FIS Students at Work and Play
FIS students have been
busy this winter. It appears
that spring will be just as
busy.
December 3, winners of
classroom spelling bees
met to determine the four
placers at FIS. Emylee
Stringfield, Derek
Funk, Nikolai Tolmoff,
and Mikaela Graf were
the top four spellers at FIS.
Emylee, Derek, and Nikolai
represented us at the City
Spelling Bee Jan. 25. Nikolai
spelled his way to third
place. These students
worked really hard to outspell
620 other students!
FIS has 3 Destination Imagination
teams getting ready
for competition at Miami
University March 12.
Twenty-four more students
were inducted into the
National Elementary Honor
Society February 24.
All FIS students have been
participating in “Jump for
the Heart” during February,
Heart Month. Mrs.
Betsy Burns leads the students
in jumping rope many
ways—short ropes, double
Dutch, jump rope games,
contests, pogo sticks, pogo
balls. This provides a great
aerobic workout. This is
the 19th year Mrs. Burns
has supported this event.
Students acquire donations
for the American Heart
Association and the money
is sent to support the Association.
February 22, Mrs.
Burns hosted students for
two hours after who wanted
to jump for fun and
health. Parents were encouraged
to come to the
gymnasium to jump with
their child or to watch
their child jumping.
Mrs. Burns won $100 from
American Heart Association for
games.
Ms. Jamie Stockslager and her
students from the FIS Sign Language
Club performed the National
Anthem at the Skyhawks
Varsity game February 4. Very
impressive!!
Recess News
Whether or not to have outdoor recess is always the question this time of
year. After researching the topic, FIS has made this decision about outside
or inside recess.
If the playground is clear of snow, the temperature and/or the wind chill factor
is above 20˚, students will spend their 15 minute recess outdoors.
Please make certain your child is appropriately dressed for the weather by
wearing a warm coat, hat, and gloves.
Research does not support the idea that people become ill from being outside
in cold weather. People are more likely to experience illness if they
are inside a closed area with people who are ill.
A medical note from your child’s physician is needed for a student to remain
indoors during this 15 minutes.
On May 3, 2011, Fairborn voters will be voting on a very important ballot issue, a 7.9 mill operating levy
that funds day-to-day operations for Fairborn City Schools, teachers, textbooks, and technology. The
upcoming election is important for every Fairborn family.
Fairborn City Schools are excellent schools with quality teachers and academic programs. Please don’t
take this election lightly. Please register to vote! It is an important right and our children
need your help!
Put Fairborn Kids First!!
Each year Mrs. Brackenhoff and Mrs.
Tritsch encourage the students at FIS
to become better readers. Just like
with anything a person becomes good
at, there must be practice, practice,
practice. Last year the students read
3,173,605 minutes! Our challenge
this year is to read at least that number
of minutes and to try for a higher
goal of 3.5 million minutes!
The challenge is based on total
minutes read and the number of
participants in each classroom. We
hope that every child will participate.
Reading can take you to many places
you may never be able to actually
go and will inform you of many
things you need or want to
know.
As of January, the totals are
1,052,604 minutes in 4th
grade, 908,693 minutes in
5th grade. Ms. Miller’s class
read 4,379 minutes and Mr.
Webb’s class read 4,636
minutes for a comprehensive
total of 1,970,312
minutes. Only 1,529,688
minutes to go for 3.5 million
minutes !!
Students are encouraged to read
15-20 minutes each evening at
home. They should fill in their
reading log and have parents sign
it. When the log is turned in at
the end of each month, students
receive popcorn and a chance
for larger prizes at the end of
the year.
However, the largest prize that
the student wins is the ability to
read and comprehend better
because they practice. So remember
to READ! READ!

National Elementary Honor Society
Last month we reported the induction of 28 new members in the FIS membership of the National Elementary Honor Society. Honor
Society for Junior High and High School has been in existence for many years, but for Elementary students this was a first. It is
quite an honor for the students who participate. They have specific criteria they must meet to be considered for membership.
February 28, 2011, The National Elementary Honor Society inducted twenty-four new students into NEHS. They joined
the 50 existing members. Evidence of Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Responsibility are required of the members of
the Honor Society. Inductees must have been a student at FIS for at least one full semester and have earned at least a
3.0 GPA.
The ceremony was attended by the inductees, their families and friends. Dr. Brackenhoff, Mrs. Tritsch, Mrs. Henry, Mr.
Riley, Ms. Schnabel and Mr. Brunger wore the cap and gowns depicting their universities and the degrees they have
earned. The students lit candles and made their promises to work to uphold the values of the Honor Society and to
work diligently each year to maintain the quality required to earn the right to maintain their membership for the future.
It is very awe inspiring to see the excitement created by this evening. Congratulations!
New Inductees are: Conner Bowman, Jarod Bodekor, Isabelle Carone, Kensi Cheadle, Kelsie Coleman, Ned Dunbar,
Madyson Fagan, Robert Fitzgerald, Serena Ford, Derek Funk, Nicholas Greene, Taylor Hensley, Maddie Jones, Jocelyn
Kennedy, Gabrielle Kovachic, Trevor Landon, Brianna Mayfield, Joe Nickel, Travis Osborne, Adam Pelfrey, Bruce Pico,
Caleb Smith, Alicia Sylvester, and Mitchell Wagers.
Congratulations!
Brain power, imagination, and problem solving skills from FIS are about to take to the road.
Destination Imagination is designed to show how creative and skilled students can be at problem
solving. They are given a situation and must decide the best way to find and explain a solution.
Each team at FIS chose a situation and have been working on it since before Christmas.
Now, they are getting ready for the completion. They will present the situation they
have been working on against other teams in their age group from all over southern Ohio.
They will also need to solve a situation in ten minutes as part of the competition at Miami University
on March 12.
FIS has formed three teams chosen from a group of over 125 students who auditioned for the
teams.
The team lead by Mr. Josh Steck includes Lauren Thomas, Sydney Steck, Brayden DeWall,
Kensi Cheadle, Joe Nickel, Matthew Hoffman, and Ned Dunbar.
Mrs. Pat Murakami’s and Mrs. Betsy Burns’ team members are Chynna Spitler, Emily
Howard, Brooke Mullins, Nicholas Greene, Jayden Brown, Isabella Carone and McKayla
Lyons.

Destination Imagination Teams to Compete at Miami University in March
One more team lead by Mrs. Jodi Henry and Ms. Pam Schnabel is made up of Caleb Meredith,
Jesse Tidwell, Tyler Barker, Mary Shaw, Maris Brewer, Troy Herald, and Chloe
Snyder.
Ms. Jen Higgins, Mr. Chris Robinson, and Mrs. Burns attended a meeting to be Appraisers for
the competition.
