and cuisines.
Accompanied by Greeter Sam
Weiss, he explained to Esther and
Mario that 68% of community
residents are immigrants from
South Asian countries, and from
South American countries such as
Colombia, Argentina and Peru.
“You can visit many countries here
in one subway ride,” the
Councilman said with pride.
Residents appreciated seeing the
Councilman walking around the
neighborhood with the visitors,
and took the opportunity to say
“Hi” to the public figure. Esther
and Mario were excited to see the
diversity and friendliness of
Jackson Heights, and felt they
were “standing in the middle of
real American life, not what
tourists see.”

On June 7, 2011, visitors from
Nuremburg, Germany, had the
pleasure of visiting a piece of
New York history – Jumel Terrace
Historic District in Washington
Heights – with Big Apple Greeter
for a Day New York City
Comptroller John Liu.
Sisters Kathrin and Annette
Bachhofer, along with two of their
friends, Andrea Kern and Martina
Leuschner, were joined by
Greeter Chafin Elliott; Council
Member Ydanis Rodriguez;
Kenneth Moss, director of the
Morris-Jumel Mansion; Raybblin
Vargas and Obie Bing from
Community Board 12; Maria
Luna, a district leader; and
Yvonne Stennent, a community
organizer from CLOTH
(Community League of the
Heights). Led by Comptroller Liu,
the group walked up a flight of
nearly hidden stairs to Jumel
Terrace, and was immediately
transported 140 years back in
time. In front of them stood
Sylvan Terrace, a street lined with
wood-framed row houses dating
back to the 1880s and the Morris-
Jumel Mansion, Manhattan’s
oldest house and headquarters of
General Washington in

All had the unexpected pleasure of
viewing the elegant wood paneled
interior of Council Member Brewer’s
beautiful Victorian home. It was the
perfect ending to a memorable visit
to New York City!
September and October of 1776.
Further down the road was 555
Edgecomb Avenue, a famous
building in which Duke Ellington
and Etta James lived during the
Harlem Renaissance.
The visitors weren’t the only ones
touched by this moment in which
a city filled with skyscrapers
revealed its roots. Comptroller Liu
said “being a Greeter for a
Day enables you to hold New
York City in the palm of your
hand, as well as in your heart. It is
a special opportunity to give a
different perspective to visitors
who come from far and wide by
showing them a district that is a
page out of history.”

visitors enjoyed their trip to
Manhattan’s City Hall for a real-life
press conference and tour of the

joined other elected officials for an
exciting City Council Meeting,
during which Big Apple Greeter
was presented with a Proclamation

INFORMATION PROFILES
Big Apple Greeter’s Neighborhood
Information Profiles are helpful glimpses into
the kaleidoscopic neighborhoods that exist
within each of New York City’s five boroughs.
Designed, written and photographed by
volunteers, the Neighborhood Information
Profiles feature the history and culture, local
attractions, shopping and dining
recommendations – as well as a helpful street
map with directions via public transportation
– for distinctive neighborhoods within the
Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and
Staten Island. In FY12, Big Apple Greeter
added seven new or updated Profiles,
making an impressive list of 34, including Park
Slope and Fort Greene in Brooklyn; the Tip of
Manhattan, Tribeca, Hamilton Heights, and
Inwood in Manhattan; and Jackson Heights in
Queens.

GLOBAL GREETER
NETWORK
The Global Greeter Network (GGN) is an
informal association of greeter programs
around the world, formed for sharing
information and best practices. Established in
2005, the Global Greeter Network has
quickly grown to include 16 countries and 31
organizations. GGN member organizations
are based on the Big Apple Greeter model
and provide services that are free, open to all
visitors, and engage only volunteer Greeters.
Working as a mutually supportive
confederation, GGN members get together
once a year to share ideas and explore ways
to work together, as well as bring people from
different countries and cultures together. The
2011 annual meeting was hosted by Houston
Greeters in October.

From traditional newspapers to social media, Big Apple
Greeter remains a topic of interest to media around the world.
Media coverage and social conversation included positive
recommendations on TripAdvisor.com® and profiles of several
Greeters in The New York Timesand television’s NY1.
Led by volunteer Denise Brown, who was succeeded by
Greeter Leanna Scatoloni, talk about Big Apple Greeter
grew significantly across several social media platforms
this year. More than 2,000 people around the world have
expressed their “Like” for Big Apple Greeter on
Facebook, and another 1,400 follow us on Twitter.
Conversations cover a wide range of topics, with a focus
on things to see and do in New York City.
SCRUMPTIOUS NIBBLES OF THE BIG APPLE
A growing number of New Yorkers and visitors are reading Big
Apple Greeter’s weekly “Scrumptious Nibbles of the Big
Apple” on Facebook and Twitter. From festivals to films, and
performances of all kinds, the weekly recommendations
describe free activities for people of all ages in all five boroughs.

FALL BENEFIT
More than 160 friends and supporters attended Big Apple Greeter’s
annual Fall Benefit, this time aboard Statue Cruises’ Respect. The hourlong
cruise around New York Harbor included beautiful views of the
Manhattan skyline and the presentation of awards to several business
leaders who, like Big Apple Greeter, have made a significant impact on
local tourism.
The Hospitality Industry Award was given to Statue Cruises; the
Community Service Award was presented to Robert K. Steel, deputy

Big Apple Greeter’s annual Spring Recognition

GREET-A-THON
Rob Gould, a man of many talents including composer,
playwright and court judge, has been a Greeter for more
than 13 years. Rob had something special in mind to
celebrate his birthday on August 2, 2011. He volunteered
to raise money for Big Apple Greeter by conducting
three Greets on his actual birthday and invited friends
and family to underwrite the event. Nearly 40 donors
contributed, raising more than $2,000.
During the day, Rob met with a family from France, a
young woman from Australia, and a father and daughter
from Missouri, a true cross-section of the visitors that Big
Apple Greeter welcomes to the City throughout the
year. The day concluded with a gathering of friends,
family, Big Apple Greeter board members, staff and
volunteers at a restaurant and bar in Midtown South to
wish Rob a very happy birthday and thank him for
including Big Apple Greeter in his birthday celebration.

The Osborne
Lester Barnett, a Greeter since 2003, generously opened
his beautifully restored apartment at The Osborne, an
iconic New York City apartment building, to Big Apple
Greeter on October 20, 2011 for a small cocktail
reception. Lester was intent on creating a space that
accurately depicted the Victorian style of the late 19th
century. And as head of The Osborne’s Preservation
Committee, Lester eagerly shared his knowledge of
restoring his apartment as well as the history of the
magnificent and majestic building. This unique space,
purchased from celebrity Dick Clark, drew together
board members, donors, volunteers and friends to share
their Big Apple Greeter stories.

SKY AUCTION
Big Apple Greeter posted two wonderful items for
bid on SkyAuction.com. This unique company is a
fast-growing travel auction marketplace where one
can purchase airline tickets, hotel stays, all-inclusive
vacations, tours, cruises, restaurant certificates, and
more. Through the generosity of Sal Esposito, the
company’s COO, and Michael Hering, CEO, Big
Apple Greeter received 100% of the proceeds from
each package that was auctioned off – nearly $2,000.
YEAR-END CAMPAIGN
Donations received from our annual year-end
campaign totaled -$13,710 in 2011, representing an
increase of 47% over 2010. Campaign donors
included grateful visitors, loyal volunteers and
friends, as well as board members. During the year,
we continue to engage our friends and donors
through social media, quarterly e-newsletters,
Neighborhood Information Profiles and Greeter
Outings.
VOLUNTEER FUNDRAISING
COMMITTEE
In December 2011, a volunteer fundraising
committee met for the very first time to brainstorm
new ways to raise financial support for our core
program. A result of the meeting was the formation
of a subcommittee to develop a Neighborhood
Merchant Membership Program, to launch in late
2012, spearheaded by office volunteer Bill Niles and
Greeters Bob Moore and Barbara Rohdie.
The premise behind the Neighborhood Merchant
Membership Program is that all Greeters have
favorite neighborhood establishments where they
regularly take visitors. They love to share places that
are off the beaten track and not well known. The new
subcommittee aims to put that great information to
good use by asking neighborhood businesses to
become local sponsors of Big Apple Greeter in
appreciation for their support.

and pets, office products, cards and postage,
accessories, clothing, art, posters and electronics.
