Heimsækið Fljótsdal Lagarfljótshringurinn er skemmtileg dagsferð frá Egilsstöðum. Fyrst er stoppað í Hallormsstaðaskógi þar sem hægt er að skoða Trjásafnið, eða fylgja fjölmörgum merktum gönguleiðum. Á Skriðuklaustri sem er byggt af Gunnari Gunnsrssyni má síðan njóta sýninga, kynnast lífi rithöfundarins, skoða fornleifauppgröft eða bara njóta margrómaðra veitinga. Heimsækið Valþjófsstaðarkirkju þar sem útskornar kirkjudyrnar eru nákvæm eftirlíking þeirrar sem nú er á Þjóðminjasafninu. Haldið áfram og keyrið að Hengifossi sem er þriðji hæsti foss landsins 120 metra hár sem fellur niður í basalt gil. Gangan þangað er frekar auðveld og stutt og þar blasir jarðsagan við í sýnilegum jarðlögum. Það eru víða fallegir staðir við Fljótið en stansið við minnismerki um Jóhann Magnús Bjarnason rithöfund. Það er staðsett á víðsýnum stað í Fellum og á góðum degi sést til jökuls. Það er aldrei að vita nema þið sjáið Orminn sem er sagt að búi djúpt ofan í Lagarfljótinu. Þegar komið er til Egilsstaða aftur er tilvalið að fara á Minjasafn Austurlands sem er vel útbúið safn, eða líta á eina af mörgum sýningum Sláturhússins eða Gallerý Bláskjás. Visiting Fljótsdalur It is an interesting day excursion to drive the so called Lagarfljót circle and make the forest Hallormsstaðaskógur your first stop. Once there you can walk around the forest on marked paths and see the Trjásjafnið. Continue your drive onwards toward the mansion Skriðuklaustur that was built by the writer and poet Gunnar Gunnarsson. Skriðuklaustur is an architecturally unique house and there you can learn about the life of Gunnar Gunnarsson or enjoy the delicious refreshments on offer. Visit the church, Valþjófsstaður and notice the ancient carved door which is a replica of the original one which is kept at the National Museum in Reykjavik. As you continue on deeper into the valley, you cannot miss seeing the third highest waterfall in the country; Hengifoss. The walk up to Hengifoss is both short and easy and on the way you can clearly see the different sedimentary strata. Along the Lagarfljot river there are a number of interesting places to visit. You can for example stop at the memorial to the writer Jóhann Bjarnason. The monument is located at a great looking point, and on a good day you can see the glacier. Perhaps you will see the Lagarfljótsormur, which is a large worm that the locals say lives in the river. When you arrive again in Egilsstaðir it is well worth it to take the time and take in the Austurland Museum, go to one of the many shows at the Sláturhúsið (the Slaughterhouse) or go to Gallery Bláskjár. In Egilsstaðir and the surrounding region there are a number of good restaurants and reindeer is often on the menu. If you wish to go on a hiking trip you can find information on the trips that the local Hiking Club (Ferðafélag Fljótsdalshéraðs) has planned at the Tourist Information Centre in Egilsstaðir. 51
