2009–10 Giving Statistics<br />

In 2009-10, the <strong>Mount</strong> <strong>Mercy</strong> Fund raised $644,391, with an average alumni<br />

gift <strong>of</strong> $123.10. Since 2005, the <strong>Mount</strong> <strong>Mercy</strong> Fund has raised more than<br />

$3.8 million to directly help students and ensure the strength and growth<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Mount</strong> <strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>University</strong>. The Catholic and <strong>Mercy</strong> ideal <strong>of</strong> service to<br />

others is embodied in the compassionate way the <strong>Mount</strong> <strong>Mercy</strong> community<br />

contributes annually to the <strong>Mount</strong> <strong>Mercy</strong> Fund.<br />

<strong>Mount</strong> <strong>Mercy</strong> received five estate gifts, totaling $1,317,961. In accordance<br />

with the donor’s wishes, these funds were directed to scholarships, library<br />

support, and the <strong>Mount</strong> <strong>Mercy</strong> Fund. We thank these generous donors (see<br />

listing, page 25) who chose to leave a legacy at <strong>Mount</strong> <strong>Mercy</strong> by including<br />

the <strong>University</strong> in their estate plans.<br />

During <strong>Mount</strong> <strong>Mercy</strong>’s spring and fall phonathon campaigns this past year, more<br />

than 47 percent <strong>of</strong> the alumni reached participated with a pledge or gift to the<br />

<strong>Mount</strong> <strong>Mercy</strong> Fund. In total, the phonathon raised $180,890, with an additional<br />

$12,977 in matching gifts, from 1,619 <strong>Mount</strong> <strong>Mercy</strong> alumni and parents.<br />

Employee contributions to <strong>Mount</strong> <strong>Mercy</strong> are a true endorsement in the mission<br />

and promise <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mount</strong> <strong>Mercy</strong> — because they are made by the people who<br />

know the institution the best. This year a record 125 faculty and staff members<br />

— or 41 percent <strong>of</strong> all employees — made gifts to the <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Endowment $1,412,942 (50%)<br />

Alumni and friends found <strong>Mount</strong> <strong>Mercy</strong>’s online giving site a convenient<br />

way to make contributions to the <strong>Mount</strong> <strong>Mercy</strong> Fund and several endowed<br />

scholarships this year. Online contributions totaled $5,845 in 2009–10. It’s<br />

easy to make a gift online — just visit www.mtmercy.edu/giving.<br />

During the 2010 fiscal year, $35,344 was received from 38 companies<br />

through corporate matching gift programs (see listing on page 22). Matching<br />

gifts <strong>of</strong>ten are available to employees and their spouses, board members and<br />

retirees. Ask your Human Resources department if your employer <strong>of</strong>fers such<br />

a program, which can double or triple the impact <strong>of</strong> your gift.<br />

Eleven companies made in-kind gifts valued at $20,744 to <strong>Mount</strong> <strong>Mercy</strong> this<br />

past year. Many <strong>of</strong> these gifts assisted with construction-related expenses.<br />

Several <strong>of</strong> these generous companies have provided in-kind gifts to the<br />

<strong>University</strong> for more than a decade.<br />

Six families made gifts to <strong>Mount</strong> <strong>Mercy</strong> through donor-advised funds at the<br />

Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation. These contributions, totaling<br />

$115,848, provided funding for repairs to the Grotto, library acquisitions,<br />

scholarships, building projects and the <strong>Mount</strong> <strong>Mercy</strong> Fund.<br />

Three contributors chose to support <strong>Mount</strong> <strong>Mercy</strong> by directing their<br />

United Way gifts to the <strong>University</strong>. The <strong>Mount</strong> <strong>Mercy</strong> Fund and the s<strong>of</strong>tball<br />

program were the recipients <strong>of</strong> these donor designations, which provided<br />

more than $4,300 in support to the institution.<br />
