Schools Poster Competition:
Taking Part
For over 30 years, we have asked school children across Scotland to create a poster design that captures their
interpretation of the Fringe. This is the perfect opportunity for your pupils to learn more about the Fringe, and for
budding artists and designers to be part of the biggest arts festival in the world.
Resources
Help inspire your class to create their poster designs with a range of resources available at
www.edfringe.com/poster, including:
• Galleries of Fringe photos and past winning posters
• A briefing sheet for your class (included with this pack)
• Free lesson plans with suggestions for cross-curricular activities to help introduce your class to the
competition and the Fringe.
Prizes
The winning design will become the official poster for the 2012 Edinburgh Festival Fringe and will also be used for
a range of merchandise. The top three pupils will also win a cash prize for themselves and their schools.
Pupil School
1st prize £300 £750
2nd prize £150 £500
3rd prize £100 £300
Virgin Money will also be offering the top three prize winners and their families tickets to the Virgin Money
Fireworks Concert in Edinburgh next summer.
The 2011 Fringe Schools Poster Competition winner was Ailsa Purdie from the High School of Dundee. Ailsa and
runners-up Kara Paterson and Katie McKenzie were presented with their prizes at a special event at Edinburgh’s
Museum of Childhood.
‘We were all delighted in
school with Ailsa’s win. The
prize money has greatly
benefited the art department
– it has been used to
provide lasting departmental
resources, such as a new
embellisher for senior pupils
to use for textiles projects
and digital cameras for
each classroom.’
‘Our involvement with the
poster competition has been
a very inspiring and positive
experience, not only for
shortlisted pupils, but for all
our pupils who got involved.
It gives our pupils a
chance to work as graphic
designers in the real world.’
