<strong>in</strong>stallation works f<strong>in</strong>ished <strong>in</strong> autumn 2005<br />

• Official open<strong>in</strong>g 10.03.2006, adjustments up to<br />

autumn 2006<br />

• Biogas production technology from Belgium -<br />

OÜ Saare Economics Jööri <strong>biogas</strong> project<br />

• Manure is collected from 8 pig farms with 27 000<br />

pigs – 40 000 t/a<br />

• Sludge from Kuressaare sewage water treatment<br />

plant – 3 000 t/a<br />

• Biogas production – 2.4 mio m 3 /a<br />

• Capacity <strong>of</strong> CHP unit – 350 kW el <strong>and</strong> 350 kW th<br />

• Estimated energy production –<br />

– 2 200 MWh el /a, 25% should be sold to grid, 75% is own<br />

dem<strong>and</strong><br />

– 3 500 MWh th – will be used for heat<strong>in</strong>g the digester <strong>and</strong><br />

for space heat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

• Water from digestion residue is removed us<strong>in</strong>g<br />

centrifuge. Both solid <strong>and</strong> liquid parts after<br />

centrifug<strong>in</strong>g will be used as fertilizer, solid part<br />

might be sold

Other <strong>biogas</strong> projects<br />

• In Tall<strong>in</strong>n Sewage Water Treatment Plant<br />

the yearly sewage gas production is<br />

2.8 Mm 3 /y <strong>and</strong> it energy content <strong>in</strong> <strong>biogas</strong><br />

exceeds 13 GWh/y<br />

• In Narva Sewage Water Treatment Plant<br />

<strong>biogas</strong> project should start <strong>in</strong> 2008 - 2009


Tall<strong>in</strong>n Pääsküla l<strong>and</strong>fill<br />

• Tall<strong>in</strong>n - population about 400,000 <strong>in</strong>habitants<br />

• Annually 200 - 220 thous<strong>and</strong> tons <strong>of</strong> organic waste<br />

has been generated <strong>and</strong> stored <strong>in</strong> the Pääsküla<br />

l<strong>and</strong>fill<br />

• The Pääsküla l<strong>and</strong>fill was <strong>in</strong> operation from 1962 until<br />

2003<br />

• L<strong>and</strong>fills area occurs about 25 ha with the average<br />

height <strong>of</strong> garbage layer up to 40 meters<br />

• In 1994 A new company Terts Ltd was founded <strong>and</strong> it<br />

started to carry out a <strong>biogas</strong>-produc<strong>in</strong>g project at<br />

Pääsküla<br />

• In 1994 3000 meters <strong>of</strong> gas filters <strong>and</strong> 1000 meters <strong>of</strong><br />

connections pipes was <strong>in</strong>stalled. Today these<br />

numbers are 10000 m <strong>and</strong> 5000 m


L<strong>and</strong>fill gas <strong>utilization</strong> phases<br />

• L<strong>and</strong>fill gas collection began <strong>in</strong> 1994 (commission<strong>in</strong>g date Dec.<br />

1994)<br />

– Estimated <strong>biogas</strong> production 1000 nm 3 /h with CH 4 content<br />

50%<br />

– Gas was used for heat<strong>in</strong>g about 1000 apartments<br />

• First cogeneration heat <strong>and</strong> power station (CHP), owned by<br />

Terts Ltd, was commissioned on December, 2001.<br />

• Second CHP, owned by Terts Ltd, was commissioned on<br />

November, 2004<br />

• Installed ord<strong>in</strong>ary Otto gas eng<strong>in</strong>es made by company<br />

Jenbacher (Austria)<br />

• Electrical output <strong>of</strong> both CHP units - 836 kW <strong>and</strong> thermal output<br />

- 1050 kW<br />

• Today the waste disposal to Pääsküla l<strong>and</strong>fill has f<strong>in</strong>ished <strong>and</strong><br />

Future plans<br />

• Jõelähtme parish (located nearby Tall<strong>in</strong>n)<br />

– In 2003 270,460 t <strong>of</strong> organic waste has been<br />

collected. From total amount <strong>of</strong> organic waste<br />

76.7% might be used for <strong>biogas</strong> production, i.e<br />

207,418 t/a<br />

– Manure from local cattle <strong>and</strong> big farms should<br />

be collected from the distance up to 40 km<br />

• From the year 2007 few farms have been<br />

carried out feasibility studies on manure-toenergy<br />

projects
