It is intended to restore archived recordings that have been rendered useless by wow and flutter. Capstan detects wow and flutter by analysing the musical material itself, so the medium is of no relevance. This means that it still works even if the tape has already been copied several times or digitised only in low resolution. Capstan is based on the patented Direct Note Access technology made famous by Melodyne. Whilst the precise detection of the wow and flutter represents the technological breakthrough, repairing the recording is relatively simple. The musical material is played back with the velocity curve inverted, thus avoiding unwanted artifacts. During its test phase, the program was used to restore a 1954 recording of Wilhelm Furtwängler conducting Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. “Even to this day, the interpretation is regarded as perfect,” related Celemony’s Mathis Nitschke, “ but the same unfortunately could no longer be said of the tape, chronic wow and flutter and even a momentary tape freeze having hitherto spoilt the enjoyment. Thanks to Capstan, a restored version will now be released in 2012.” www.capstan.celemony.com Major Cedar Cambridge Upgrade Cedar Audio’s CEDAR Cambridge V7 is now available. The new version represents the most significant upgrade to the system since its launch in 2003. Amongst the updated features are a new file processing architecture and report generation, designed for users with large bodies of material to process. The system is also now able to import MP3 files directly and to extract audio from video formats.
