CARNEY ST HWY 97 Cranbrook Hill Greenway TRAIL RATING Packed Earth ADDITIONAL INFO Scenic Wildlife How to get there The north end of the trail can be accessed from the Otway Ski Center located on Otway Road. The south end of the trail can be accessed the southwest corner of the UNBC parking lot that has been designated for greenway users. Also, the trail can be accessed from the southeast corner of Forests for The World. Lastly, the greenway’s southern access point can be accessed from Kimball Road located off of Highway 16 West by Art Knapp’s. Distance: 25 km Elevation Change: 245 metres Take a tour on the Cranbrook Hill Greenway and enjoy the varied landscape and natural beauty of Cranbrook Hill. Within the Greenway is 25 km of multi use trail that connects the Otway Ski Center to Forests for the World (FFTW) to UNBC to Parkridge Creek at Highway 16 West. For more information on this trail visit http://greenway.gis.unbc.ca UNBC to FFTW (0.8 km) Travel on a trail surrounded by a mixed-wood forest with large birch trees to the greenway trail head sign at the southeast corner of Forests for the World. Otway Ski Centre NORTH NECHAKO RD OTWAY RD NORTHWOOD PULP RD UNBC to Blue Spruce (6 km) An open canopied forest with large birch trees and lush understory is encountered initially. At the UNBC/Blue Spruce/Otway junction, one must travel south to reach Blue Spruce. The forest is dense and is comprised of large Interior Douglas-fi r trees with evidence of past logging activity. 2ND AVE 3RD AVE UNBC to the Otway Ski Center (18 km) At the UNBC/Blue Spruce/Otway junction, one can travel northwest to Otway. After a mild ascent, the trail reaches a high point with panoramic views of mountains. The trail then descends to a beaver marsh and small lake, and eventually passes old mine diggings nestled in a rock outcrop. The old Sawdust Pile road is eventually crossed, and the headwaters of the major drainage of the greenway is reached, at which point the trail follows the drainage for 4 km. The trail alternates between open, south facing slopes with colorful meadows, and forested north facing slopes. As one leaves the drainage, the trail enters a private woodlot with a which shows the impacts of the mountain pine beetle. The trail eventually crosses Takla Road and continues on to a brook crossing which indicates the northern border of a woodlot where one emerges from forest and parallels a regenerating forest on private property. Once again, the greenway enters a denser forested area of Interior Douglas-fi r and spruce, with birch groves. With a slight fall in altitude, the greenway enters the Otway ski trails. The trail descends beside a small creek until it reaches the biathlon area. The final 1.5 km of the trail meanders through a lodgepole pine forest until it reaches the parking area at the Otway Ski Center. UNBC Connector Trail System TRAIL RATING ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Foothills, University Way, Tyner & Ospika Loop TRAIL RATING ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Paved or Asphalt Gravel Packed Earth Scenic Wildlife Transit Distance: 9 km Elevation Change: Up to 120 metres Amenities: Information kiosks, viewpoints, off leash area in Ginters Meadow The UNBC Connector Trail System includes over 10 km of trails that connect the community to the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC), Cranbrook Hill Greenway and Forests for the World. The trails provide opportunity for walks through both forest and meadow. 18TH AVE QUINN ST 22ND AVE MASSEY DR CENTRAL ST OSPIKA BLVD TYNER BLVD GRIFFITHS AVE C A RN E Y ST HWY 97 WESTWOOD DR FERRY AVE 17TH AVE For a shorter walk with relatively fl at terrain, you can access the trail at the west end of either Ferry Avenue or Massey Drive or from the north end of the trail at the corner of 18th Avenue and Foothills. A more ambitious walk through a forested trail will lead you to University Way with a 120 metre elevation change. From here, you can continue along University Way to Tyner Boulevard or onto UNBC campus to link to the Cranbrook Hill Greenway Trail or Forests for the World trails. University Way is a popular hill for walkers during all seasons. Tyner Boulevard and Ospika Boulevard also provide great hills for climbing and enjoying the city viewscapes. These hills have elevation changes ranging from 90 to 150 metres. The trail along Tyner Boulevard is crushed gravel, as are the trails along the lower section of the UNBC Connector Trail.
