John R. Howard, died unexpectcdly on<br />
Thursday. 2 1 July, 1988. After graduation<br />
from University of <strong>Texas</strong> School of <strong>Law</strong>,<br />
he practiced law, mostly criminal defense,<br />
in Austin for sixteen years. He was a<br />
friend, and for two years, 1983-85, an<br />
associate of this writer. He will be missed.<br />
LEGISLATIVE: It's not too soon to<br />
start planning <strong>TCDLA</strong>'s legislative agenda<br />
for the 1988 legislative session. Gerry<br />

Robert S. "Bob" Bennett of the<br />
Houston firm of Bennett & Broocks has<br />
recently been appointed to the American<br />
Bar Association's Grand Jury Committee.<br />
Mr. Bennett is a former Assistant United<br />
States Attorney and has published articles<br />
on federal evidence and white-collar<br />
crime.<br />
Mr. Bennett has a special interest in the<br />
operation of federal grand juries, document<br />
production, and Fifth Amendment protection.<br />
He has represented numerous individuals<br />
and corporations before both<br />
federal and state grand juries.<br />

something unrelated to the practice of law,<br />
but near and dear to his heart, that is, Jack<br />
