Dr. Mahesh Amin, Our Junior Sardar
His height is like Lal Bahadur Shastri, but his vision is like Sardar Patel. Yes, we are
talking about Dr. Mahesh Amin, an emerging leader in Tampa Bay 's Indian community.
Most people can say that they are either first or second generation Indian, but Dr.
Amin is one and three-quarters generation Indian. He was born in India , but as a child he
immigrated to the United States with his parents. He grew up in New York , where he also
completed his Medical School and Cardiology Fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital . He eventually moved to
Florida in the early 90's.
At the moment, he is practicing Cardiology in Clearwater . He has been involved in numerous scientific
presentation and clinical trials. In 2008, he became the Chief of Staff at Morton Plant in Clearwater ,
and is now currently serving as Vice Chairman of the Hospital Board. Not only he is well liked by his parents,
but he is also a darling to the Hospital Administration, his colleagues, and to hospital staff members.
Someone had once correctly said, "You can take an Indian out of India , but you can't take India out
of the Indian." This is true for Dr. Amin, as he is still desi at heart by enjoying Indian food and attending
Indian parties. He also encourage his daughter, Sonia, to participate in various Indian cultural activities.
Like Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, Dr. Amin is a new generation Indian leader. Compared to the
first generation of Indian leaders, he has a unique way of handling problems. His spirit is still Indian but his
resolutions and efforts are fully American. He is friendly and polite with everybody and does a good job of
not offending anyone. He has even tried to unite our divided Gujarati community.
Kiranbhai has laid a solid foundation for the India Cultural Center but for the last few years, his efforts
have been stalled by apathy from our Indian community. He has passed the torch to Dr. Amin, and Dr.
Amin is running the sprint successfully. He has given new momentum to the fundraising efforts for the India
Cultural Center . His goal is to pay the debt for mortgage as soon as possible so the future revenues can
be used for further development of our community.
I encourage all the members of our Indian community to support Dr. Amin in his goal to form India
Cultural Center into a successful entity.
India Festival 2009
India: Unity in Diversity
By Mona Shah
As a daughter of Indian American parents, I have had the opportunity to visit and travel around India
several times. I couldn’t help but notice one interesting fact: the amount of diversity existing in India. It
was even more interesting to note that, in spite of that diversity, the whole country and its people, feel and
behave as one. On further observation, the details that I found were even more thrilling.
Languages
All countries have some degree of diversity. The most unique
diversity in India is the number languages spoken in one
country. It is estimated that there are more than1652 “mother
tongues” spoken in India. Out of these languages, 18 are recognized
as “official languages.” Some of these major languages
include Hindi, Punjabi, Kashmiri (northern India), Gujarati
and Marathi (western India), Tamil, Telugu, Kannad, Malayali
(southern India), Oriya (southeastern India), and Bengali and
Assames (eastern India). There are also several different written
languages.
Holidays
Indians celebrate their holidays with great enthusiasm and flourish.
The major holidays are Deepawali, Makar Snakrant, Holi
and Janmashtami, which are celebrated throughout the country,
differing only in manner. Regional festivals include, but are not
limited to, the following: Navratri (western India), Durga Pooja
(eastern India), Baisakhi and Nanak Jayanti (northern India),
Iyyappan Pujas (southern India), Kumbh Mela (northeastern
India), and Rath yatra (southeastern India), to name a few.
Religions
Religions practiced in India are also equally diverse. Hinduism
(82%), Christianity (2.5%), Islam (11.7%), Sikhism (2%) gives
some idea of the distribution in religion. Jainism, Buddhism,
Judaism, Zorastrianism etc. are other examples.
Clothing
Clothing and fashion in India varies widely in different regions.
Besides usual shirts and pants, men wear dhotis, kedia, safo,
turbans, lungi, khes, kamarbandh and much more. There are
several varieties of saries and styles of wearing them. This differs
significantly from region-to-region.
Architecture
Due to a long and rich history, Indian architecture is also very
diverse. Mogul style architecture is seen in the north with their
vast palaces, forts and mosques. The world famous Taj Mahal
is one example of such architecture. The temples with tall
shikhars are studded with intricate carvings like the Minakshi
temple in Madurai and the temples of Rameshwaram and
Tirumali. The caves of Ajanta, Ellora and Delwara temples
display their unique style in western India. The Golden temple
in the north carries a special flavor of its own.
Art
India has a significant variety of craft. One cannot help admire
the art work in Kanchivarm saries of south or the Pashmina
shawls of the north. Styles of paintings also differ from regionto-region.
Dance/Music
There are so many varieties of dances that it is believed that
each state has its own set of unique dances. The Bharat Natyam,
Kathakali, Garba/Raas, Manipuri, Oddisi are few of the more
widely known dances. The variety of languages, customs and
dances are also supported by a vast variety of music.
Cuisine
Indian food is liked throughout the world. Interestingly, it varies
from region to region. Punjabi dishes such as chana, daal,
paneer, naan, subji are different than western daal, rice, roti,
and subji. Southern dishes such as dosa, Uttapam, Medu vada
are popular throughout the country. Eastern India is known for
its sweets such as Gulab Jamun, Ras Gulla, Ras Malai, Sandesh
etc.
Geography/Climate
India’s geography is equally diverse. The cold Himalayas in the
north contrast greatly with the warm and humidity of the south.
The desert of the west hardly gets any rain while some places in
the eastern forests receive 600 inches of rain in a year.
In spite of this diversity, India displays an unquestionable unity.
While languages are plentiful, most of them are derived from
three or four major languages so many words are similar. Due
to the popularity of Bollywood movies, Hindi and English are
spoken nearly throughout the country. Although the holidays
are celebrated with different flavors across the country, many of
the festivals, such as Deepawali, Holi, and Sankrant, are common
to all regions.
Above all, Hinduism and its message of tolerance and welcoming
diversity, is a major bonding factor for the majority of the
population. Clothing, cuisine, literature, music, architecture all
have differences but it also has lots of common ground elements.
The Vedic literature and epics such as Mahabharata and
Ramayana are common to the entire country. Geographically,
India is truly a subcontinent separated from the rest of the world
by the Himalayas in the north, desert in the west and oceans in
the south and east. The geographic boundaries have naturally
made Indians feel united and safer from invasions. India's
struggle for freedom against Britain was a greatly unifying
force. The independent India’s democratic and secular constitution
also seems to have helped the feeling of equality and unity.
Interestingly, thousand years of foreign intrusions have contributed
to enrichment of India's diversity to some degree. The
most important benefit of diversity that I noted was that Indians
are used to different opinions, ideas and thoughts, which they
respect, cherish and benefit from.
What heritage do you want to leave for your children
By: Ilesh Patel
Living outside of the motherland India has always raised an endless debate in my mind about what
benefits I have gained through such a huge trade off. Assimilation into this new land of opportunities
might not have been as challenging as it was once, especially for the people coming from India with the
abundance of morals and cultural values. Society and its cultural values do play a major role in shaping
up child’s character in his early childhood through adult years which leaves a huge impression for the
later part of life as well.
All parents love their children dearly, however, for Indian parents, this thread seems to go beyond rational
thinking. Being a first generation Indian, I am extremely gratified with the time I spent in India with my
parents, teachers, relatives, and friends in my school and college days. Society where I grew up was
full of compassion and quite accommodating. I always believed that in the history of mankind, each
successive generation lived in more comfort and luxury than their predecessors; my child would naturally
enjoy the benefits of advances in science and technology. But the flip side of the coin is that we have
found the innovative ideas of breaking our traditional values and ideals. Who would be more concerned
about this than a parent who dearly loves his child and would like to give out his entire life and more so a
cultural heritage which once he received from his parents?
Ageless wisdom has shown us that passing on the morals and knowledge to our children is our duty and
obligation. I would like to leave my child with heritage which guides her to leave a life full of human spirit.
If the seed of righteousness is planted in their tender minds, then it can grow and help build a tree of
character.
Especially, living in the western hemisphere, where the very same freedom which gave a birth to a
great nation, United States, can cross moral boundaries and leave young minds in front of incessant
bombarding of below the norm television programs and unethical internet contents. I believe that it is
every child’s birth right to grow up in a moral and ethical society. Certainly, if I can teach very basic ideas
of our ancient Vedic values and morals such as respecting parents, teachers, and adults in the society,
and the significance of family values, marriage and its sanctity and stay on the course of dharma, then it
would be a great tribute to my parents and me. Treasures of great knowledge about this existence and
beyond have always been a point of attraction for western philosophers and researchers. Introducing
my child to the scope or vastness of this knowledge of spirituality and letting her know about the great
rushies, saints and the true spirit of our major festivals would definitely be the best heritage that she
would receive to live a better life.
So how can a parent leave behind a great heritage to their children? Your child’s observation inside of
the family creates a permanent impression on his mind. If you want protect them from the invasion of bad
outside influences, then live the life of high morals which you want your children to follow. I would also
like to mention that according to Hindu philosophy, human life is a great opportunity in terms of spiritual
growth, and there are other dimensions which can be explored through our heritage. Therefore, I would
definitely like to pass on the awareness of this possibility to my children.
