A WORD FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Volume: 1, Issue 1 2014 2 Editorial ED Speaks out Monica Nadiope Executive Director It has been six months since I took office at UNADP as the Execuve Director. I want to thank God who has made it possible and I want to thank UNAPD Board of Directors who had trust in me and have given me the responsibility to work with a team of energec men and women.I want to take this opportunity to welcome all project Staff who have joined the team. These few months have been rigorous but we have managed it well and am happy to announce that we have moved on in a posive direcon and recorded a number of achievements. On behalf of the secretariat, I want to thank the board for the support they have given whenever called upon to give direcon and guidance to UNAPD. I want to inform you that we have managed to do a commendable job in terms of project implementaon: We launched a number of projects namely; Capacity Building and Sustainable Development Project (CBSDP), Sports Project at Chieaincy Mubende Rehabilitaon Center (CMRC) as well as the Disability Rights Fund Project(DRF). We started work in the project communies, districts, and are networking with like-minded partners in advocang for an accessible environment that brings joy to all cizens of Uganda including those with disability. This year, we have on board the CBSD Project which brings a unique mix of experse from partner organizaons namely Spinal Injury Associaon (SIA), Brain Injury Support Organizaon of Uganda (BISOU), and Uganda Paralympics Commiee (UPC) all working together in 16 districts. We want to thank our Partners who make this possible and make sure that persons with disabilies are accorded their human rights and to all readers that this informaon makes a difference in your lives. It has been a while without an offi cial communication to our esteemed readers, partners, stakeholders and members on the updates at Uganda National Action on Physical Disability (UNAPD) and our partners while reaching you using our most beloved Newsletter “the UNAPD UPDATE”.A lot has happened since the beginning of the year, and this is an optune time to update you all on what has transpired since January, 2014 and also give you updates of the upcoming events. We are blessed with new projects, board and staff on board. This brings together a breadth of new ideas as well as partnerships that will make implementation a success. We thank our local partners, DPOs, donors especially Danish Handicap Forbund (DHF), Disability Sports Organization Denmark (DSOD), and Danish Brain Injury Association in Denmark (DBIA) for the support that enables us reach our readers and those attributions made to make this Newsletter. Volume: 1, Issue 1 2014 3 A WORD FROM THE CHAIRPERSON Arthur Blick Snr Chairperson UNAPD I want to take this opportunity UNAPD by end of 2013 was graced to welcome you as you read with a new four year project this news update. I want to which replaced the expired thank UNAPD memberships who Membership Empowerment elected us as new office bearers for the next 4years. We pledge to serve and take UNAPD to beer heights. Project implemented in 16 project districts of Uganda but almost different in composion, strategy and coverage. Last year, we saw a new board of Directors of UNAPD taking on offices. We have big plans looking at new intervenon, new experiences and new innovaons as we bring together all members from different floras to beer lives of persons with disabilies. We will connue to put in place programs that will connue to advocate for a society that accords equal rights to all cizens including those with disabilies. We want to thank the government of Uganda for the support and creang avenues as well as enabling environment to reach our own. It’s our pledge that we will develop and make this country a beer place to live in. In the new project UNAPD will be working with other sister organizaons for the next four years. This is a good thing to see member’s within the disability fraternity working together to beer lives of people with disability It is my sincere wish that all UNAPD members in various districts make it a point to ulize all opportunies that come by in an effecve and efficient manner. We can’t forget to thank our donors that make all things possible for people with disabilies to get informaon and knowledge. We all know that KNOWLEDGE is an avenue to power which is in our hands and if well ulized leads to a dignified life. Achievements of the New Board Since we took on office, we have a count of aainments especially now with a properly elected board. We see new people on board of directors and we have quite a competent team at the secretariat that does a lot of our program in me, We now have mely reporng to our donors, unlike before they used to complain a lot about no report and no accountability but all that is now in place. The donor are quite happy. The other achievement we have accorded is accessibility standards that were formulated by UNAPD with the help of Ministry of Gender and Social Development and all other stakeholders being recognized in the Building Control Act(2013) as a reference document for building construcon. We now look forward to the regulaon of the Act and its implementaon to also make reference to the accessibility standards. We now have recognion and membership in 40 districts of Uganda and have plans to reach more members to improve service delivery and a beer life for all. Mission: To remove barriers in society that prevents People with Physical Disabilities from enjoying full Rights on an equal basis with other citizens
