CHiEF Mirroring
Failure protection through
CHiEF Mirroring
Automatic monitoring of all CHiEF systems at all locations.
Permanently takes over all functions of the CHiEF systems that are to be
monitored by the Hot Backup CHiEF systems.
Automatic switch on and continuous monitoring of a failed CHiEF system via
Backup CHiEF.
Very convenient, team-oriented alerts via phone, SMS, email, voice mail,
Netmessage, and soundcard.
 Cost-effective, flexible and ready-to-use.
For several years now, CHiEF has been successfully
deployed by many companies for monitoring and
automation of all host and server systems (z/OS,
MVS, OS/390, VM/VSE, OS/400, BS2000, OSD,
UNIX, LINUX, WIN NT/2000/XP, NETWARE, VAX,
etc.), individual application programs, Internet-based
systems (WEB shops, WEB servers, WEB pages and
In case of failure of CHiEF hardware or software,
CHiEF Mirroring automatically takes over the
complete functionality of the failed CHiEF system
on to another PC and continues monitoring via this
CHiEF Backup system.
The failed CHiEF instance may be either at the same
location or at a remote location.
CHiEF Mirroring
proxies, firewalls), SAP systems, SNMP-based
systems (hardware and software) and if required, for
alerting the concerned employees.
In addition, individual system states, exception and
failure messages, response time, etc. can be stored in
databases and then conveniently analyzed using the
CHiEF Analyser.
The CHiEF Supervisor Program permanently
checks the state of the monitored CHiEF systems
using a heartbeat via TCP/ IP and if necessary
switches on the corresponding CHiEF backup system.
In addition, it controls the data synchronization
between the production CHiEF systems and the
CHiEF backup systems.

CHiEF interacts with the systems that are being
monitored just like a competent user. All commands,
transactions, programs, etc. of the systems are
available. This, in turn, enables quick understanding
of the CHiEF application, short training and
implementation time, generally about 2 days and a
high level of acceptance by the employees.
Using the easy to learn CHiEF scripting language, the
users themselves decide, which events are to be
automated or which of them are to trigger alerts.
Generally, the convenient alerts are person, team or
shift oriented with acknowledgement by phone (incl.
voice output via individual *.wav files or direct text-tospeech),
mobile phones, SMS, Cityruf, email,
Netmessage, sound card, etc. All are, of course,
date/time dependent with different escalation levels.
For different service groups the database-oriented
Group Service Plan (GSP) with rights-based
management of persons, dates, etc. can also be
used.
Overall Functionality of CHiEF
Example: CHiEF Mirroring
CHiEF Mirroring
Example: CHiEF-Supervisor
The communication between CHiEF and the systems
that are to be monitored takes place agent-less via
TCP/IP.
Complete database functionality allows storing of
individual information in SQL databases and analysis
by the CHiEF Analyser InfoZoom or by any existing
reporting tools at a later date.
Safety features like CHiEF Mirroring and dynamic
Dial-out Management enable uninterrupted system
management even during failure of the CHiEF's
hardware and software.
The deployment of CHiEF leads to a significant
reduction in the employee's workload and to
increased productivity and safety of the monitored
systems.
The inexpensive CHiEF license offers a measurable
savings potential and realizes a quick ROI (Return on
Invest).
In this example, three CHiEF
instances are monitored.
The window "Datensicherung
(backup)" displays the state of
the individual functions taken
over by the production CHiEF
systems.
The window "Prüfen der Instanz
(checking the instance)" displays
among other things the
heartbeat (sign of life) of the
production systems using
colored graphs, i.e. when the
respective CHiEF instance has
last responded to a monitoring
request.
