Eucharist beginning in the second grade. Classes are
part of the second-grade curriculum of Sacred Heart of
Jesus School and of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd.

advance of the proposed date.
Anointing of the Sick
Please call the Parish Center to request Anointing of the
Sick or to arrange for Communion to be brought to

A Letter from Our Pastor
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
This coming Friday is the annual celebration of the
Solemnity of the Sacred Heart. It is therefore also
our patronal feast as a parish named in honor of
this solemnity and of this devotion to the divine love
of God symbolized in the human heart of Jesus.
This image needs explanation in our day because
we think less and less in religious terms.
One day I was sitting on the front porch and
overheard some young (college-aged) people
walking in front of the church, and one of them,
seeing the name of the church, said, "Sacred Heart
of Jesus! How sick is that!?"
Wow, I thought, how far away they are from
understanding this beautiful image! And, how on
earth could they think of this as "sick"?
So, yes, in our increasingly de-sacralized society
religious terms need a lot of explanation.
When we all made a decision back about 5 years
ago to reject the offer we had been given to
relocate to Gunbarrel, we decided to remain in
downtown Boulder to be a light in the darkness and
to be the love of Christ in the heart of Boulder. It
seems that fewer and fewer people here know who
Jesus is. In fact, a Protestant minister friend of
mine said something very telling sometime after
arriving at his ministry here in town. I went to visit
him and inquired how he was doing. He said, "Well,
I found out that Jesus is not welcome in this town!"
That makes me all the more grateful to all of you,
for your fidelity, for your endurance, and for the
many ways you allow the Lord's grace to work
through you as a person of faith in Jesus Christ.
As our society becomes more and more "post-
Christian," the battle I face within myself is how to
deal with what feels like a massive loss of faith in
Jesus Christ. Sometimes I feel angry over it, but
what good does that do? Sometimes I feel
despairing of the future of the Church, but how can
I give in to that temptation?! Sometimes I simply
feel sad that so many do not know the love of God
in Christ Jesus and see no need for the
sacraments, but sadness is not a hallmark of the
Holy Spirit.
I think our parish's name, and the reality it points
to, can be a light in our own darkness. The Sacred
Heart of Jesus is all about Jesus, is all about love,
and is all about "the sacred." It does no good to be
anything but loving to those who do not know
Jesus. It does no good to be upset with those who
do not know the realm of "the sacred," i.e., the
world of God, the life of Christ, the Kingdom of
God, or heaven. All we can do is to be faithful to
the Lord who has so revealed Himself to us and to
love the people He puts in our path.
Furthermore, it does no good to expect those who
do not see our Christian view of life to somehow
"get it." It doesn't mean letting go of our values,
our principles, our dogmas, our morals, but it does
mean that we engage respectfully with those who
see life differently from us.
So, for us the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus,
here in the heart of Boulder, is to love as Christ
loves, to be faithful to Him and His Church in all
things, and to treat everyone as we would like
ourselves to be treated.

those in hospitals or nursing homes, to usher at
weekend Masses (something the family can do
together), to help plan and put on SHJ’s Wine &
Cheese Socials or the Family Pizza Nights, to make
sandwiches one day a week for clients of Boulder’s
Bridge House, to assist SHJ Food Pantry patrons
every other Tuesday, to lead Liturgy of the Word for
children during the 10 am Sunday Mass, to launder
altar linens for Masses, to greet newcomers after the
8 am or 10 am Sunday Mass, to wash kitchen towels
for the Parish Center, to make a difference at SHJ?

Carta de nuestro Pastor

Queridos hermanos y hermanas,
El próximo viernes es la celebración anual de la Solemnidad del Sagrado Corazón. Por lo tanto, también
es la fiesta patronal de nuestra parroquia, nombrada en honor a esta solemnidad, y devoción al amor divino
de Dios, simbolizado en el corazón humano de Jesús. Esta imagen requiere una explicación en nuestros
días, porque pensamos que cada vez menos en términos religiosos.
Un día estaba yo sentado en el porche frente a la casa y escuché a algunos jóvenes universitarios, gente
que camina delante de la iglesia, y uno de ellos, al ver el nombre de la iglesia, dijo: "Sagrado Corazón de
Jesús!?Que loco es eso! "
Vaya, pensé, qué tan lejos están de comprender esta bella imagen! Y, ¿cómo es posible que puedan
pensar en esto como "loco"?
Así que, sí, cada vez más la sociedad se ha desacralizado y los términos religiosos necesitan mucha
explicación.
Cuando tomamos la decisión hace unos 5 años atrás de rechazar la oferta que nos habían ofrecido a
trasladarnos a Gunbarrel, decidimos permanecer en el centro de Boulder para ser una luz en la oscuridad y de
ser el amor de Cristo en el corazón de Boulder . Parece que cada vez menos gente aquí sabe quién es Jesús. De
hecho, un amigo mio pastor dijo algo muy revelador en algún momento después de llegar a su ministerio aquí
en la ciudad. Fui a visitarlo y le preguntó cómo estaba. Él dijo: "Bueno, me enteré de que Jesús no es bienvenido
en esta ciudad!"
Me hace sentir mas agradecido con ustedes, por su fidelidad, por su resistencia, y por las muchas maneras
que permiten que la gracia del Señor trabaje a través de ti como una persona de la Fe en Jesucristo.
A medida que nuestra sociedad se vuelva más y más "post-cristiana", la batalla que se enfrenta dentro
de mí es cómo tratar el sentir la pérdida masiva de la Fe en Jesucristo. A veces me siento enojado por ello, pero
¿Qué de bueno tiene ello? A veces me siento desesperado por el futuro de la Iglesia, pero ¿cómo puedo ceder
a esa tentación? A veces simplemente me siento triste de que muchos no conocen el amor de Dios en Cristo
Jesús y no ven la necesidad de los sacramentos, pero la tristeza no es un sello del Espíritu .
Creo que el nombre de nuestra parroquia, y la realidad que apunta, puede ser una luz en nuestra propia
oscuridad. El Sagrado Corazón de Jesús es todo acerca de Jesús, es todo sobre el amor, y es todo acerca de "lo
sagrado". Nada es mas bueno que amar a aquellos que no conocen a Jesús. No es bueno estar molesto con
aquellos que no conocen el reino de "lo sagrado", es decir, el mundo de Dios, la vida de Cristo, el Reino de
Dios, o el cielo. Todo lo que podemos hacer es ser fieles al Señor por lo que ha revelado a Sí mismo a
nosotros y amar a las personas que Él pone en nuestro camino.
Por otra parte, no hace ningún bien a esperar que quienes no ven nuestra visión cristiana de la vida
cristiana y que de alguna manera "lo hagan." Esto no significa dejar ir nuestros valores, nuestros principios,
nuestros dogmas, nuestras costumbres, pero sí quiere decir que seamos respetuosos con los que ven la vida
diferente a nosotros.
Por lo tanto, para nosotros la imagen del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, aquí en el corazón de Boulder, es
amar como Cristo ama, para ser fieles a Él y a su Iglesia en todas las cosas, y tratar a todos como nos gustaría
a nosotros mismos para ser tratada. Feliz fiesta. Dios los bendiga,

Yo soy el Pan de Vida
Intenciones del Papa, para Junio 2012
General: Cristo presente en la Eucaristia: Para que los
creyentes sepan reconocer en la Eucaristia la presencia viva
del Resucitado, que les acompaña en la vida cotidiana.

“Este es mi
Cuerpo, esta
es mi Sangre”
El primer día de la fiesta de los panes Ácimos,
cuando se inmolaba la víctima pascual,
los discípulos dijeron a Jesús: ¿Dónde
quieres que vayamos a prepararte la
comida pascual?" El envió a dos de sus
discípulos, diciéndoles: "Vayan a la ciudad;
allí se encontrarán con un hombre que lleva
un cántaro de agua. Síganlo, y díganle al
dueño de la casa donde entre: El Maestro
dice: '¿Dónde está mi sala, en la que voy a
comer el cordero pascual con mis discípulos?'.
El les mostrará en el piso alto una
pieza grande, arreglada con almohadones
y ya dispuesta; prepárennos allí lo necesario".
Los discípulos partieron y, al llegar a la
ciudad, encontraron todo como Jesús les
había dicho y prepararon la Pascua.
Mientras comían, Jesús tomó el pan, pronunció
la bendición, lo partió y lo dio a sus
discípulos, diciendo: "Tomen, esto es mi
Cuerpo". Después tomó una copa, dio
gracias y se la entregó, y todos bebieron
de ella. Y les dijo: "Esta es mi Sangre, la
Sangre de la Alianza, que se derrama por
muchos. Les aseguro que no beberé más
del fruto de la vid hasta el día en que beba
el vino nuevo en el Reino de Dios".
Después del canto de los Salmos, salieron
hacia el monte de los Olivos.
Para que los cristianos en Europa redescubran la propia
identidad y participen con mayor empeño en el anuncio del
evangelio.
