WELCOME TO KAIKOURA 

Within the Kaikoura District, you will experience some of the most 

breathtaking scenery in the country with a stunning coastline, a dramatic 

peninsula and some of the South Island’s highest mountains. A unique

life including seals, dolphins, whales and albatross. Kaikoura enjoys an

GREAT LOCATION, SO EASY TO VISIT 

Kaikoura is the most 

northern district in 

the Canterbury region 

located on the east 

coast of the South 

Island. Kaikoura is a 

comfortable 2.5 hour 

drive north from 

Christchurch, 1.5 

hours from central 

Marlborough and only 

2 hours from Picton – 

gateway to Wellington 

and the North Island. 

Kaikoura lies on the 

main highway through 

the South Island, 

State Highway 1. 

Kaikoura has excellent 

transport links. Travelling 

north, daily bus services 

link Kaikoura with 

Marlborough and further west to the Tasman region. Travelling south, 

daily bus services link Kaikoura with Christchurch and on to the rest 

of the South Island. The TranzCoastal rail service links Christchurch, 

Kaikoura and Picton. Within the Kaikoura township, there is a local 

shuttle service. Many activity operators and accommodation businesses 

offer pick-up services. The town centre is compact with many of the 

tour operators, accommodation and services all in easy walking distance.

KAIKOURA - A YEAR-ROUND DESTINATION 

Kaikoura has a rich history 

and culture which can still be 

experienced and enjoyed today. 

Maori heritage is reflected in the 

name Kaikoura. Tama ki Te Rangi 

arrived in the area many hundreds 

of years ago and was tired and 

hungry. He found an abundance 

of crayfish and named the area 

“Te Ahi Kaikoura a Tama Ki Te 

Rangi” - the fire that cooked the 

crayfish of Tama ki Te Rangi. 

European history can be traced 

back to 1770 when Captain 

Cook first mapped the Kaikoura 

peninsula. The first shore whaling 

station was established here in 

1843. Visit the museum and 

historic buildings or take a 

Maori cultural experience. 

Kaikoura’s coastal waters are 

home to an amazing array of 

marine mammals and birdlife 

making Kaikoura the perfect 

destination for marine experiences 

all year round. Perhaps the most 

famous residents are the sperm 

whales who share this part 

of the Pacific Ocean with 

dusky dolphins, fur seals and 

albatross - to name but a few. 

Migrating species such as the 

rare Hector’s dolphins, humpback 

whales and orca visit throughout 

the year. View marine life from a 

boat, plane or helicopter or get 

even closer by swimming with 

seals or dolphins in their ocean 

playground. Experience some 

excellent diving sites and surf 

breaks or explore the coast 

by kayak.

With the tallest mountains on the 

east coast as a backdrop, Kaikoura 

is an inspiring location offering 

fantastic land-based activities 

ranging from the energetic to 

the relaxing. 

Go quad biking, river rafting or 

take a ride on the mountain 

luge. Explore the countryside on 

horseback or visit the farm parks. 

Hire a bicycle and explore at your 

own pace. Visit the winery, stroll 

through the lavender farm or treat 

yourself at the day spa. 

If you enjoy walking and hiking, 

you will find plenty of options 

ranging from short strolls to 

multi-day hikes. There are also 

several guided walk options 

including multi-day hikes 

with accommodation. For real 

exhilaration in the skies above 

Kaikoura, try skydiving or pilot 

your own plane!

KAIKOURA - A UNIQUE ENVIRONMENT 

Such a special place deserves 

special care and protection to 

ensure it can be enjoyed 

by residents and visitors now 

and in the future. For several 

years, Kaikoura District Council 

and the Kaikoura community 

have been involved with the 

‘Green Globe’ programme - 

an environmental management 

scheme for tourism destinations 

and businesses. In 2004, Kaikoura 

District became the first local 

authority to achieve Community 

Environmental Certification under 

this programme. 

What does 

Green Globe 

involve? 

A series of 

indicators are 

used to measure 

environmental impacts in Kaikoura 

in areas such as air quality, 

greenhouse gas production, water 

consumption and energy use. 

Careful monitoring, planning and 

the introduction of innovative 

strategies are used to reduce 

impacts such as greenhouse 

gas production and to improve 

quality such as air and water. 

An independent audit annually 

assesses these measures to ensure 

that progress is being made. 

What else does Council do 

to protect the environment? 

Here are just a couple 

of examples: 

Zero Waste programme - 

aiming for zero waste in the 

landfill by 2015. 

Significant Natural Areas 

Programme - private landowners 

in the District are encouraged to 

rejuvenate and protect areas rich 

in native plants and wildlife.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP? 

Everyone in Kaikoura is asked to 

recycle. Think about packaging 

when purchasing items and take 

the time to find out how much 

can be recycled here - all plastics, 

cans, paper, food, baby diapers 

and so much more. Use our 

public recycling stations or visit 

our Recycling Centre if you are 

not sure. Refer to the map (p8) 

for recycling locations. 

Remember to reduce, reuse and 

recycle. Switch off lights when 

not needed, conserve water, hire 

a bike or walk rather than use 

the car. Support our campaign to 

reduce the use of plastics and buy 

one of our ‘Fantastic! No plastic’ 

eco bags. 

As you travel around the 

township, the countryside, the 

coastline and other more remote 

parts of the District, please do not 

leave litter or waste of any kind. 

Enjoy the natural environment but 

please do not spoil it.

View the Sperm Whales of Kaikoura from a bird’s eye perspective. 

Wings over Whales offers a spectacular 30 minute scenic flight from 

Kaikoura Airport. 

The flight has a 98% chance of spotting a whale, dolphins and seals are
