Women’s Hall of Fame:Dr. Pallavi PatelOur own Dr. Pallavi Patel of Tampa Bayreceived a rare honor when the FloridaGovernor Charlie Crist announced her selectionfor induction into the Florida Women’sHall of Fame. On March 11th, 2008, a ceremonyand reception washeld honoring threewomen selected to beinducted into theFlorida Women’s Hall ofFame. Governor Cristselected the womenfrom a list of 10 finalists,presented to him by theFlorida Commission onthe Status of Women.She is the first Indianwoman to receive thisprestigious award.“These women representthe very best ofFlorida,” GovernorCrist said, “Their accomplishments are notonly impressive, but have impacted theircommunities in a powerful and meaningfulway. It gives me great pleasure to honor theircontributions to our state through theFlorida Women’s Hall ofFame.”Beginning of 1989, sheworked to bring Indian cultureto her new home by co-foundingthe Annual India festival atthe Sun Dome at University ofSouth Florida. Her philanthropicheart gave a donation of$5 million dollars to Tampa BayPerforming Arts Center toestablish a school in her name.Together Dr. Pallavi and Dr.Kiran Patel have established aninstitute of GlobalUnderstanding at USF understandingglobal issues related tohealth and education. Theirproject in Africa has helped patients withHIV/AIDS and children born with congenitalheart problems. Not forgetting their hometown, Mota Fofalia, Drs. Patel have establishedand supported schools, hospitals andcommunity revitalizing projects in this ruralvillage of Gujarat. As a special honor in 2005,Dr. Pallavi Patel was individually celebratedas the Tampa Bay Business Woman of theYear by the Tampa Bay Business Journal.“Our fear paralyses our thinking power” 81
