Spooky Cubees Teens will make their own spooky cubee — a vampire, werewolf or Frankenstein — out of cardstock paper at the Jones Creek Regional Branch on Saturday, October 15, at 2:30 p.m. For more information or to register, call (225) 756-1170. Book Bundles The Main Library’s Children’s Room bundled several books together for easy selection and checkout! Bundles are grouped in themes such as Nursery Rhymes and Staff Favorites. Jump Start’s Read for the Record 2011 In conjunction with JumpStart’s Read for the Record 2011, several Library branches will read Llama Llama Red Pajama on Thursday, October 6. The goal of Read for the Record is to have children all over the world reading or being read this story on the same day. Patrons and staff are invited to wear their PJs! Children ages 4-9 will make a colorful paper plate wreath from construction paper leaves at the Baker Branch on Wednesday, October 12, at 4:30 p.m. A book about the seasons of an apple tree, The Apple Pie Tree by Zoe Hall, will be read before we make the wreaths. Fall Festival Celebrate fall at Zachary Branch with games, crafts, face painting, and a costume contest on Tuesday, October 25, at 4:00 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for the most creative, most literary, cutest and best overall costume. Changing Leaves Children ages 8-11 are invited to join us and celebrate the coming of fall and the changing colors of the leaves on Thursday, October 13, at 4:30 p.m. at the Carver Branch. We will read I Know It’s Autumn by Eileen Spinelli, and then we will make a craft using paper plates, brass fasteners, and sponged paint to show how the trees change color throughout the year! Children ages 5-8 will learn interesting apple facts and make apple prints at the Carver Branch on Tuesday, October 4, at 4:00 p.m. For more information, call (225) 389-7460. Autumn Colors Children ages 5-8 will listen to the story Clifford’s First Autumn, at the Pride- Chaneyville Branch on Saturday, October 15, at 2:30 p.m. Then, we’ll make a fun craft by tracing the outlines of fall leaves onto white paper with a black crayon and paint the inside of each leaf shape with different fall colors. For more information or to register, call (225) 658-1560. The Book Buffs Go Batty! The Book Buffs—the Baker Branch’s children’s book club will be reading Bed, Bats & Beyond by Joan Holub. The bat kids in the book learn that not all stories are good ones to tell at bedtime! Children will take turns reading aloud from the book and then talk about the story over cookies and lemonade on Saturday, October 29, at 4:00 p.m. Afterward, they will each make a bat clip they can take home to use as a Halloween decoration. Children ages 3 and up will listen to a story by Tom McDermott, The Ghouls Come Haunting One by One, at the Bluebonnet Regional Branch, on Saturday, October 1, at 10:30 a.m. The children will then be invited to make a ghostly door hanger for their very own. Children ages 3 to 5 will listen to Bat Jamboree by Kathi Appelt at the Bluebonnet Regional Branch, and then make a goofy, cross-eyed bat hat on Saturday, October 22, at 10:30 a.m. Not scary—just fun! Batty Halloween Storytime and Craft The River Center Branch invites children ages 5-9 to get their Halloween celebration started a little early with a fun Batty Halloween Storytime on Saturday, October 22, at 10:00 a.m. Hear Bats at the Library by Brian Lies, and other spooky bat and Halloween stories. Then, children will make coat hunger bat mobiles, using the hanger, cardstock, markers or crayons, scissors, glue, string, and batting. Adding a highlight of glow-in-the-dark paint to the bats’ eyes will create a fun, spooky Halloween decoration to take home! For more information, call (225) 389-4959. Halloween—What Was I Scared Of? Ghosts float by…bats fly overhead…jack-o-lanterns grin up at you. There’s nothing to be scared of except that it’s Halloween! Hooray! Children ages 4-6 are invited to join us at the Main Library for some Halloween fun on Saturday, October 29, at 3:00 p.m. We’ll begin with oh-so-scary (maybe not-so-scary) stories, go on a ghost hunt, and make Halloween masks!
