Forest Solutions
for a Sustainable Future
Dato’ Dr Dionysius S.K. Sharma
Executive Director/CEO
WWF-Malaysia

Our ‘Ecological
Footprint’ - has
doubled since 1966.

Every year, the world’s population consumes the
resource of nearly 1.25 planets.
By 2030 we’ll need the equivalent of two planets.

Our Carbon Footprint grows in tandem with our Ecological
Footprint, which leads to increased levels of global
warming leading to extreme climate change.
We must urgently reduce our Carbon Footprint.

WWF believes our
future lies in Green
Growth from within a
Green Economy.

Heart of Borneo

Heart of Borneo is an
area of 22 m hectares,
shared by the three
countries of Brunei
Darussalam, Indonesia
and Malaysia.

In 2007, the three governments signed the historic Heart of
Borneo Declaration to effectively manage forest resources
and create a network of protected areas.

South East Asia’s largest and oldest remaining transboundary
tropical rainforest.

It is a treasure trove of
biological diversity with an
average of 3 new species
discovered and described
every month over the past
15 years.
More than 200 new
species have been
discovered since the
Declaration was signed in
2007!

It is one of only two places on earth where the critically
endangered Sumatran Rhino, the Orangutan and Elephant
can still be found across a large island landscape.

Catchment area for 14 out of
Borneo’s 20 major rivers.

With over 40% land utilized within HoB, the private sector
plays a key role in delivering the vision of the Heart of
Borneo (HoB) Declaration.

WWF’s Heart of Borneo Initiative worked with the
International consultancy,
to produce the Green Business Network Report.

The report surveyed 80
companies in Borneo
Only 54% of businesses
had heard about the Heart
of Borneo Declaration.
Businesses saw benefits in
sustainability, such as
better risk management
and increased revenue
opportunities.

But there were barriers to operating
sustainably:
– low awareness
– inadequate technical capacity
– lack of financial incentives
– lack of enforcement of environmental
regulation
