Haunted House Costumes Jennifer Haskell, a costume designer for Hasmic Costumes and Productions, will give a presentation on making zombie and other scary costumes at the Baker Branch on Tuesday, October 4, at 4:00 p.m. She’ll also give a laptop slideshow presentation on past haunted house productions. Congratulations to Zachary Branch Teens The Teen Library Crew at the Zachary Branch entered a CREDO Reference database video contest this summer – and they won! Their light-hearted video referenced major works of literature throughout the ages as it promoted use of libraries overall. Teens tied for first place with a library in Arkansas, and will receive a prize pack from Credo Reference and the Teen Crew at Zachary will receive iPads! The Creepy Creative Challenge Do you have what it takes to be the master of the ghouls? Tweens and teens are invited to the Carver Branch to test their spooktacular creative skills with challenges like “tower of terror,” “dead & past,” “spooktionary,” and “best bard” on Wednesday, October 26, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information, call (225) 389-7450. Calaveras Skulls! In Mexico, the Day of the Dead is celebrated by visiting cemeteries and decorating with Calaveras, which are skulls. Get ready for Halloween by coming to the Eden Park Branch to make a small Calaveras skull from white air dry clay to wear as a necklace. You can then decorate your skull with colored pens to make a totally cool and creepy piece of jewelry on Thursday, October 27, at 3:00 p.m. Happy Halloween! Pumpkin Painting Come to Pride-Chaneyville Branch and paint a pumpkin to display for Halloween! Alternative Book Covers Contest Teens will get their creative juices flowing by designing a new, alternative book cover for a teen book of their choice to be displayed during Teen Read Week at the Scotlandville Branch. Book covers need to be submitted by October 15. In addition, teens will be invited to vote for their favorite entry during Teen Read Week, October 16 through the 22, and the winner will be announced on Monday, October 24. In honor of this week, we will make altered books on Wednesday, October 19, at 4:00 p.m. An altered book is one that has been changed from its original form into a mixed-media work of art. Eden Park Teen Book Club Come and join us for the first meeting of our new Eden Park Teen Book Club! We will serve refreshments and select a book for the new club to read on Wednesday, October 12, at 3:00 p.m. Teens are welcome to bring suggestions for favorite titles to read and discuss. In honor of Teen Read Week, teens at the Baker Branch can play a fun “Book Speed Dating” game on Wednesday, October 19, at 4:00 p.m. They’ll have three minutes to look over a book and then rate its “dating” potential before moving on to the next book. Hopefully, they’ll find some books that are “soul mate” material! After all rounds are completed, they’ll discuss their first impressions of all the books. Light refreshments will be served. Join this month’s Classics Club at the Zachary Branch as we discuss Anne Sewell’s Black Beauty, The Autobiography of a Horse, which tells of the challenges and triumphs of a horse in the 19 th century.
