It was involved in an attack by 50 British ships and a simultaneous assault on land by<br />
forces under the command of GeneralHenry Clinton. The British were defeated and in the<br />
engagement they lost 3 ships, the 'Sphynx', the 'Actegon' & the 'Syren'.They had run<br />

afoul of each other & grounded helplessly in the mud of Midland Shoal. Sir Henry Clinton<br />
baffled in his attempts to assail the Revolutionary patriots by land & sea, mounted what was<br />
supposed to be the highest hill on Long Island to spy. This hill is still there and bears his<br />
name. In 1897, a Dr Lawrence bought the property on which the hill is located.<br />
