On-line survey of young black men<br />

Survey method<br />

BTEG carried out a survey to collect information from young black men in London about their experiences of<br />

employment, unemployment and looking for work. The survey was open for responses from early November 2013<br />

to end of January 2014.<br />

The target group of survey respondents was black men (African, Caribbean, Mixed) aged between 16 and 24, living<br />

in London. Because there is no sampling frame for this population, the survey used a network sampling approach.<br />

BTEG asked organisations working with young black men in London to pass on a web-link to the survey and encourage<br />

young black men to complete the survey questionnaire.<br />

The survey was available for completion on-line. A printed version of the on-line survey was available for completion<br />

by respondents without on-line access; this version was used in one Job Centre and in two prisons.<br />

Sampling approach<br />

The survey used a network sampling as it was not possible to conduct random sampling for the target population<br />

of young black men in London. Because of the sampling approach used, the survey findings cannot be considered<br />

representative of all young black men in London. However, the profile of survey respondents in terms of qualifications<br />

and employment status is not dissimilar from the profile for all young black men in London.<br />

The survey questionnaire was completed by 160 young black men.<br />

l 83% of respondents are aged 16-24<br />

l 15% are 25 or over<br />

l 2% are under 16<br />

Ethnic group<br />

l 110 respondents gave information about their ethnic group. Of these, 48% are Black Caribbean, 42% are<br />

Black African and 9% are of Mixed ethnic origin.<br />

Living in London<br />

l 97% of respondents live in London<br />

Employment status<br />

l 72% of respondents are in education, employment or training (EET)<br />

l 28% of respondents are not in education, employment or training (NEET)<br />
