TESTING, RESEARCH AND STANDARDISATION FACILITIES 

Directorate of Marketing and Inspection has set up a net work of 11 Regional 

Agmark Laboratories at different places in the country with Central Agmark Laboratory, 

Nagpur as the apex laboratory for quality certification of agricultural produce. In all, 145 

technical persons are working in these laboratories. These laboratories have been 

established to formulate standards and conduct physical and chemical analysis of 

agricultural and allied commodities in accordance with APGM Act 1937. 

Central Agmark Laboratory has following specialized divisions for carrying out 

research and standardization work. 

A. Chemical Division 

1) Oils & Fats Section 

2) Spices, Condiments and other Commodities Section 

3) Toxicology Section 

4) Instruments Section 

B. Microbiology Division 

The main functions of Central Agmark Laboratory are: 

a) To evolve/standardize methods of analysis/tests of agricultural and allied 

commodities. 

b) To advise on technical matters to the Regional Agmark Laboratories and 

various quality control agencies and State Government Grading Laboratories, 

in relation to grading of various agricultural commodities and allied products 

under Agmark. 

c) Formulation of specifications for new commodities for bringing them under the 

purview of Agmark. 

d) Revision of specifications of various agricultural & allied products 

periodically. 

e) To function as an apex laboratory. 

f) Imparting training to the personnel engaged in the analysis of various 

commodities under Agmark. 

g) To create awareness with regard to grading, standardization and quality of 

various agricultural and food products. 

h) Carrying out Extension & Publicity/Consumer Awareness Program 

The Regional Agmark Laboratories are engaged in analysis of agricultural and food 

commodities for evaluating the quality of the product. The main activities of Regional 

Agmark Laboratories are as follows:

a) Analysis of agricultural commodities covered under Agmark, 

b) Technical advice to approved grading laboratories 

c) Training of Grading chemists of the private approved lab., State Grading Lab 

and other similar organization. 

d) Associate with Central Agmark Laboratory, in collaborative 

studies/research/standardization work of various agricultural and allied 

commodities. 

e) To organize Awareness programmes in grading, standardisation and quality 

control.

Accreditation of Laboratories 

Central Agmark Laboratory, Nagpur along with Regional Agmark Laboratories 

Chennai & Mumbai have been accredited as per ISO/IEC 17025:2005 by National 

Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) in the field of 

analytical testing of Vegetable oils. 

In addition, 5 RALs are under process of getting accredited as per ISO/IEC 

17025:2005 in the year 2013-14 in the field of analytical testing for Ground Spices, 

Ghee, Butter, Fatspread, Honey, Atta, Maida, Suji & Besan. 

The remaining RALs will also be taken up for accreditation in a phased manner. 

In the final phase, all the laboratories will be accredited for testing of remaining 

agricultural commodities as encompassed under Agmark.

VISION 

a) To organize training and awareness programme on Good Laboratory Practices, 

Grading, Standardization and quality certification for the benefit of farmers. 

b) To organize training in chemical analysis, microbiological analysis and food safety 

parameters. 

c) Framing of specification for Research and Standardization work of agricultural, food 

and allied commodities. 

d) Development of methods of analysis 

e) Collection of data on quality parameters for harmonization of standards 

for international acceptance. 

f) To accord recognition to laboratories engaged in analytical work under “Agmark” by 

adopting Good Laboratory Practices. 

g) Preparation of manual on Grading, Standardisation and quality certification, Good 

Laboratory Practices, analysis of agricultural produce at farmer’s level. 

h) Accreditation of all laboratories as per ISO/IEC/17025:2005 for specified commodities 

such as ghee, butter, vegetable oils, whole & ground spices, honey, besan, wheat 

atta etc,
