Daphne Odjig has long been heralded as the Grand Lady of First Nations art in Canada. She is the only 

female member of the Woodlands School, and is a founder of the Professional Native Indian Artists 

Incorporation - known colloquially as the Indian Group of Seven. While her work is related stylistically to 

her First Nations peers, using well-defined areas of uniform colours, flat panes of space and black 

outlines, her subjects are quite different. Scenes of family life, motherhood, birth and death take 

precedence. Her work is often joyous, as with this celebratory scene. Compositionally, the figures are 

interconnected, underscoring the feeling of unity, and the vibrant palette adds to the exuberance of the 

scene. Odjig's work is often optimistic and positive, part of its enduring appeal.
