by conformity with the image of the Crucified. 173 To suffer<br />

with Christ, is to share in his glory as well. That is<br />

why the sorrowful meditation on the passion is changed<br />

to the joy of celestial consolation when Christ’s glory is<br />

revealed. 174<br />

In the remaining Sundays of the liturgical year, Bonaventure<br />

accentuates for his confreres the salvific memory<br />

of the passion, particularly evident in the preaching<br />

and sacramental mission of the Church. In On Pentecost,<br />

Bonaventure integrates the passion into the evangelical<br />

preaching of the apostles. The outpouring of the Holy Spirit<br />

gifts them with divine eloquence to proclaim the glory<br />

of God initiated in the incarnation, continued without<br />

diminution in the passion, and experienced in the reception<br />

of the Spirit. 175 Images of Christ as banquet host, 176<br />

physician, 177 administrator, 178 and woman in search of<br />

a lost drachma 179 reinforce the goodness of salvation offered<br />

by Christ through his weakened body and soul in<br />

the passion. 180 Battered by suffering and stripped of everything<br />

on the cross, the nude Christ is the memorable<br />

exemplar for evangelical poverty. 181 Quoting 1 Peter 2:21<br />

in the Fourth Sunday after Pentecost, Bonaventure writes,<br />

“Whence Christ suffered for us, leaving you an example<br />

that you may follow in his steps. Oh sweetest word, what<br />

truest word, worthy or all remembrance and praise!” 182<br />
