“Be the best. It’s the only market that’s not crowded.”
One of the most important things you can do to ensure your child has a bright future is to make sure he or she
goes to school every day. It sounds simple, but it’s true. Of course we all get sick from time to time and this can
be a credible absence. According to a report from the Victorian Auditor General, students who are regularly
absent from school are at the greatest risk of dropping out of school early, and of experiencing long‐term
unemployment.
When students miss school, not only is their academic progress impeded, forcing them to catch up on missed
work (which some never do), they often miss important interactions with their peers which can compound issues
of social isolation and low self‐esteem. It seems to be the trend that the students who can least afford to take
time off school are most likely to be serial absentees.
Absenteeism is a huge problem in Australian schools, with the ‘on average student’ missing between 12—15 days
per school year.
Proudly, at Riverside Christian College we are not following this Australian average. Our students have above
average attendance and parents you should be commended for your dedication.
When students stay home from school they miss important
interactions with their peers which can compound issues of
social isolation and low self‐esteem.
JUNIOR COLLEGE News
It may not be the average hot summer, but head lice are
still thriving!
Head lice are prevalent all year round. Our bodies regulate
our temperature, which is perfect for a head lice
infestation, whether it's 20° or 40° outside.
Together we can reduce the prevalence of head lice in our
schools and communities.
Watching young minds grow is a very rewarding part
of being a teacher. Junior College is an amazing place
to sit back and watch the students interacting,
socialising, building on their knowledge bank.
It’s good to stop and think how wonderfully we have
been created and just say “Thanks” to the Creator!
A recent NitWits survey found that 77% of households had
a case of head lice more than once... and 38% had
experienced head lice more than 5 times! This can only be
one of the most frustrating experiences for parents and
schools alike.
For information on head lice. www.nitwitsnatural.com
We would also like to alert
parents to check for School
Sores. (Impetigo)
This infection requires medical
attention immediately and
must be covered with a
watertight dressing before the
student can return to school.
Year 8 Camp
The Year 8 Camp to the Tallebudgera Active Recreation Centre on the Gold Coast was fantastic …. Photos attached to this
edition of the RAP.
Year 8 Immunisations
Hepatitis B and Chicken Pox vaccinations dates are as follows:
Dose 1 ‐ Monday 12 March Dose 2 – Monday 4 June Dose 3 – Monday 29 Oct
Permission forms have been sent home with all Year 8 students and need to be signed and returned to school as soon as
possible (even if you do not wish your child to be immunised).
Uniform Reminders
The College expects that all students are now complying with the Uniform Policy. (Please refer to specific outline in student
diary). All students are expected to wear the correct uniform to school on appropriate days (sports uniform only on sports/
PE days), with correct black leather joggers/school shoes and a neat & tidy haircut. Uniform infringements will be issued to
students who do not comply with our Uniform Policy, and sent home in the diary to enable parents to be aware of areas
that need correction. We would appreciate parent support by acting on these requests as soon as possible.
Please note that Skate Shoes are not appropriate school footwear. Their flat soles and loose shoe‐lacing are not considered
safe for some school activities.
Powerhouse
If any parents/carers are still having difficulty accessing the College Powerhouse site, please let your child’s Form Teacher
know as soon as possible. A pamphlet is available as a self help guide from reception.
Head Lice
We have had several reported cases of head lice in the Middle College. We are asking parents to check children’s hair
thoroughly and, if any lice are found, please treat them according to chemist instructions.
Student Leadership Course
For the next two Tuesdays, the Middle College class leaders will be taking part in a peer skills leadership course, run at the
College by Emily Baumann, our Youth Support Coordinator. This course is designed to enhance leadership skills and peer
relations, giving our students confidence to be great leaders.
In Year 6/7 classrooms…….
English lessons are fabulous and we have been exploring short stories. We have been investigating
things such as an author’s purpose and style, story setting, characters, plot, conflict and resolution.
We are continuing our study this week and are going to look at comparing two short stories.
In Math we have been revising the basics of multiplication and division, as well as studying integers
and number concepts such as multiples and factors.
In SOSE we have been studying Natural Disasters – we have covered volcanoes, cyclones and
tsunamis with many more disasters yet to be explored! When it comes to Science, students have
been studying safety in science, how to carry out experiments, risk assessments and scientific
reports. 6/7H had fun this week during Drama class with a box of props. They learned about
"object transformation"
(eg using a hairbrush as a phone), did an activity handling the props with "someone else's hands", and then performed
short impromptu skits using the props. If your child is in this class, why not ask them about it?
In one of the science labs a snake called Cleo is living happily in her tank. Each term, one lucky class will be
chosen to take care of this amazing reptile. The selected class will feed, fill up her water and clean her tank:
which involves cleaning up her poop (with thick gloves on), and making sure the surroundings are similar to her
natural habitat. For this term the selected class to take care of Cleo is 6/7H. Throughout Term 1, 6/7H will have
the opportunity to discover the many unique features of the Murray Darling Python, such as the week watching
her shed her skin. By Daniel Hoodcamp
Visiting Judge!
Last week, Judge Greg Koppenol
Bachelor of Laws (Hons) visited our newest
subject choice for Senior Students:
Legal Studies!
He was kind enough to devote his
lunch‐break to explaining various aspects
of the Legal System to students in Years 11
and 12. Judge Koppenol spoke with the
students about university courses, legal careers and he
outlined a number of famous cases that he had been
involved with. For example, he represented Queensland’s
interests in the groundbreaking Mabo case and pursues
justice before the High Court of Australia.
The students were inspired by his dedication to tough
sentences for offenders who violate other people’s
rights. We were all very honoured by his willingness to
help us with our understanding of Australian Law in
between sessions at the Maryborough Court House.
Judge Koppenol also raised a few eyebrows when he
spoke of the implications regarding Facebook posts, as
they are submissible in a court of law, as are text
messages, thus reminding us all to consider what we say
in cyber‐space.
Judge Koppenol was very impressed by the College and
the students he met and will return to the College when
his schedule permits.
Interschool Chess Competition
Conner Duggan came in the top 5 recently. Last year
in Year 9 Conner finished ranked 532 in QLD out of
approximately 2500 high school players. Andrew
Fitzpatrick from Gardiner Chess, the tournaments
host commented, “Today has a much larger turnout
than last year’s tournaments with 72 players from 8
schools competing in the event. The schools came
from Hervey Bay, Maryborough and Gympie.” He
further commented “He watched some excellent
games today and the standard of play was very high.”
The competition is held each Term with the Term 3
winner competing in the QLD state finals in Brisbane.
It is open to primary and secondary students with
both competing together to learn and have fun.
Conner is looking forward to working with students
from Riverside to form the Riverside Rooks and take
on the schools from the district as a team rather
than individually. If you would like to learn and
compete in chess contact Conner and/or Mr Harvey.
Experience in playing chess is not essential, one
player in the tournament was instructed how to
play chess the night before the tournament, and
she managed to win 2 of her 7 games.
for the student. Our team of staff and students will seek to build on relationships
already formed in the community and organisations of Normanton.
At this stage the trip will run from 18 ‐ 29 June, depending on flights and costs.
Trip costs will be
$1,500 ‐$2,000 per
This was a fantastic opportunity to meet
professional athletes and ask them questions about
life as a professional sports star and get some
autographs!
Sports Report—Mr Jason Cudby
It has been a busy start to the year in terms of
sport!
Last week we had the Fraser District Summer Sport
Trials. Aidan Ford made the Open Boys Touch
Football side and Philip Bell made the Under 15
Cricket side so congratulations to both of these boys
and we look forward to hearing your results at the
Wide Bay Trials.
The Fraser District Swimming Trials were on
Monday night and we had four of our students
competing at the event, they are Callum Parrotta‐
O’Sullivan, Jordan‐le O’Sullivan, Phillipa Allanson
and Callum McIntosh.
The Fraser District Winter Trials are only a few
weeks away so I am sure we will have more names
to mention regarding those selected for higher
honours.
The amount of effort and enthusiasm shown at the
Swimming Carnival was fantastic so well done to
everyone for a fantastic event.
The next big Sports Carnival is the College Cross
Country and we are looking forward to what should
be another fun filled day!
STAFF News
This week Mrs Harvey, Mrs Slater and myself had the privilege of taking 72 eager Year 8’s on camp.
We spent the first part of our trip at Tallebudgera surfing, body boarding, raft building as well as
some challenging team work activities designed to strengthen relationships and problem solving skills.
Even more challenging for the teachers was remembering how to get down from the top bunk – Mrs
Harvey! The last day of our trip was at Dreamworld wandering around and listening to the screams of
joy as our kids rode the scariest of rides.
This has been an amazing experience for the Year 8 students as well as the teachers and volunteers.
We have had as much fun as the students as we shared the moments of success when a child stood
for the first time on a surf board, body boarded all the way to shore, built a raft that floated, used a
compass, found a crab on the beach, worked together as a team to solve a tricky problem and even
the bruised hand from cheering and clapping on trivia night. Be very proud of our Year 8’s as they
were congratulated on several occasions by the staff at Tallebudgera for their excellent conduct.
An enormous Thank You must go to Mrs Harvey, Mrs Slater, Mr White, Mr Nehow, Mr Kielly and Mrs
Gibson for giving up so much personal time to attend our camp. Without you it would not have been
possible. A big Thank You must also go to the Year 8 parents for not only getting your child ready for
camp but also allowing us to spend this time getting to know your children – we will treasure it
always.
An enormous thank you to our Year 8’s – you were fantastic!!
Mrs Tonya Holder
The students, teachers and parents would also like to say a GIGANTIC thank you
to Mrs Holder, who did so much to organise this amazing camp.
Thank you Mrs Holder for your patience, endurance on the body boards and
amazing sense of fun. Camp would not have been the same without you!
(From Mrs. Harvey, colleagues and students).
Zumba classes run by
our very own Kirstene
staff who are
encouraged to join in
to sell 55 million Macs; it took us
about five years to sell 22 million
iPods, it took us three years to sell
that many iPhones. It’s on a
trajectory that’s off the charts!!!
RIVERSIDE’S ‐ P & F ASSOCIATION
“Empowering OUR College Community Through Authentic Partnerships”
Update from Riverside Parents and Friends Committee:
Notice from the President
Hi everyone and welcome to 2012. This year, the committee is hoping to expand on some of the ideas from last year as
well as implementing new activities for the College community. As a committee, we would love to hear any ideas or
suggestions you may have on how you would like to see the P & F helping our College. Please come along to our next
meeting, details are below.
Canteen
All families should have received the new menu and procedure for the canteen operation. Canteen will be available
every Friday during Term 1. First break will be the main meal and when orders will be supplied. Orders will need to be
placed on the Wednesday prior (before first break). Please place orders in a paper bag, large enough to accommodate
the meal ordered or 10c will be charged for a bag. If your child has an allergy ‐‐ please advise on the paper bag with
every order. The canteen will be open in second break for sweets, treats and drinks. See page 14 for menu details.
Wherever possible, there will be no egg, nuts or seafood in any products.
If you are able to help in the Canteen on Friday, please contact the Canteen Co‐ordinator ‐
Tanya Boyce ‐ on 0478 124 224.
School Banking
School banking is growing in leaps and bounds with new bankers starting every week. Remember that accounts can now
be opened at the branch with a commission of $5 being paid to the College the first time the student banks.
If you have any question please email Cass on cponthego@gmail.com.
Deposit books are collected in class every Thursday and returned by the following Monday.
Next Meeting
The next meeting will be held on Monday 12 March at 7.00 pm in the Prep Room at Riverside. Where possible, meetings
will be held on the second Monday of each month.
Don't put yourself or child at risk by not keeping packed lunches cool!
The Australian Food Safety Information Council has released a national survey that shows on warm days 8% of
workers who take a packed lunch make no attempt to keep their packed lunches cool. Of even more concern,
20% of those with children who take a packed lunch to school don’t provide their children with a frozen drink or
ice brick to help keep their packed lunch cool. You can reduce your risk of food poisoning by simply packing a
frozen juice box, water bottle or commercial ice pack with the lunch. Place perishable foods such as cheeses and
sandwiches between the frozen items. Leave food refrigerated until just before you leave home.
Children’s lunchboxes kept inside the school bag will keep cooler longer especially if the bag is kept away from
heat sources such as direct sunlight. There is no need to refrigerate school lunches if they are stored with a
frozen drink.
COLLEGE BUSES ARE FULL
Sorry to advise that all College Buses are full at this time.
If you wish to book on a bus, please complete a blue
booking form. Your child’s name will then be placed on a
waiting list until a seat is available. We cannot put
children on buses just for on off trips. Parents will need to
arrange with family or friends to assist them.
Competition. This debate is being hosted by the
Xavier Catholic College on Wednesday
COLLEGE NOTICES
E‐ZONE—new equipment—new challenges
In E‐Zone students enjoy new games that were purchased
last year.
With the large increase in
Riverside families this year the
car parks have been very busy!
We greatly appreciate the
patience and common courtesy
that parents are showing when
they drop off and pick up their
children.
For those new families that are
unsure, we would ask,
particularly when picking up,
that cars be parked ONLY in
designated carpark spaces.
Not only is this for the safety of
our students but it also makes
for quick and smooth flow of
traffic.
Thank you all for your support.
Koorong Kids Catalogues
have been distributed this
week to students. If you
missed out please come to
Student Reception for
your copy. Order forms
and money must be in by
Friday 9 March, 2012.
2012 is the National Year of Reading
Nearly half the population struggles without the literacy skills to
meet the most basic demands of everyday life and work. There
are 46% of Australians who can't read newspapers; follow a
recipe; make sense of timetables, or understand the
instructions on a medicine bottle.
Australian libraries and Riverside Christian College is behind a
campaign to turn 2012 into the National Year of Reading, linking
together all the great things that are already happening around
books, reading and literacy, and giving them an extra boost.
To participate in this great campaign we are wanting students
to participate in a competition called 'Get Caught Reading!'
Please send in your pictures of Readers caught reading! to
debbie.deans@riverside.qld.edu.au. and I will display your
pictures around the College.
This is how easy it is to do: Chelsea Jamieson‐Bews in Year 7
emailed me this great picture of her caught reading with her
lovely pets. Mrs Debbie Deans
Garage Sale Items ... Start Collecting Now!
Each year the College hosts a garage sale to raise funds for
various missions. Parents are encouraged to bring in unwanted
saleable items that they wish to donate towards this cause.
Further information will be provided in the near future for drop
off areas etc.
