Curriculum 

At Riverside Distance Education we work in partnership with families and governing bodies to 

ensure that our Home-Schooling students are provided with the most suitable personalised 

educational pathways. 

Riverside Distance Education is also working on ensuring that our academic programs meet 

the requirements of the Queensland Studies Authority (QSA) and we are currently working on 

aligning our academic program (educational pathways) to the Australian Curriculum from a 

Biblical worldview.

Graduating Riverside Distance Education students, upon successful completion of their 

program (QCE Pathway), will not only receive a Riverside Christian College Certificate but will 

also receive a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). The QCE will assist young people 

in furthering their educational and vocational opportunities within Australia and internationally. 

Riverside Distance Education is divided up into three sectors; Junior College, Middle College 

Distance Education Head 


and Senior College.

Prep 

Putting the pieces together 

Riverside Distance Education Prep Program provides learning experiences which encourage 

exploration. Children are provided with the opportunity to participate in an activity rich 

program that is planned, inviting, encouraging and challenging. The program encourages 

children to work independently, to make choices, promotes their ability to solve problems and 

to follow ideas through to completion. It values creative learning, encourages curiosity and 

allows the students to work at their own pace. 

Our curriculum planning allows tutors to adapt to the individual learning needs of our students, 

while ensuring that all curriculum expectations are met. Inherent in this philosophy is the 

integration of all curriculum areas so that students are ready to move into year one well 

prepared and confident.

philosophy and weaves it throughout 

the program so that children receive 

solid Christian teaching within a high 

quality educational program.

Junior College (P - Y5) 

At Riverside Distance Education, Primary School curriculum is drawn from the 

Queensland Studies Authority core learning outcomes for Years 1-10, the Essential 

Learnings and the Early Years Curriculum Guidelines and is currently being rewritten to 

comply with the Australian curriculum outcomes. 

Students are engaged in meaningful, stimulating learning designed to cater for their 

diverse needs, with integrated, well planned programs designed by year level teams in

consultation with specialist teachers. Teachers, in consultation with our Home-Schooling 

families and governing bodies, use a variety of resources to design individual learning 

pathways with a variety of resources such as ACE, Maths-U-See, LLATL and ABEKA. 

Riverside is also currently drafting new educational pathways which will align with the 

Australian Curriculum. These new pathways will provide our Home-Schooling families with 



individual flexibility and offer a variety of resources which will provide for our students a 

solid foundation for future studies. It is anticipated that Riverside Distance Education will

North Queensland Student

Middle College (Y6 - Y9) 

Students in the Middle Years at Riverside Distance Education are given opportunities to 

experience the full range of subjects across the curriculum. During this phase of 

learning, students build on their primary education and start to explore other subject 

areas through a variety of resources such as ACE, ABEKA, LLATL, Maths-U-See, as 

well as online learning. Students are able to identify areas of strengths and interest and 

work towards an understanding of subjects which they might like to explore in their final 

phase of secondary education.

During this stage of their education Riverside Distance Education students are 

introduced to more online learning and they are also provided with increased face time 

with the teacher as their studies become more complex. Students enjoy this time 

immensely and enjoy the chance to interact with their teachers as well as engage with 

other Home-Schooling students. Various digital tools are used to assist Riverside 

Distance Education such as chat forums, blogs and web conferencing. The online 



learning component helps to prepare our Home-Schooling students for their final phase

To continue to offer a quality Christian education, Riverside Distance Education is 

currently drafting new academic programs consistent with the Australian Curriculum.

for this stage and we anticipate this work to be complete in 2012.

Abeka Science (Years 1-10) 

The hundreds of traditional Christian educational materials developed by Abeka Books have 

been developed and refined over a period of 50 years in the classroom. 

The Abeka Books approach to Christian education keeps learning lively, interesting, and 

memorable. The Abeka Book Science Programs presents the universe as the direct creation 

of God and refutes the man-made idea of evolution. Further, the books present God as the 

Great Designer and Lawgiver, without whom the evident design and laws of nature would be 

inexplicable. 

This curriculum consists of graded textbooks from Grades 1-10. They are well produced and 

in full colour. Every year of study builds upon the principles taught the previous year. Features 

of the curriculum spark student interest. The curriculum has a high academic standard. 

Parents use the text book to teach the subject. The students answer the end of review 

questions. Test booklets are separate.

The Abeka Book Science Series provides a solid foundation in science based soundly on the 

Word of God and Christian principles. The Abeka Book Health Series teaches students the 

wonders of the human body and encourages them to establish good health practices which 

affect total wellness.

Senior College (Y10-12)

Year 10 begins a very important 

phase in a student’s academic 

career. During Year 10 a number of 

things need to take place to ensure 

that young people are on the best 

academic pathway suited for their 

preferred career or future studies. 

During Year 10 students need to be 

registered for a Learner Unique 

Identifier (LUI) number, complete a 

Senior Education Training Plan 

(SETP) and select their senior 

subjects. 

Our Distance Riverside Education Distance Head Education staff take care of all these details and we work closely with 


our Year 10 students to assist them during this transitional time. This process is a very important 

one as the correct selection of subjects at this stage will ensure that young people are provided

Riverside College Senior speciality teachers deliver the senior subjects and use mostly online 

teaching methods such as Podcasting, Vodcasting, Webinnars, Discussion Forums, Blogs and 

Wikis. The students access their school work through a virtual classroom where they interact 

with their distance education students as well as Riverside College campus students. One of the 

most engaging methods our students enjoy is the live web casting which is done directly from 

our day school classes. this provides an authentic class experience and an opportunity for 

important socialisation throughout the learning experience. 

At Riverside Distance Education we offer 

Queensland Studies Authority (QSA) 

approved programs. 

This means that our students will be 

enrolled with the QSA for a learning 

account and our teachers will negotiate 

with students a senior academic pathway 

that will, upon successful completion, 

qualify them for a Queensland Certificate 

of Education (QCE).

Riverside Distance Education is always adding more subjects to our offerings and 

students on the OP track can expect to choose from subjects such as:

Each year Riverside adds more and more SAS, Cert and OP subjects. Students can also 

include other practical subjects from local Registered Training Organisations such as TAFE as a 

part of their senior subjects

Senior College 

University Direct Pathway 

This academic option is one of the most exciting options for young people today. If a student 

enrols in full-time senior studies, they are able to take, as a part of their senior work load, 

university subjects. Students who pass all their subjects and who pass at least one university 

subject and who get a passing grade in all four semesters of Years 11 & 12 in OP English will 

be guaranteed placement within USQ. (this example is based on USQ’s Head Start Program 

and is subject to change).

students to check with their university of choice in regards to participation with this type of 

program, prerequisite of guaranteed entry and other prerequisites which must be undertaken 

during Years 11 & 12 such as Maths B.

Traditional Booklet Pathway 

This option is designed for students who choose to continue with Pace book learning with 

resources such as ACE, Maths-U-See and LLATL. 

Presently, Riverside is seeking approval from the Queensland Studies Authority for a QCE 

approved Pace book pathway which upon successful completion will qualify a student for a 

QCE. 

Students doing the traditional booklet pathway will also have to sit the SAT test for university 

consideration. Students will need to enrol at a university as a non-Year 12 entry using the 

SAT test to gain an OP for eligibility into a program. Parents and students are advised to 

check university prerequisites before committing to this pathway. Many of our past 

students have successfully earned University Placement with this pathway.

Queensland Fees 

Riverside Christian College Distance Education aims to make quality education as affordable and 

accessible as possible for all families who choose this type of education for their children. The total cost 

incurred by families is made up of Tuition Fees, Enrolment Fee, Curriculum Costs and Bonds. Parents are 

encouraged to make smaller regular payments by internet banking (BSB: 034128, Account number: 

185492, Account name: Maryborough Christian Education Foundation Ltd), credit card or EFTPOS. 

Tuition fees are charged per term to families. Please refer to the table below for the annual amount as well 

as the per term amount.

At this time Riverside does not operate a Textbook Hire Scheme for these year levels. It is anticipated that in 

the near future the Scheme will also cover these years for students undertaking a QSA programme. 

Additional Costs 

Year 11/12: Some OP/SAS subjects may require students to purchase additional supplies such as Art 

materials and Science experiment items. These costs are expected to be minimal. 

Year 1-10: Curriculum such as ACE, Abeka. LLATL and Math U See are purchased by families. Please contact 

the College for more information. 

Camps 

The Distance Education Unit of Riverside holds camps at various venues within Queensland either once or

This year Riverside 

Distance Administration Education went to 


Emu Gully for their annual 


camp. It was an outstanding 

camp and the students had 

a ball. The camp’s focus 

was personal character 

building in a team context. 

The students had to work 

together and support each 

other to complete some 

really difficult tasks. The DE 

students did an outstanding 

job of working together as a 

team and the camp 

organisers said they were 

“the best team they have 

had in 15 years”. We 

believe that opportunities 

like camps provide a rich 

learning experience for our 

students and we encourage 

all our students to come 

along to our camps.

Throughout the year Riverside Distance Education 

provides for our Home-Schooling families, special 

workshop days in various locations. 

In Term 2, 2010 we had a field day at Kingaroy where 

we were joined with many of our families and students. 

During the day we provided the students with a special 

rotation of activities of Music, Art, Science and Literacy. 

During the day while the children moved from group to 

group, the parents and carers had their own session 

with our Head of Distance Education where they 

discussed a variety of relevant issues. 

The field days are great opportunities for teachers to 

spend time with their students and it also provides the 

students with some specialty workshops like Music, Art 

and Dance.
