Semester 1<br />

C++/Object Oriented Programming (<strong>SUPA</strong>COO)<br />

Assessment: Continuous Assessment<br />

This course includes three lab sessions based in Glasgow which<br />

students will need to attend in person. This course has priority booking<br />

for Particle Physics students. Please refer to the timetable and visit the<br />

My.<strong>SUPA</strong> course area for more information.<br />

Course Description<br />

This course introduces students to C++ via lectures and handson<br />

sessions. The topics covered are: C++ Syntax; standard out,<br />

in and error, loops and conditional C++ statements, Basic file<br />

streams; Objects 1: implementing objects, member functions, objectobject<br />

communication, operator overloading, inheritance; Object 2:<br />

polymorphism, templates, the Standard template library.<br />

All <strong>SUPA</strong> students are required to complete 20 hours <strong>of</strong> Core Skills<br />

Training during the first two years <strong>of</strong> their PhD studies. <strong>SUPA</strong> Core<br />

Skills Training <strong>Courses</strong> are listed on the following pages. However,<br />

students may also participate in Generic Skills Training run by their local<br />

departments and universities or run by Vitae (a UK-wide organisation<br />

sponsoring Generic Skills Training) or their Research Councils.<br />

Please note that enrolment for Core Skills Training is <strong>of</strong>ten run separately<br />

from enrolment procedures for Technical <strong>Courses</strong>. Information about<br />

enrolment procedures for each course will be posted on My.<strong>SUPA</strong><br />

Course Description<br />

This course provides an introduction to uncertainty in measurements and<br />

how to understand and deal with data. Topics will include: random error<br />

and relation to statistics; probability distributions and their properties;<br />

calculation <strong>of</strong> uncertainty; least squares model; applications <strong>of</strong> data<br />

analysis.<br />

Course Description<br />

The course will be in the form <strong>of</strong> a maths primer intended for beginning<br />

PhD students in condensed matter, solid state and photonics.<br />

The topics which will be covered include: Matrix diagonalisation,<br />

complex integration and residues, Fourier transforms, and a discussion<br />

on different notations which the students will encounter during their<br />

studies.<br />
