Provenance:
Literature:
An Important Montreal Collection
Pierre Alechinsky, Alexander Calder, Joan Miró and Jean-Paul Riopelle each produced an original
lithograph for this limited edition album for the benefit of the Fondation de la Fédération internationale
des Jeunesses musicales Marcel Cuvelier - René Nicoly.
The lithographs by Alechinsky, Calder and Riopelle were printed by Ateliers Arte, Adrien Maeght in Paris,
and the lithograph by Miró was printed by Damian Caud in Barcelona.
As noted on the presentation page of the album, Alexander Calder was to sign his lithographs upon his
return to the United States - however he passed away November 11, 1976, before he was able to sign
them. Thus, the Calder lithograph is the only one unsigned in this album.
The lithographs are included in the original hard cover linen presentation portfolio.
Provenance: Imre Pan Mezei, Budapest, circa 1963
Literature: Werner Spies, Vasarely, 1969, page 13, a similar work entitled Laika II reproduced
page 41
Before Victor Vasarely devoted himself to painting full time in 1944, he worked as a graphic designer.
Revisiting his studies for textile designs from 1932, described by Werner Spies as “an interchange of
plus forms and minus forms…and their uniform proliferation in every direction,” inspired Vasarely's Black
& White period in the 1950s, most of which featured squares, circles and rhomboid shapes, as in Laika.
The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by Pierre Vasarely.
