TESTING, RESEARCH AND STANDARDISATION FACILITIES<br />
Directorate of Marketing <strong>and</strong> Inspection has set up a net work of 11 Regional<br />
Agmark Laboratories at different places in the country with Central Agmark Laboratory,<br />
Nagpur as the apex laboratory for quality certification of agricultural produce. In all, 145<br />
technical persons are working in these laboratories. These laboratories have been<br />
established to formulate st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>and</strong> conduct physical <strong>and</strong> chemical analysis of<br />
agricultural <strong>and</strong> allied commodities in accordance with APGM Act 1937.<br />
Central Agmark Laboratory has following specialized divisions for carrying out<br />
<strong>research</strong> <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ardization work.<br />
A. Chemical Division<br />
1) Oils & Fats Section<br />
2) Spices, Condiments <strong>and</strong> other Commodities Section<br />
3) Toxicology Section<br />
4) Instruments Section<br />
B. Microbiology Division<br />
The main functions of Central Agmark Laboratory are:<br />
a) To evolve/st<strong>and</strong>ardize methods of analysis/tests of agricultural <strong>and</strong> allied<br />
commodities.<br />
b) To advise on technical matters to the Regional Agmark Laboratories <strong>and</strong><br />
various quality control agencies <strong>and</strong> State Government Grading Laboratories,<br />
in relation to grading of various agricultural commodities <strong>and</strong> allied products<br />
under Agmark.<br />
c) Formulation of specifications for new commodities for bringing them under the<br />
purview of Agmark.<br />
d) Revision of specifications of various agricultural & allied products<br />
periodically.<br />
e) To function as an apex laboratory.<br />
f) Imparting training to the personnel engaged in the analysis of various<br />
commodities under Agmark.<br />
g) To create awareness with regard to grading, st<strong>and</strong>ardization <strong>and</strong> quality of<br />
various agricultural <strong>and</strong> food products.<br />
h) Carrying out Extension & Publicity/Consumer Awareness Program<br />
The Regional Agmark Laboratories are engaged in analysis of agricultural <strong>and</strong> food<br />
commodities for evaluating the quality of the product. The main activities of Regional<br />
Agmark Laboratories are as follows:
a) Analysis of agricultural commodities covered under Agmark,<br />
b) Technical advice to approved grading laboratories<br />
c) Training of Grading chemists of the private approved lab., State Grading Lab<br />
<strong>and</strong> other similar organization.<br />
d) Associate with Central Agmark Laboratory, in collaborative<br />
studies/<strong>research</strong>/st<strong>and</strong>ardization work of various agricultural <strong>and</strong> allied<br />
commodities.<br />
e) To organize Awareness programmes in grading, st<strong>and</strong>ardisation <strong>and</strong> quality<br />
control.<br />

Accreditation of Laboratories<br />
Central Agmark Laboratory, Nagpur along with Regional Agmark Laboratories<br />
Chennai & Mumbai have been accredited as per ISO/IEC 17025:2005 by National<br />
Accreditation Board for Testing <strong>and</strong> Calibration Laboratories (NABL) in the field of<br />
analytical <strong>testing</strong> of Vegetable oils.<br />
In addition, 5 RALs are under process of getting accredited as per ISO/IEC<br />
17025:2005 in the year 2013-14 in the field of analytical <strong>testing</strong> for Ground Spices,<br />
Ghee, Butter, Fatspread, Honey, Atta, Maida, Suji & Besan.<br />
The remaining RALs will also be taken up for accreditation in a phased manner.<br />
In the final phase, all the laboratories will be accredited for <strong>testing</strong> of remaining<br />
agricultural commodities as encompassed under Agmark.
VISION<br />
a) To organize training <strong>and</strong> awareness programme on Good Laboratory Practices,<br />
Grading, St<strong>and</strong>ardization <strong>and</strong> quality certification for the benefit of farmers.<br />
b) To organize training in chemical analysis, microbiological analysis <strong>and</strong> food safety<br />
parameters.<br />
c) Framing of specification for Research <strong>and</strong> St<strong>and</strong>ardization work of agricultural, food<br />
<strong>and</strong> allied commodities.<br />
d) Development of methods of analysis<br />
e) Collection of data on quality parameters for harmonization of st<strong>and</strong>ards<br />
for international acceptance.<br />
f) To accord recognition to laboratories engaged in analytical work under “Agmark” by<br />
adopting Good Laboratory Practices.<br />
g) Preparation of manual on Grading, St<strong>and</strong>ardisation <strong>and</strong> quality certification, Good<br />
Laboratory Practices, analysis of agricultural produce at farmer’s level.<br />
h) Accreditation of all laboratories as per ISO/IEC/17025:2005 for specified commodities<br />
such as ghee, butter, vegetable oils, whole & ground spices, honey, besan, wheat<br />
atta etc,
