<strong>Sabah</strong> <strong>Forest</strong>ry Department<strong>Mangrove</strong> Replanting Program In Kota Belud (2008)In Kota Belud, the replanting program was carried out onan area of 8.86 ha inside Abai <strong>Forest</strong> Reserve. A total of5,000 mangrove propagules of Rhizophora apiculata wereplanted. The planting distance adopted was 2m x 2m. Itwas observed that the main obstacle for the replantingeffort in Abai was the water depth.<strong>Mangrove</strong> seedlings planted at Abai FR<strong>Mangrove</strong> seedlings planted at Padas Damit FRTransportation of seedlings to planting site<strong>Mangrove</strong> Replanting Program in Beaufort (2008)In Beaufort, an area of 26.268 ha had been identifi ed as the projectsite. Thesurvival rate observed was 75%. Replanting (or the beating upprocedure) was carried out by an appointed contractor. The planting site is located at thePalm Oil Industrial Cluster (POIC), Lahad Datu. Seedlingsused were Bakau Kurap (Rhizophora mucronata) andBakau Minyak (Rhizophora apiculata) with planting distanceof 3m x 3m.Students taking part in the planting activity<strong>Mangrove</strong> Replanting Program in Kunak (2008)In Kunak, encroachment is the most serious threat to themangroves with not less than one thousand hectareshaving been degraded due to conversion to illegal oil palmand illegal shrimp ponds. <strong>Sabah</strong> <strong>Forest</strong>ry DepartmentPlanting site at Bergosong, Pulau SebatikReplacement of dead seedlings being carried out by SFD’s staffat Pulau Sebatik<strong>Mangrove</strong> Replanting Program in Tawau (2008)At Tawau <strong>Forest</strong> Reserve in Pulau Sebatik, the plantingdistance used was 2m x 2m and 3m x 3m covering a totalarea of 26.33 ha. A total of 50,000 mangrove propaguleswere planted. The replanting works were carried out by theappointed contractor under the supervision of SFD staff.Bakau Kurap (Rhizophora mucronata) and Bakau Minyak(Rhizophora apiculata) were used as planting materials.However, due to the strong winds and big waves, 70% ofthe newly planted seedlings perished. A replacement ofplanting material was carried out and it was found out thatthere is a need to review the present planting techniqueand approach used in the previous exercise. It is also notedthat several parts of this forest reserve had previouslybeen illegally encroached for oil palm cultivation. Efforts toreplant other illegally encroached areas in Pulau Sebatikwill be carried in the future.Periodic checking of replanted mangroves at Sg. Burung, Tawau FR<strong>Mangrove</strong> Replanting In Kota Kinabalu (2008)In Kota Kinabalu, two locations of 6.42 ha were identifi ed andreplanted with mangrove seedlings at Sulaman Lake <strong>Forest</strong>Reserve.
