Bolivian Mission
50th Anniversary Celebration
On the feast day of St. Michael the Archangel,
September 29, 2009, the Congregation
will celebrate in La Paz the 50th anniversary of
the founding of the Bolivian mission. When we
we will acknowledge those members of our
province who ministered in Bolivia. If you have
served in the Bolivian mission and would like
to represent our province at the September 29th
2009 Congregational Prayer Calendar
At the next local leader’s conference in
the fall, the topic of the Congregational Prayer
Calendar will be on the agenda. The provincial
office would like to explore various options on
how to make the prayer calendar available in
ways that meet the needs of local houses and individual
members today. In the meantime, we
encourage you to use either the prayer calendar
on the international website or the printed prayer
calendar from 2008.
Resurrectionist Missions Committee
This committee, which was established
in September 2008, is composed of three members:
Susan Millar (provincial treasurer), Terry
McGuire and Jerry Kroetsch. Its mandate is to facilitate
the transfer of funds received by Resurrectionist
Missions, a Canadian charity, to Bolivia,
Tanzania and elsewhere. No longer is it permissible
simply to transfer money to the missionaries
and allow them to spend the money as they
deem fit. Resurrectionist Missions comes under
the jurisdiction of Canada Revenue Agency and
its regulations. Since the rise of global terrorism
Canadian groups supporting overseas enterprises
of any type need to be in complete control of how
the money is spent. This means we need to have
detailed signed agreements with overseas groups
and designate them as our agents. They in turn,
as spelled out by the agreements, must agree to
follow the rules of Canada Revenue Agency. Our
office in Waterloo must maintain records which
document where the money was spent – quotes
on projects, the need for the project, plans of the
project, receipts from sellers and/contractors,
etc.
For over a year Susan Millar has been
studying our obligations as a charity. In September
she began sharing this information with
Fathers Jerry and Terry. In September, she encouraged
Fr. Jerry to attend a conference in Saskatoon
held for treasurers of religious institutes
across Canada in order to become familiar with
the procedures. The next step was to modify and
complete three agreements (begun by Fr. Voisin)
in order to have the Congregation in Bolivia set
up as our agent; to approve the purchase of 16
computer stations for the Bolivian mission (rectory,
a youth study room at the parish and a youth
study room in Ovejuyo), and the purchase agreement
with the Bolivian company with the best
quote for the computers.
Fortunately, we learned in the process
that there was a parishioner in La Paz who volunteers
at the rectory and who is fluent in English.
Mr. Javier Gamarra was a novice in our province
in the early 1990’s. This was important since the
three priests at the mission are from Poland and
do not speak English. However, since we were
informing them that a lot more work would be
required on their part in order to receive financial
assistance, we thought that a personal visit to La
Paz was best to make sure they would be able
and willing to comply. Also, there were a number
of issues re bank accounts, signing authority, etc
that needed to be clarified. As a result the committee
decided that a personal visit to La Paz was
in order. Fathers Terry and Jerry made the trip
from November 25 to December 2, 2008. The
trip was fruitful and worthwhile. We were able
to convince the missionaries that the extra work
and accountability we expected was required by
our government and not because we mistrusted
them. We also were able to learn more about the
political/social situation in the country which determined
how we need to transfer the funds to
them. Finally, we were able to purchase the computers
immediately and arrange payment.
The committee is also in the process of
purchasing a Toyota HILUX truck for the mission
in Tanzania. This is going more swiftly since
the Polish men there studied English in Waterloo
prior to their assignments in Tanzania. Also, the
truck is being purchased directly from BEGECA,
a charity organization in Germany. Future assistance
to the Tanzanian mission will require signed
agreements. The funds which are being disbursed
come from donations received in the past year
or so from bequests and donations received by
Resurrectionist Missions and can be used only
for the missions. The trip to Bolivia was financed
from these funds.
Charitable Donations Committee
This new standing committee began its
mandate on January 1, 2009. The members of
the Charitable Donations Committee are Charlie
Fedy, Lloyd Michaud and Phil Reilly. Their mandate
is to review requests that organizations make
to the Congregation for donations and then make
recommendations to the provincial council for
decision making. The criteria used by this committee
will be based on the criteria established by
the Canadian Religious Conference which helps
to guide religious congregations make the most
appropriate donations.
Living the Mission
Ed Hohenadel, Dan Lobsinger and Phil
Reilly are to be commended for responding enthusiastically
to their ongoing formation by participating
in the Resurrectionist Renewal Program
this past summer. Here is a summary, written by
Dan Lobsinger, of their process of personal and
communal renewal for the sake of the mission.
Ed Hohenadel, Phil Reilly and Dan Lobsinger visiting St.
Paul Outside the Walls Church
This past summer, from July 7th to 25th,
three members of the Ontario-Kentucky province,
Dan Lobsinger, Ed Hohenadel and Phil
Reilly participated in the Resurrectionist Renewal
program in Rome at the Generalate.
They were joined by four members of the
U.S.A. province: Marcelo de JesuMaria, Gerry
Watt, Ed Howe and Chris Trimpe; four members
of the Polish province: Adam Blyszcz, Zdzislaw
Korcz, Kazimierz Linkiewicz and Andrew Duda;
and one member of the Brazilian Region: Paulo
Solak.
The entire program blended various presentations
on areas of Religious life with the
visiting of various sites where the first Resurrectionists
began their communal and ministerial
presence in Rome. Each of us also had free time
to engage in travel both in Rome and outside
Rome.
The presentations that were offered by
various members of our three provinces included
the life and spirituality of our founder, Bogdan
Janski and co-founders, Peter Semenenko and
Jerome Kajsiewicz. We were also enlightened
with such topics as the virtue of Hope, Religious
vows, Prayer, Community, On-going formation,
qualities of spiritual leadership and a brief presentation
on the history of our three provinces,
one region and mission in Tanzania.
The places that we visited that had an historical
connection to our Congregation included
such places as St. Claude Church (first Resurrectionist
parish in Rome), the Catacombs of St. Sebastian,
Basilica of St. Mary Major (first masses
of Frs. Semenenko and Kajsiewicz) and the first
communal house at Piazza Margani. We also visited
present members of our Congregation at the
parish in Pescara and the Resurrection Sisters at
their Generalate, where a museum contains holy
relics of Frs. Semenenko and Kajsiewicz.
Near the end the Renewal, the participants
and presenters spent two days on retreat at
our Shrine in Mentorella, reflecting on the ‘eight
principles of Resurrectionist Spirituality.’ We
were also given an historical tour of the Shrine.
We visited various holy places within and
outside Rome, including the Pantheon, Vatican
Gardens and offices, Sistine Chapel, St. Peter in
Chains and St. Paul Outside the Walls and the
Monastery in Subiaco. Some Resurrectionists
voluntarily traveled one weekend each to Assisi
and Florence as well.
In summary, we found this experience to
be very positive in many ways. First, that it gave
us an appreciation of our Congregation as truly
international. Wherever we are in the world, we
all carry that message of hope in God’s unconditional
love. Secondly, we were given a greater
appreciation of the rich history of our Congregation
and how it has continued to be renewed
through the giftedness of our men who presently
witness to the Resurrection.
Report of the Plenary Chapter
Steering Committee
(submitted by Dan Lobsinger, C.R.)
As the Chair of the 2010 Plenary Chapter
Steering Committee, I would like to thank all Superiors
of our local houses for their cooperation
and support in gathering the responses from the
reflection questions handed out last September.
The Plenary Chapter Steering Committee
met on January 9th, 2009 to discuss the responses
from each local house. We spent time personally
sharing our own reactions to the responses and
these were very positive, hopeful and encouraging
as well as sensing a healthy apprehension and
fear among the members of the province.
Included with this newsletter is a followup
letter, composed after our meeting of January
9th, that asks each local house to reflect prayerfully
on what issues you believe are of most importance
for the 2010 Plenary Chapter.
There will also be a mailing in regard
to your responses for the request of a change in
the dates of the Retreat and Chapter. After careful
thought, the Steering committee made a request
to the Provincial Council that the Retreat
take place from June 28th to July 2nd and the
Chapter take place from July 5th to July 9th. We
realize that these dates will not be suitable for all
members to attend. However, we believe that after
reviewing the feedback, these dates will best
enable as many members as possible to participate
without interfering with vacation plans and/
or apostolic commitments. We remind all members
of the province that this is a Plenary Chapter
which requires that all members be present
unless excused by the Provincial. This mandate
includes those members from other provinces
working within our jurisdiction.
The Plenary Chapter Steering Committee
asks all Superiors to ensure that your house
members have discussed the second mailing of
reflection questions and have them submitted to
John Cline by March 31st, 2009.
Change of Address
