3.2 ENERGY
Sector Summary
India stands 11 th in terms of production of energy, and 4th largest energy consumer after China,
USA and Russia. It will become third largest consumer by 2020. With an installed power capacity
of 248,509.63 MW as per May 2014 38 , India has 4% of the global capacity. In the past, the Indian
power sector has been driven by fossil fuel power, predominantly coal. Renewable energy is fast
emerging as a major source of power. Wind energy is the largest source of renewable energy in
India accounting for an estimated 87% of total installed capacity in renewable energy. The country
aims to increase the importance of wind power even further; there are plans to double wind power
generation capacity to 20 GW by 2022 39 . Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission launched in 2010,
the first phase of which added 1,684 MW of grid-connected solar power. The mission aims to add
20 GW grid-connected solar power to India’s energy mix by 2022 40 . Biomass is the second largest
source of renewable energy, accounting for 12% of total installed capacity in renewable energy, and
solar energy accounts for 1% of total renewable energy installed capacity. However, the share is
not indicative of the country’s true potential, which stands at an estimated 5,000 TWh per annum. 41
