2009–10 Giving Statistics
In 2009-10, the Mount Mercy Fund raised $644,391, with an average alumni
gift of $123.10. Since 2005, the Mount Mercy Fund has raised more than
$3.8 million to directly help students and ensure the strength and growth
of Mount Mercy University. The Catholic and Mercy ideal of service to
others is embodied in the compassionate way the Mount Mercy community
contributes annually to the Mount Mercy Fund.
Mount Mercy received five estate gifts, totaling $1,317,961. In accordance
with the donor’s wishes, these funds were directed to scholarships, library
support, and the Mount Mercy Fund. We thank these generous donors (see
listing, page 25) who chose to leave a legacy at Mount Mercy by including
the University in their estate plans.

During Mount Mercy’s spring and fall phonathon campaigns this past year, more
than 47 percent of the alumni reached participated with a pledge or gift to the
Mount Mercy Fund. In total, the phonathon raised $180,890, with an additional
$12,977 in matching gifts, from 1,619 Mount Mercy alumni and parents.
Employee contributions to Mount Mercy are a true endorsement in the mission
and promise of Mount Mercy — because they are made by the people who
know the institution the best. This year a record 125 faculty and staff members
— or 41 percent of all employees — made gifts to the University.

Alumni and friends found Mount Mercy’s online giving site a convenient
way to make contributions to the Mount Mercy Fund and several endowed
scholarships this year. Online contributions totaled $5,845 in 2009–10. It’s
easy to make a gift online — just visit www.mtmercy.edu/giving.
During the 2010 fiscal year, $35,344 was received from 38 companies
through corporate matching gift programs (see listing on page 22). Matching
gifts often are available to employees and their spouses, board members and
retirees. Ask your Human Resources department if your employer offers such
a program, which can double or triple the impact of your gift.

Eleven companies made in-kind gifts valued at $20,744 to Mount Mercy this
past year. Many of these gifts assisted with construction-related expenses.
Several of these generous companies have provided in-kind gifts to the
University for more than a decade.
Six families made gifts to Mount Mercy through donor-advised funds at the
Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation. These contributions, totaling
$115,848, provided funding for repairs to the Grotto, library acquisitions,
scholarships, building projects and the Mount Mercy Fund.
Three contributors chose to support Mount Mercy by directing their
United Way gifts to the University. The Mount Mercy Fund and the softball
program were the recipients of these donor designations, which provided
more than $4,300 in support to the institution.
